Omg he lets bhop hold all day long but when it comes to ricky hatton? wtf! how biased is that?
I noticed bhop was gettin dirty shots on all day he headbutted calazaghe when the ref was breaking them up and the ref said fuck all and he was low blowing him and punching him in the hips cortez says nothing.
Then low blows from calazghe rofl wtf? he went down like 2 times for 2 minutes no point deducted? then again but then cortez finally realises hes faking haha.
Then joe is on the ropes basicallly almost out of the ropes because hopkins went behind his back then joe cudnet see him cortez takes 20 seconds to break them up rofl? what would of happened if joe got hurt?
Bhop stepped on his feet to but nothing from cortez fucking bs!!! omg worse refing ever.
I didn't really think Cortez was that bad. His last two notable fights have been some tough ones with physical guys like Hatton and Bernard who like to hold a lot. I was hoping he wouldn't take away points from either fighter and he didn't because both last night were fighting dirty at times. If he would have had fights like Marquez/Vasquez or Pac/Marquez where the ref didn't have to do a whole lot then nobody would be talking bad about him.
-- and don't forget April 19th, T-97. Cortez was a good ref he isn't anymore.
To be honest, i thought he was being a bit gay in the first 3 or 4 rounds but from then on i was happy with him really. :)
Hands down Cortez is the worst referee at this time. He wasn't always this bad so maybe it is age. But I definitely don't want to see him ref another championship bout of this caliber. It almost seems he picks a favorite fighter from the beginning and helps him through out the fight. Maybe he works for the new beast in boxing which is Golden Boy Productions, owner of the Ring magazine and its belts. Even the HBO Telecast was biased until Calzaghe obviously turned the fight all the way around. I'm glad for once a fighter beat the powers that be.
Hopkins must have landed about 30+ low blows in that fight. Just pitter patter ones on the break on the blind side of the referee, terrible I think personally.
Funny about the whole Cortez and Hatton to Cortez and Hopkins comparison. "Fair but Firm", what a load of shit.
agreed he was punching him in the hips to which must of hurt even if it was pitter patter.
Exactly. People can complain about B-Hop leading w/ his head somewhat, but it's not like he was landing butt after butt or throwing it around on the inside to a large degree. He uses it, sure, but not to such a large degree that a point deduction was needed.
So what else are people complaining about... his holding? He wasn't holding on for dear life, wrestling with him, hugging and hitting non-stop... there were clinches. Taking points away for fighters clinching damns a referee and a fight. A fighter has to be grabbing their opponent to truly deserve point deductions for it. Not stepping forward into punches, then when on the inside wrapping up a little.
Would it have been nice to see a little less of it? Sure. But there was nothing wrong w/ how Cortez conducted himself in the fight. Cortez could've blown the fight by taking points away. Instead, he ref'd a good fight and nobody had any deductions.
omg another blind one.
He was leading in wit his head.
Stepping on joes feet.
Headbutted him a few times on the break.
Pitter pattering low blowing on the break.
Went down when there was no low blow twice.

This depends. There are category's in fouls. If a guy lowblows another 5 times, he should get a point deducted. If he elbows twice, and holds the head twice, and lowblows once..you can't really deduct points for one specific thing, IMO.
Wether Calzaghe hit a homerun on his nuts, or gave him a soft pad..he still gave Hops some low blows. They both had their fair share of rough tactics. Just be more open minded.

agreed i dont want to see him ref a big fight again
I can't believe Calzaghe agreed to him after seeing what he did to Hatton. Maybe he had no choice.
The US guys must know the Brits hate Cortez, why re-appoint him?
Cortez was awful again. Warned Calzaghe constantly, let B-hop away with headbutts, wrestling, turning his back, faking low blows and he was itching to deduct a point from Calzaghe but knew that he couldn't after what he did to Hatton.

Cortez had a very rough fight to ref today..... I thought he did ok... as far as the hatton fight... I thought he did a terrible job.. however... if it were up to me... let the kids box... its not the Cortez show... we didn't order HBO or any PPV to watch you.. let em box, if one of them is dirty, then let the other be dirty...
Yeah, you're right man, Cortez knew he had to watch himself after he hit Ricky with the left hook and threw Ricky headfirst into the turnbuckle.
Damn that Cortez.
Damn him to hell.

cortez didn't do a bad job. clicnching is legal - unless you do hatton style of huggy defence.
bhop works in clinches. the worst thing the ref did was not deduct a point for joe's low blow.
are we forgetting the headbut from hopkins on the break? Stepping on joes feet? low blowing him on the inside? rofl
I hate watching Cortez do fights, he's always breaking up the action. He is way to quick to jump in. All he needs to do is say "fight out of it" and most clinches will fix themselves. Also I think Joe caught maybe 10% of the fouls by both fighters in tonights fight.
