“Cotto has a strong KO ratio against good solid fighters. And, he showed against Mosley that he can also box and counterpunch,” Gomez said. “But styles make fights, and his style is suitable for me because I’m faster and my boxing and counterpunching skills are superior. I hope he doesn’t underestimate me. I’ve seen him face fighters that he’s taken for granted and he looks awful when he doesn’t take his opponent seriously.”
“People are saying that if I last past five rounds, then they will lose respect for Cotto,” Gomez continued. “He’s an undefeated world champion. I’ve got a tsunami against me, but I’m not running away from it, I’m running toward it because I know the odds are against me but that will make victory so much sweeter.”
Alfonso Gomez, February 2008
Yes, I have wondered how he would react if he wasn't the stronger man in there. I an intrigued by the thought of Cotto's reaction when fighting a bigger, stronger man like Margarito.
Now, I know people will stone me for even thinking of this, but Margarito could prove just the type of fighter to either bring out the best of Cotto or to show his weaknesses.
Margarito throws exactly those mean, long uppercuts that could devastate Cotto...
I don't think too highly of Margarito as a boxer, but I'd like to see Cotto in the ring with him before a Mayweather showdown.
Cintron will fold yet again, so I won't take that fight into consideration.
Absolutely, I think Margarito can cause Cotto ALOT of problems. I also agree Margarito isn't the best Boxer. But he has the kind of power and pressure to take Cotto out early, or if need be late. Cotto would have to be on his bike Boxing and moving to stand much of a chance. If Top Rank didn't represent Margarito I doubt they would consider matching him with Cotto.
Gomez has never shown me anything which leads me to believe he is better at any of these things. Cotto's speed in general has surprised fans, scribes and his opponents respectively.
Technique wise I hardly see Cotto making errors with respect to punching. His straight punches are straight and his hooks/uppercuts are compact. He works behind a stiff jab and throws in combination well, rarely wasting much.
Ricardo Torres and Kelson Pinto can testify to Cotto's counter punching ability.
I hear you, Tys. Excellent points.
I think the main thing we're gonna see is that Cotto is not far superior to someone like Gomez. I also agree with you that Cotto's strength can be questioned to some extent - whether it be physical or mental when he's in a dogfight with a strong opponent who pushes back. His ability as a Boxer is a little bit of a mystery to me as well, though he did put on a fantastic display with Mosley. It would be more conclusive for me if Mosley didn't make it soo easy for Cotto.
I haven't seen Gomez live which is surprsing considering our proximity.

So what you're saying is that it can be a blowout or a good, close fight depending on what type of Gomez we're going to see?
It's easy to get over-impressed by Cotto when you watch him against lesser opponents, but against Mosley he showed he was human in the strength departement also.
I really don't know how good of a boxer he really is, as running away from Mosley in the last rounds really shouldn't be considered masterful boxing ability.
But I'm watching some clips of Gomez right now and I got to say his defence is a little leaky to say the least.
Have you seen this kid live?
Great post by the way! :beerchug:

That is a sad mischaracterization. Like The Ring said; "hitting Cotto with the right hand is like hitting a billboard with a snowball."
Just because Mosley was landing some golf swing home run right hands doesn't mean his timing was any good. The uppercuts? Those weak ass jabbing uppercuts that he wasn't following through on? Oh yeah, those are the next easiest punch to land on Cotto if not the FIRST.
Yes, and we must credit Mosley for his bodywork.. You have to have perfect timing to land a body shot.. It's an exremely difficult target and all..
If anybody wonder, Addison was somewhat disappointed by the (by Mosley's standards) weak showing from Sugar Shane!
Mosley was timing the right hand all night. Even timed in some uppercuts. You are selling him very short. His body work was also very solid. Surviving on toughness would not have won him five rounds.
Gomez hasn't had to take any punishment for 2 fights. He wont be as effective once Cotto lands leather. He's superior in every way. Only way he loses is if his chin lets him down, and it seems to be pretty solid right now.

