Unlike some people Calzaghe doesn't call himself a legend. I think the 'legend killer' was a pretty obvious dig at Hopkins and his delusions of grandeur.
Reid, Kessler, Lacy for prime fighters are pretty good wins. Eubank and Hopkins were very good wins despite the fact that they were past their prime. Calzaghe has had a few other decent wins as well, so although his record is overrated sometimes he did not just fight bums for most of his career. This, and his other accomplishments make him a great fighter, and a legend for the people that have been following him for years. Perhaps not to the ones that thought he would get destroyed by Lacy 2 years ago.
haha did Robin Reid and Eubank just get called bums??
its funny how lacy wasnt a bum until he got beaten.
neither reid or eubank was perticularly amazin fighters/amazin career wise, great fighters no doubt...but still far from legends (as zaghe is)
lacy was overrated to begin wit.
technicly speakin, eubanks filed for bankrupcy, so he really is a bum lmfao
Joe has some questionable wins as well (OK, just two). Some might call his win this weekend questionable (although, IMHO, it was a clear victory for Joe) and the Robin Reid fight was a close one that some might see as going the other way.
Still, I think Ottke was a very good boxer who knew how to use the ring effectively. His wins over Mundine and Johnson, not to mention eeking out a win over Byron Mitchell, give him credibility in my book.
Wasn't Mundane 5-0 at the time? The Mitchell decision was wrong IMO but it was certainly less wrong than a couple of others (Brewer, Reid and, although I didn't see it but enough people I know did, Larsen to name but 3)
As for Calzaghe-Reid .... close but I scored it decisively to Calzaghe, as did the two non-English judges by wide margins funnily enough. Given that he bust his hand in the early rounds and had to fight one-handed, I'd say that ranks as an excellent achievement.
Ottke better than Calzaghe? The world has gone mad. In all fairness he had a few legitimate wins but he lost at least 4 times. That Reid fight will go down as the most corrupt officiating performance ever and rightly so.

beatin jeff lacy, mikkel kessler, 42 bums an a 43 yr old bernard hopkins aperently make u a legend these days...:nonono:
same thing i was thinking, i remember when becoming a legend took more than that.
I dare you to name 3 better SMW champs in history. Just three. I mean, seriously, Roy Jones Jr. only defended his IBF SMW title 5 times since he won it from James Toney, who had only defended it 4 times before losing it to Roy. Meanwhile, Joe has defended his titles 21 times. Nard successfully defended his title 20 times, one less than Joe, and yet he's so great?
Seriously, name three.
Some might say Ottke (and I'd agree), who defended his title 21 times as well, against some better competition, and retired undefeated. But I wouldn't consider Roy, Toney, Benn, McClellan, or Eubank as better than Joe, EVER.
So, if Joe is the second-best SMW in history, how could he not be a legend?

Roy Jones on pure talent. Ottke on the other hand was a decent fighter who was essential to the morale of the disenfranchised and disenchanted old East German population, all of their atheletes had been exposed as drugs cheats and few of their soccer players made it into the unified German Team. So who did they have as a sporting hero?.......OTTKE.. consequently the only way he would be defeated in Germany was by ko, which, thanks to his above average boxing ability he avoided. Undefeated? Due to a host of the most corrupt officials since the Korean antics in Seoul (revenge for the decisions they received at LA 1984).
Ottke lost a minimum of two and arguably up to five matches. Watch the Ottke Reid fight and tell me something wasn't amiss with the ref as well as the judges
Calzaghe you claim to be a Legend killer, but you're not a Legend yourself
I think his record speaks for itself. Just another great boxer to come out of Wales and to date far the best. He will be talked about for years.
