Cotto's camp will tell Cotto to test the body, which I think will do the job.
Body punches early, then around the 6th or 5th round... A sneaky short left hook on the inside.
Cotto by KO to the head in the 5th or 6th? ^
i think he starts as a boxer puncher...but i think gomez has the advantage there, so cotto will try to pressure after seeing this.....by that time, i hope gomez has a little psychological advantage and has cotto worn down a little, so he can counter him at mid range when cotto tries to slug it out...

I think you'll see a little of both.
He should box him early and feel him out (no homo). Once Gomez starts throwin and leaves himself open as he usually does, it's open season for Cotto.
This is quite senstional, Shawn. ^
Cotto isn't just hitting his opponents in the abs, sides, and traditional target areas.. As I've said on numerous occasions he's striking all areas of the body; hips, spine, shoulders - joint areas, neck, back.. And even occasionally lower if he's really feeling frisky..
you forgot kidneys
:lol1:
im almost sure if he KO's gomez, it will be on a kidney punch...
The problem for most of Cotto's opponents is how hard he hits to the body. The reason he is not an effective head puncher is the reason he is such a phenomenal body puncher.
Hurting sombody to the head requires sharp punching. Punches with snap on them. Punches that can send a shockwave through the brain.
Hurting sombody to the body requires a penetrating powerful punch. The kinds of punch that will compress the ribs and deliver all of that energy into the liver.
Cotto is the kind of body puncher that can hurt you even if he hits elbow.
Most people are not prepared for that. Taking a brutal beating to the body is not something you can really prepare for.
He can beat you down to the head, but it is more of a clubbing cumulative power, he doesn't have the snap required for a once punch knockout.
Unfortunately for his opponents, Miguel Cotto has an extensive amateur background and is an extremely competent boxer, so even if they are able to avoid his body and head punishment, he can still out box most people.

The only thing Cotto doesn't hit when he's in Body Destroyer mode are the soles of his opponents feet..
Any acupuncturist or incarcerated member of the Mexican mafia can tell you there are several dozen "kill points" or "sick points" on the human body. Points of vulnerability that can cause all sorts of reactions including nausea, motion sickness, blurred vision, loss of balance, diarrhea, loss of muscle coordination, numbness/tingling, sudden weakness.. You hit a guy in the right places enough times and you can turn him into a full blown AIDS patient in a matter of minutes.
He's a strong, penetrating puncher no doubt - but where he's hitting his opposition has more to do with the bended knees, and scrunched up faces, than the mechanics of his delivery.
A mixture of the two.
Cotto can circle and box from the outside while throwing those punishing hooks to the ribs.
I hope Gomez makes a decent fight out of it.

Cotto looks the part certainly, but does he really have actual power?
Why are guys always taking a knee?
Why isn't he knocking them out clean?
I think the answer is obvious..
It's pretty obvious that he didn't carry his power over from 140. People should remember that even at 140 Cotto never had true one punch knockout power so I doubt he will KO any large welterweight on a headshot especially at 147. If he has a lot of trouble even hurting Gomez then Margarito might be too much for him but we'll find out soon enough.
I actually felt sorry for Branco after their fight. It was painful to watch his entire upper body be broken like that. I'm sure he felt that for months after the fight.
Yeah, Gomez will be game, I know he will. I just think Cotto's power will prove to be too much. I could see some early body shots leading to that drastic outcome that you see in alot of Miguel fights.
Yeah anything is possible, I mean I'll shit limestone if Gomez just comes out and avoids punishment and is able to apply his own effectively. I can actually see that early, but its hard to imagine him bein able to do it for 12. But if he can, lol wow, good for him if he can pull it off.
I find this matchup fascinating if only for that reason. Cotto has a reputation as a destroyer, whether it be the "body" or elsewhere. Gomez is supposed to be a tough shit who has already danced with guys naturally much bigger than he.. If Cotto can KO Gomez in a show of raw power, it will be another feather in his cap. That's for damn sure.
Shane Mosley has never been knocked out before. Never. We're talking all the way back to first grade on a playground.. No human being has ever knocked out Shane Mosley, and yet, a healthy number of people including some "experts" thought Cotto could do it.. Now Cotto is facing another guy who has never been knocked out, and people think he can do it..

Miguel Cotto is very much like a robot. He has several subroutines that he goes through one at a time.
This is how it looks from Cotto's perspective.
Objective #1: Destroy the body...... accessing
Destroying the body.......objective failed.
Objective #2: Destroy the head...... accessing
Destroying the head....... objective failed.
Objective #3: Stick and move..... accessing
Sticking and moving....... objective complete.
Picture that in green text scrolling across Cotto's vision.
HaHAHA!! Classic.
i think cotto will take the night off and just
do enough to win with flashes of skill here and there.
gomez has nothing to loose here and think he will bring his "a" game which is equal to cotto's "b-" game.
God I hope so. That would be great as far as I'm concerned.
I can't predict fights, I mean if Gomez comes out on his feet, I can only imagine him being able to keep any success he has for a few rounds. And thats just assuming he comes out focused at the first bell. But if I had to choose, I'ma give my Gomez some credit, I see him gettin stopped after 4. As for how? lol Shit pick any punch you want, Cotto can take him down with just about anything I'd think.
Ok, I was only wondering because Cotto hasn't demonstrated excessive levels of power to the head. And of course Gomez has a very good chin.
But this is Boxing, anything is possible.
I could definately see a body shot KO early though..
