Hey Scully, I had seen that video before but never realized it was you. I didn't know you were such a trouble maker:rofl: Wish you faced him later on in the pro's. We'll it could've been worse you could've had someone parachute into the ring.
I tried for years to get a rematch... I won the fight, and was the favorite, ETC, BUT I knew that as pros a rematch would be big in our area (ALL of new England) and I tried hard to get it. To this day people talk about that fight with me. But he didnt want it for some reason.
And, yea, Ray was living comfortably LOL
Probably knew you'd beat him again.

I watched a bunch of amateurs fights that I found on youtube. The Hearns-Pryor wish it was a 12rounder it was very good, they both appeared to hurt each other a different times.
Would be interesting to see Hearns fighting today and see him against todays jrWW's.
Nice read Scully. Its amazing some of the weight classes some guys came from. Hard to imagine Byrd at WW or Hearns at 132lbs. Hey would it be possible for you to post a link to a few of these amateur fights. I would love to Pryor-Hearns.
Also you talk about guys who dont make it for whatever (a million possibilities) reason but of all the talented amateur fighters that you saw who is the fighter you are most surprised that didn't make it or didn't make it as far as you had thought his talent could've taken him?
I saw Byrd at 139...losing to Todd Foster in 1988. Tall and skinny, that was Chris
Damn that was a good fight for amateurs. That Terry guy had some nice uppercuts.......from that fight it appears that he was a natural southpaw who fought in the orthodox, am I right? Also what was the glove sizes, they looked pretty small.
ALL I REMEMBER IS THAT HE WAS A RIGHTY , NO IDEA IF HE WAS A SOUTHPAW TO START. I MYSELF WAS A SOUTHPAW IN THE VERY BEGINNING AND SPENT MOST OF MY CAREER, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH
In my book I have a chapter dedicated specifically to those guys you speak of, guys who didnt Make it for whatever reason. I talk a lot about Bernard Superbad Mayes...the AWESOME Cuban ANGEL ESPINOSA....Mylon Watkins, KevinBryant, Nick Kakouris, Bomani Parker..so many to remember.
Also, you can youtube the Pryor-Hearns amateur fight
Also, check this guy out...Terry Christianson, an elite amateur with over 300 fights who never went pro...I beat him at the nationals one year, he was definitely good....here he is...beating GERALD MCCLELLAN

I can't imagine how boxing would look if some of these talented guys went pro.
Those were great reads. Fascinating information. As Left2Body said, it's hard imagining the fighters you mention at such a low weight class.
Big shame about what happened to Mays.

I've met three Louisville natives of the relevant age who swear on having beaten Clay in schoolyard brawls.
I BET BET THERE ARE A HUNDRED PEOPLE FROM HIS ERA WHO SAY THEY BEAT HIM IN REAL AMATEUR FIGHTS, TOO, WHEN HE WAS A KID. We have a kid here in my area who never went pro...yet as an amateur he beat, among others, IBO 122 champ Mike Oliver, former WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria and current WBC 175 champion Chad Dawson!
