I don't think many Americans know who Thompson is, which kind of goes against the idea of adding more interest, but he has shown to be a good boxer and he's not a short guy. Two things he has going for him.
Doesn't look like he's a huge puncher though and his chin is still a question.
Any chance of Thompson getting a shot?
in regards to thompson, he is the only heavyweight over the past 3 years who has gotten consistently better with each trip to the ring. he is without a doubt the most underrated fighter in the division.
i wouldnt hesitate for a second to pick him to beat sam peter or oleg maskaev were he in one of their spots.
i dont think the foot stepping would be as much as issue with thompson. sultan fought with a wide base leaning back a lot which meant wlad had to try to get as close as possible to land a shot. tony is a very upright fighter and doesnt lean away from punches, mostly blocks them with his gloves.
thompson and klitschko woulf probably be an entertaining fight imo. thompson is a volume puncher and he would be ready to go out on his shield against wlad. wlad in return would be forced to throw a lot more punches otherwise tony may start banking rounds.
Exactly. Maybe Wlad gasses out late after punching glove all night. But yeah, Tony's not gonna back down and won't have a hard time hitting Wlad.
Didn't Travis Walker get knocked out in 15 seconds by a security guard just recently (okay TJ had a good amatuer career, but he was inactive as hell the last few years?)
Now that you mention it Walker is having a rematch with that guy this Friday on Shobox.
I think this last fight proves that nothing is a given with Wlad. Thompson would have to watch for Wlad stepping on his foot and listen for when Wlad's Russian trainers shout for the right hand like Drago did Apollo. He could possibly build an early lead by outboxing and then weather the desperation storm from Wlad who'll be looking for the late KO. Tony definitely deserves his shot though.

I haven't watched enough of Thompson to really make a call....he's a southpaw though, correct? about 6'4", pretty big guy. When I think of Wlad fighting a big rangey southpaw....I can't get the Sanders KO out of my head, but Wladimir has come a long way since.
did you watch the video on the main page of thompson sparring with travis walker? i dont know why walkers people let that get out, thompson was beating the shit out of travis

actually I havent, thanks for the heads up. Ill check it out right now
I feel bad for Tony. hes trying so hard to get his title shots or even a meaningful fight...he just doesnt have a big name. Ive been checking up to see if he has even a 'stay busy' type fight scheduled, but nothing since he knocked out Couser
I read an online interview last month and Thompson said he was waiting for the outcome of the Klitschko-Ibragimov fight to see if he gets his shot at the WBO.
So we'll probably know more in the next few weeks now.
Wlad vs Thompson would be great, nice to see Wlad fight someone his own size and see if he can dominate even there.
I think Wlad would be too quick and powerfull for Thompson, but anything could happen.
Wlad came out totally unharmed last night, so I believe it increases the chances for a showdown with Thompson on the near future, probably May?
Anyway, I'm sure Wlad will try to land a fight with Chagaev before settling for Thompson and that may take a few weeks.
Is it possible that Wlad may vacate the WBO belt rather than fight Thompson?
I guess Povetkin won't stand in the way as his camp has already said they are willing to do the fight on the second semester.
Yep, he was beating up Travis.

the only thing that could ever possibly point to a Thompson win is his consistancy...he is always coming forward, throwing punches.
who knows, if Wlad decides to only jab and not throw a single right hand until the 8th round, Thompson could get the win...because Wlad is terrible at counter punching, and Thompson could prevent him from ever punching ever by constant pressure. :ugh:
but I seriously doubt it. A lot.

wlad/thompson would be a total stinker. wald just seems to have trouble letting his hands go against awckward southpaws. him and povetkin would be much more exciting

From Thompson's perspective, he's not getting any younger at 36, so he should want to get in there and find out, either way.
He's a pretty good boxer who can win rounds before he gets knocked out. :boxing:
Thompson has a long jab and is pretty slick with his southpaw style. That's about all I can really say about his chances though. Klitschko would be the heavy favorite against a lot of guys, I agree.

He'll have to face Thompson if he wants to keep the WBO title, so I'd say there's a pretty good chance of the fight happening.
Klitschko beats him if they get in the ring.
DONT KNOW WHO THOMPSON IS?!?!
I know who he is. haha
Thompson actually should be getting a shot, because hes been denied a title shot forever...but truth be told, Wlad is too fast, too skilled for Thompson. I think everyone knows this.
