I read a thread earlier asking about Tszyu v. Cotto at 144lbs. That's certainly a tough fight to pick, but then I thought that this match-up was even more of a pick 'em. These are two of my favorite fighters of the last several years, so I have plenty of reasons to pick either one. Although Mosely skipped over Junior Welter altogether to fight ODLH, I thinks it safe to say that he would have been a force at the weight coming up from lightweight. Tszyu's credentials at 140 are well established.
I got to go with Tszyu. Mosley's power at 135 was extremely overated. Have you checked out the fighters he was fighting at that weight. Tszyu is an underrated boxer and you can't forget that he was a top amateur even beating Vernon Forrest a boxer puncher. I know that Mosley was fast as hell but is often wild at times when he tries throwing punches like E Honda which would Tszyu would counter. Mosley's power never translated well past his 135 days with the occasional exception of bums like Willy Wise or Vargas.
Kosta. To powerful for mosley. Don't underestimate this russian/australian. He was a top fighter.
I'd never underestimate Tszyu. That's why I picked him by a close decision. I wouldn't underestimate Shane either. Tszyu had big power, but Shane has always had a great chin and recuperative powers (and his power at 135lbs was also excellent). This fight would have been a barn burner, but I think both guys' chins would have held up for twelve.
Whats that old saying folks ?? timing beats speed right ?? and i will actually go with that logic and say Tszyu could pull it out, Mosley was never a great pure boxer, he was more of a boxer/puncher. Mosley does get hit quite a lot he isn't a defensive master by any means, Mosley's speed would trouble Tszyu badly but like i said earlier Tszyu has excellent timing and he could time a right hand bomb and put Mosley on his backside. It really depends on how much Tszyu can time Mosley, if he can't time Mosley effectively then Mosley would walk away with a clear cut UD.
You can't use his fight againt Cotto as reference. His style has gotten "lazy" to put it, he stands around a bit too long without jabbing/moving.
In his prime if he fights like he did against DLH, Mosley by Decision.
Yeah, I think that Tszyu got labeled as a pure puncher for much of his career, but he had excellent boxing skills as he showed against guys like Ben Tackie. I agree with you on your point about Mosely as boxer. He certainly has the speed, but his boxing technique is far from conventional. He would have given Tszyu lots of opportunities with his "power boxing" style. Tszyu was the better boxer. Mosely was the better athlete. Still not sure who the better fighter was.
My gut tells me to lean toward Tszyu, but just barely. Mosely's speed and power at lightweight were amazing, so I wonder how Kostya would have dealt with it. Unlike Judah, Mosely could have kept his energy for the full twelve so he would have been a threat until the bell. Like Judah, though, I doubt that Mosely would have been able to stick to a high movement game plan. He loves to mix it up and because of excellent power and confidence in his sturdy chin, I am sure that he would have elected to go toe-to-toe with Tszyu far more than he really had to. I think that Tszyu had greater punching power and his straighter punches would probably have done more damage over the course of the fight. Mosely's chin is too good for him to get KO'd IMO, but I think Tszyu might bust him up enough to win a close, but clear decision.
Ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably pick Shane.
Very tough fight to call. Mosley had the superior hand speed, but KT was an underrated boxer. I think Shane's chin serves him well and he wins a hard fought decision.
