Hopkins?
This is really odd, I was listening to Joe Calzaghe - In This Corner video which is a long video and Calzaghe was talking to some reporter guy and Pavliks camp keeps confirming they want Calzaghe? I call total bullshit on that. :boxing:
Hell, we keep hearing how Pavlik is calling out all these weaker middle weights to fight and then when I listened to this video when Calzaghe was talking to the reporter and they mentioned something like that, I don't think Pavliks camp is dumb enough to allow Pavlik to fight Calzaghe.
I also doubt that the fight will happen, but I can remember Joe stating in an interview that he would be willing to move back down to fight Pavlik if the money was right or something like that....
Of course, but I wouldn't respect the decision by Joe when there are some good fights at 175
Last weekend hasn't made 175 very attractive to Calzaghe. Woods was the obvious choice before his capitulation to Tarver so that's out and Tarver has no value as Hopkins done him over. As for the other fight, Dawson doesn't look remotely ready and Glen Johnson just isn't worth anything in legacy or money terms.
It might be Pavlik or retirement. There doesn't look much else out there. Jones maybe? The fact I'm even mentioning Jones shows the lack of options around there.
I honestly think this would be a Lacy-esque beating that Calzaghe would give to Pavlik.

I think there is a good chance this fight will get made.
From Joe's perspective, if he gets past Hopkins, he needs to fight a well regarded, name US opponent who is not over the hill. Pavlik is the perfect choice.
For Pavlik the fight would essentially push him into the upper echelon of fighters famewise, win or lose. He would be stepping up to to take on the Ring SMW and LHW champ, to whom there would be no shame in losing, but there is always the chance Joe might get old all of a sudden like Hopkins did against Taylor. A close fight either way might mean an even more lucrative rematch and Pavlik becoming a star.
I prefer not to be too cynical, sometimes fighters do make big fights that they could lose, and I absolutely believe the risk/ reward is there for both fighters.

I give this fight at most a 5% chance of ever happening. I think Joe stays at 175 the rest of his career and by the time Pavlik gets there Calzaghe will be retired.
Of all the fights that people are evenly remotely excited about, this is by far the lamest.
This fight would be a HUGE mistmatch. Pavlik didn't get rid of Taylor last fight. Calzaghe is HUGE compared to Taylor. Calzaghe almost dies making 168. I doubt Pavlik is hurting him.
Additionally, Joe has a great chin, which wouldn't matter, because Calzaghe has great movement, which would take away both Pavlik's accuracy and his workrate quite a bit.
Oh yeah, and Pavlik has experience against one elite fighter who fights exactly opposite of Calzaghe (including dominant hand) and a one-dimensional prospect. He is not ready for Joey Cal.
Does anyone think that Lacy probably hits harder than Pavlik can? I know I certainly do. Did Joe Calzaghe even break a sweat erasing the memory of Jeff Lacy and his family? Not really.
Calzaghe would crush Pavlik beyond belief. I'd definately push all-in on that.
Both of them has expressed interest in fighting each other. Calzaghe said he's willing to move back down to 168 to make the fight and Pavlik is willing to move up. But, Arum probably won't make it.
Pavlik is a BEAST - a non-stop punching machine, add to that - very heavyhanded too, right now, I would say he beats anyone he faces in his division...
