Calzaghe deserves respect now.

I was in the same spot as most people when he fought Manfredo and got the KO. I thought he was overrated and he got lucky against an overrated opponent in Lacy. How wrong was I! He beats one of the best at Supper Middleweight in Kessler and then comes to America, fights, and beats one of the best fighters in boxing, and one of the best fighters America has to offer in Hopkins. He won his first fight at LHW, he won his first fight in America, and he proves that if he keeps going and beats some other big fighters (Pavlik? Taylor? Jones?) then he deserves the title of best SMW of all time and recognition as being possible p4p #1. calzaghe is a pretty good fighter maybe great, but beating a 43 year old Hopkins doesn't make him the great super middleweight of all time nor does it make him p4p #1. I still believe a prime HOpkins beats Calzaghe... a 43 year old Hopkins just doesn't have the stamina to keep up with Calzaghe. The HOpkins that beat Tito would punish Calzaghe.

You can't make everyone happy! I think some people on here have problems being objective. Too many biased posts, and many people are ignorant to calzaghe's career, they go by word of mouth rather than seeing for themselves. I am a calzaghe fan but have no hesitation in saying that hopkins is the better fighter in terms of history and achievement. Shame like hopkins, some of his fans can't give due props. With how long he has been in the business he could have done more with his career but didn't.. He's good but I wouldn't call him great. Anyway, I dont care much for the guy. Don't like or dislike him. Neutral to him really.

Calzaghe is a great fighter, but he is STILL overrated. He got dropped and outboxed by a 43 year old Hopkins. Kessler is overrated, Lacy is, and Manfredo is a nobody. He needs to add some legit names (Tarver, Dawson) to his list, not other past their prime fighters (RJJ). I don't think Tarver is in his prime at all. His stamina is god awful.

Really good to see someone prepared to change their mind when it becomes obvious they should do so. Respect. One thing I find interesting, that illuminates the gulf between the perceptions of different sets of fans, is the way you saw the Manfredo fight. Every UK fan of Joe, or probably *fan* period, knew that that fight was nothing more than a means to get US exposure. Manfredo was probably more well known in the US than Chad Dawson was at that time, having been on the Contender. No-one for a second saw him as a live opponent. But here you are, and you say "most" other fans, by which I presume you mean in the US, describing how you saw Calzaghe as really trying to use Manfredo as a credible victory, and I can totally understand why that should be so. If you're not a Calzaghe fan, with nothing invested in his career, he really is just another foreign fighter trying to make his name, and for you, you just look at who he fights. I think it shows that all of us should be prepared to take the opinions of opposing fans (each other) a bit more seriously. Only by looking at both sides do any of us get the full picture. ________ Creampie Wife
