yep....it was a weird situation though, as he really wasnt the linear champ...
b-hop's ring lhw title comes from the jones line, so if the thread starter is not counting jones' ring lhw title, he shouldnt count bernards.....
Linear? That died when Spinks moved to heavyweight. There was NO linear champ at 175. LOL@ Michalchewski trying to lay claim to the title.
But against who though..?
If David Haye was around back then, I would say moving up to Cruiserweight and beating him would mean far more than beating Ruiz.
I PICKED ROY JONES, BTW...
It's still a very good accomplishment, even though Ruiz is probably one of the worst heavyweight title holders in history.
Roy Jones. The first fighter in over a hundred years to win a middleweight title, move up to win a heavyweight title and move back down to light heavyweight to win a title.

hopkins
roy legacy is a shameful one due to his use of steroids
Coming from the guy who has someone in his avatar that KILLED his family BECAUSE of steroids
your the biggest clown on this forum
Bernard ruled his division long enough to be a p4p elite fighter but Jones was the man. And yeah it was just Ruiz' sorry ass but Roy did step up and win a HW belt too.

I think the wins and the names on the resume favors Hopkins but the fact that Jones beat him makes it very close. I would still take hopkins though, as he also beat the two guys who destroyed Roy and was never beat in a fashion as devastating as Roy was. I've never been a big believer of Roy's resume though, I think he should have done much much more with his talent.
In terms of natural ability Roy is light years ahead. In terms of how they have nutured the talent they were given, Bernard has squeezed every drop out, love him or hate him he has made the most of what he was given.
Legacy wise, Roy takes it, too much weight is given to smaller guys on Hopkins resume (DLH, Trinidad), also although Bernard is an ambassador for clean living, he undoes a lot of that good work in the way he behaves in the ring IMHO
Notable wins
Hopkins
Winky Wright
Antonio Tarver
Oscar De La Hoya
Felix Trinidad
Antwun Echols
Glen Johnson
Jones
Felix Trinidad
Antonio Tarver (W I know you didnt forget that Jones won the first fight.)
John Ruiz (Heavyweight title)
Clinton Woods (The only reason Woods is here is because since Jones stopped him, Woods went on to beat Johnson)
Montell Griffin
James Toney
Bernard Hopkins
the hell, why does everyone forget the Virgil Hill win? the guy had so many title fights, its crazy. and hes in his mid 40s and still challenging for titles today.
The Julio Cesar Gonzalez and Eric Harding wins are also good, Gonzalez went on to beat Michalsylwastiga and Harding was coming off a win over Tarver.
Reggie Johnson is also a damn good win, he was a light heavy champ before he lost to Jones and went on to have a real close fight with Tarver, where he was able to drop him.
McCallum, Lucas, Otis Grant, and Jorge Fernando Castro are also not bad wins at all. McCallum was pretty old by that time though, so dont give him credit for a win over a prime McCallum.
but really, Jones is known for how bad he beat his opponents, not really his level of opposition. if you watch his fights, most the time he looks like hes just dickin around in there.
his losses came at the age of 35, after he had put his body under a ton of stress moving up and down in weight.
Fighters who rely heavily on handspeed and reflexes rarely ever last into their mid-30's.
Look at what Ali and Leonard looked like at the age of 35.
Roy Jones beat
18 current or former champions
7-multi division champions
several hall-of-fame fighters
won titles in 4 divisions
3 time LT Heavy champion
was essentially undefeated in 50 fights (1 loss by DQ...avenged by first round KO, but none of his wins were ever close and/or controversial)
didn't lose until he was well into his decline
and holds a clear win over Hopkins
Dariusz was just another Ottke. He had some skills but never did anything worth being remembered outside of being used as fodder to insult RJJ by haters.
Exactly, However you cant deny how dominate he was on that side of the atlantic up until he fought Julio, a Guy Roy beat the fuck up.
Anyhow the hard thing for me was that I didnt accept Roy until late in his career, it was hard to similar to Floyd, in my eyes I didnt feel he was fighting the best, how could anybody be so good? it wasnt until he fought Ruiz that we saw his very best.
but even then I questioned weather or not he fought the best Lt Heavys out there, Ruiz was limited Jones style didnt mesh with Ruiz which is why we had that kind of out come.
However when he moved back down to lt Heavy we saw Roy look old some would say, but I really think if Floyd wants to be considered the best not by the experts not by just his fans but by everybody he must take these fights period.
When you ask people who is the greatest of all time who do they say? Ali you know why becuase Ali did fight them all.
When you ask people who is the best welter weight they dont know, fight fans know experts know but people in general they dont know, and wont know until Floyd shows them. its up to Floyd really.
anyhow back on to Jones, I think Jones is the better of the two honestly and it seems to me like you also agree to this its close but I also think if Tito and Oscar were true middles it would look alot better for Nard.
