I do not know how many of you had the oppritunity to see the HBO special Joe Louis American Hero Betrayed,I missed the premiere and had a chance to catch the replay tonight and I must admit(at the risk of being critisized and made fun of)this story will make your eyes water.I was aware before watching this story that Joe Louis had troubles with the IRS,but I did not realize the extremes they went through to take everything they could possibly take from him.Besides being one of the greatest If not the greatest heavyweight fighter ever Joe Louis was an honorable man that In no way shape or form deserved what he was put through.
that's besides the point. IMO though Louis still managed to live a very charmed life even after he had been committed and "broke." Eating well and gambling for free.
The guy did get screwed.. What I don't understand is if he owed 100k after ww2 and made 650k after the second billy conn fight why didn't he just pay his debt right there..all in all he prob lived a better life than most ww2 vets who actually fought in the war

That's my opinion too. It's his own fault he didn't pay his taxes.
On a side note, why does Larry Merchant always pose for pictures holding up his fists like he's a fighter?
Schmeling wasn't in the habit of blowing his money.

Yes he was reckless with his money,but....after all he did for this country, after all his efforts during WWII...they had the nerve to come back and collect taxes on money that he gave them.
The country screwed him royally...an American company,Coke...made Max Smelling a millionaire, but Joe...ended up with nothing.

If you want to know the real story about his tax problems you can find it in Joe Louis's autobiography. He admits that in those days he would often make more money in one fight than most people earned in a lifetime, then he would go out and blow it. People who are reckless tend to get into financial problems.
