CANCUN, Mexico: Jose Luis Castillo failed to make weight for his 140-pound WBC eliminator bout on Friday, forcing the cancellation of yet another important fight for a boxer with a long history of weighty problems.
Castillo didn't even show up at an amphitheater next to Nichupte Lagoon for the weigh-in before his fight with Timothy Bradley on the undercard of Saturday's WBC heavyweight title bout between Oleg Maskaev and Samuel Peter.
When Castillo weighed himself Thursday night, he was 147 pounds — and two hours before the official weigh-in, he still topped the scales at 144 1/2 pounds, Bradley's camp said. While Castillo headed home to Mexicali, Mexico, Bradley was left frustrated by at least Castillo's fourth major problem making weight in the last few years.
"It hurts the sport bad, and something needs to be done to Castillo," Bradley said. "He needs to be suspended. He needs to vanish from boxing. We don't need to see his name in the ratings."
Bradley, an undefeated contender from Palm Springs, Calif., said WBC president Jose Sulaiman has promised to make him the No. 1 challenger to super lightweight champion Junior Witter, guaranteeing Bradley a title shot.
At this point, its time for Castillo to hang them up. He has nothing else to prove. Hes has done what he wanted to in the sport, won some belts, and gave Mayweather is toughest test to date. He will be nothing more than a stepping stone if he continues to fight on.
Sucks. Most fighters lost the finally pound a day or days before there weigh in, Castillo can't anymore and officially should go to 147.
Good think this was in Mexico and not the Us cause Castillo don't need another fine against him.
edit: Bradley should thank Castillos weight problems the fight didn't go on cause Castillo was going to abuse Bradley. So Bradley needs to shut the fuck up, he got a free pass to a title shot.
Yikes
Seems like straining himself so bad to make 135 for years after he should've moved up to 140 has damaged him a lot. His body just can't cut the wait anymore. Chico was in the same situation, and both men really should've moved up in weight far earlier to extend their careers. A shame what has happened since their first fight, it's pretty crazy.
yea i heard, this is incredible.
Rumors were flying for days now that Castillo was not going to make wait, and the Bradly camp was already aware that they were probably going to have to cancel the fight.
My best guess is that Castillo COULD make 140, but his heart isnt in the sport anymore
what in the bullshit is that? castillo is a fuck face for doing this yet again. i had a feeling he wouldn't make it when reports came out last week of him not being ready. 1 or 2 times, okay, that's fine. this is like the 3rd, 4th time - correct me if i'm wrong. sorry, but he needs to retire. what a way to end his career.
