If you are a sucker for punishment, go ahead.
I do that shit against people who are taller and better skilled. Sooner or later, they'll give up, thinking they can't get to you.
But in fact, they very much do.
You need big balls, and I cannot lie.
Take it from this gentleman, I've seen him do it with my own eyes. There's nothing like a firsthand account and you just got one. :fing02:
i think winky's parring is underrated...he moves his arms with the shots to avoid much of the punishment....he squares his feet to use his upper body to flow with the punch...he doesnt look all stiff like abraham or sturm...

The thing about Winky is he makes it look so easy when in reality its one of the hardest styles to emulate. Having freakishly long arms helps him out a lot though.
i'm a southpaw and my stance is similar to winky wright - what should i do to get defense like him?
He perfected it over years of training/fighting. Plus his natural reflexes/ability is a big part of it.
Thats why when your guard is up, your gloves need to be actually touching your face so you dont get any bouncing... like when floyd puts his right hand up to guard.. he puts his glove right on the face... to act like a blocking cushion almost...
otherwise yes, you will get beat up with your own gloves... kinda like jones did in the first tarver fight
Yeah, takes a lot of practice to not get sloppy though.
As already mentioned, it's not a very good idea to emulate him.
You need long, big arms that can cover most of your body and even then, you'd have to be prepared to take punishing shots to your arms, not to mention almost everytime an opponent hits you in the arms, your gloves bounce right into your face. Could really bust you up.

Winky just pulls his belt line up high, thats why it makes it seems like he can defend the whole front of his body with his arms, when in all actuality its also partly the belt line... although he does have a good reach.

Winky uses the guard to facilitate his counter punching and positioning. Unless you have a granite chin, it may not be for you. There's a psychology to it - more than meets the eye. As a defense it's effective with judges because they don't score glove shots, but Winky takes punishment.
His arms are so fuckin long he can guard his face wit his hands and his body wit his elbows at the same time. Like someone else mentioned, he don't sell out for power so after he punches he can cover back up quick. He mostly just blocks but he also sees punches coming well enough to duck under some too.
I think Winky is very rare, i wouldnt practice to be like him unless you expect to take a lot of punishment. A lot of people enjoyed Roy Jones in the 90's but these fighters are one of a kind and shouldnt necessarily be emulated. Use bits and pieces and just work on using your skills to create your own style.
open hands to your temples. he has long forarm. and he doesnt commit to any punches so he is always ready to answer back. but also if you rock back after one of your jabs his shots fall short