Well, regardless of whether Gomez was scoring on a crusty old Gatti, he was throwing punches with more zip on them than I have ever seen come from the shoulders of Miguel Cotto. Of course many of those shots were fully extended straights. Gomez was also throwing slow lazy looking punches in combination with some of these faster shots. Cotto throws a four punch combo and all the shots are the same speed.
When it comes to Boxing and counterpunching it's also difficult to make the call because Gomez shows flashes of superior mechanics, better head movement, better footwork, and better positioning to land his power shots. But Gomez is consitantly inconsistant in his execution and follow through in these categories as well. And Cotto is extremely consistant. Cotto is also extremely strong and he can get away with lunging in and throwing desperation shots in transition because he can move his opponent with the force of his momentum. This creates all sorts of openings for Cotto, but is not nescessarily Boxing technique.
To me there is no question whatsoever. Alfonso Gomez is a much better counterpuncher. Cotto is a transition fighter, not a tactician, and not a counterpuncher. He's an instinctive fighter. Good thing for Evangelista..

I don't know, Addison.
This fight has written slaughter all over it. I'll admit that I don't know much about Gomez, but I can't see him winning this fight.
He might be delusional in saying all those things, or he might be trying to fool somebody.
The only way he can win, is with toughness and a brilliant gameplan IMO.
What's your thoughts?

This Dude Gomez
Is a homemade boxer if anyone even considers him one, I damn sure dont. He
beat a washed-up Gatti now he thinks he can hang with the pros, I dont believe the Cotto camp even took this bullshit fight. My take is the chump wont
pass the 8th round. Cotto by {KO}..........Stay-Up G"s -Up All day every day!!
J.M.R.
lol...what did mosley do??ill tell you what he did...go forward, stand in front of cotto and pull straight back with 0 jabs and only looking for right hands...mosley's timing was shit....and in rounds the fight was still close....a mosley fighting on his toughness alone almost won...if mosley wasnt so fucking tough that fight wouldve looked like cotto-bailey...
alfonso's fundamentals are waay better than mosley's at this point...even if he doesnt have the power or speed(wich i dint see much from mosley by the way, but maybe cus he couldnt even throw punches properly)...
if alfonso shows the kind of toughness that mosley showed, he will win...

The only problem with going into a contest believing that you have better arsenal than your opponent is finding out you have miscalculated in the midst of heavy fire. That doesn't always end well..

I think Mosley would demolish Gomez even right now. Mosleys timing was off because of the Cotto Jab.
Alfonso might be tough, but how much damage can he accumalate for 12 rounds? Who has he fought? Hes way over his head because of his past 2 wins Way past prime and Tackie was landing some good shots. Cotto is faster than both Tackie and Gatti.
Gomez is gonna get humiliated man.. I can feel it. This fight is nowhere competetive than what people seem. People only say that because of Cotto being hurt in his past fights. It happens to the best.
but gomez went to box outside against tackie...which he cant do properly imo...if he tries to do that shit against cotto he is gonna get pumelled, i dont think alfonso is stupid, he knows he must test cotto's chin...he knows he is bigger, he knows he has a longer jab and a better reach..he knows cotto is available to overhand rights even if tehy land on the forhead...and he wont get greedy with them like mosley because alfonso has always liked to vary his attack...he will test cotto's body too...and he has enough fundamnetals to not get puched as much as mosley even if he isnt as tough, but he is tough enough to endure a lot of shots..

Left hook to the body, end of the night for Gomez
It's inevitable.
Gomez's softness in the belly is just a horrific target. Coupled with him being stationary I don't think this fight goes 4 rounds.
1. He's nowhere near Cotto's level technically.
2. Cotto is in much better shape, in every facet.
3. Cotto has fought the stiffer comp.

Gomez doesn't hit harder than Mosley.
PLus the fight won't go that way, because Gomez is gonna come straight forward.
This fight isn't going passed 6. As much as I know that Gomez can probaly land a shot (this is boxing) I just don't see it happening, and from the sounds of his quote I seem him applying pressure to Miguelito and it might be a big problem.

There is not 1 single thing Gomez does better than Cotto..........except cover his face using little defense and doing a punching bag impression.
