Why was Hopkins performance a classic piece of old school fighting to some people, & yet John Ruiz standard tactics are a stain on the sport?
To me, there doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot of difference in basic plan - hit & hold, wrestle, hold & hit.
Think that Ruiz tends to actually throw a few more punches, though...
i guess the reality is Ruiz just stays in the pocket more and Hopkins boxes a bit more. They both can be in some very borin fights more so then not.
Hopkins has done it his way, but without Golden Boy Promotions i don't think we'd even hear about Hopkins in this point in his career.
What are or should I say Who are you talkin 'bout? Hopkins made history in the MW division without Golden Boy! Noone from Golden Boy fought his fights, he did!

I have been asking this question for years, but dont expect a legit honest answer from the forums, you see the same shit that I do, the fact is there is no difference in their style both are dirty ugly and boring styles to watch the only real differences there are weight class and race other than that they are basicly the same.

Hopkins uses feints, which were favored by "old-school" tacticians like Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott and Archie Moore. He is the classic counter-puncher, the kind of guy who it's impossible (so-far) to dominate.
If you make Roy Jones look human in 1993 and still have it to make Calzaghe look awkward in 2008, you have my respect.
As for Ruiz, there is very little athletic quality to what he does.
