Unless Povetkin's goal is to make a few millions and retire, he should never take the fight with Wlad. Wlad would pick him apart from the distance and KO faster than he did Brock. Povetkin's lack of defense would make it a target practice for Wlad, it would be pathetic. I'm no big fan of Wlad but it would be a waste of the fight.
On paper Wladimir Klitschko would appear to be the best heavyweight in the history of boxing. Other than his brother, physically there has never been anybody like him. In terms of talent his brother is not even close. He is intelligent, well trained and very dedicated. So why do all these strange things happen when he gets in the ring?
One thing I have to agree with, the smart money is on Klitschko if the rest of these bums don't clean up their act. Chances are most of them won't.
There's a mental shortcoming there, we as his fans have to admit. But he does have mental strength outside the ropes, and this helped him deal with the losses. He doesn't need a sense of his own invincibility to be successful, he knows he can get iced. But he also knows if he trains properly it's unlikely, because the guy across from him is never his equal in talent.
I think Wlad will lose again, but it's going to take a good fighter on a great night. I don't see Ibragimov, Peter, Chagaev, Povetkin, Gomez, etc., being the guy anytime soon.
I am a huge Wlad fan and I'll admit potatoes is partly right. He is not a "real fighter" in the sense Povetkin is. He is a gentleman. He does have a mean streak, but I couldn't see him winning fights against superior boxers and punchers. The problem is, for him right now there are no superior boxers or punchers. The good money is on him to destroy any of the current contenders.
What Wlad has going for him, other than his innate gifts, is his intense preparation and condition, and his scientific approach to technique and strategy.
One thing I'll disagree with potatoes on: why it took so long to snap the jab against Brock is that Klit uses the jab first defensively, and after he's staked out a vulnerability he uses it to punish.

You have to understand Povetkins will to fight the best I mean the guys an Olympic champion with a great amateur record and hes already 28 this the reason why he thinks now is the time to fight the best. Hes only got a few years left. The way I see it he doesnt have the power to beat Klitschko but has a good chance against everyone else

I kind of agree. Povetkin would probably look bad in losing to Wlad.
byrd, brock and austin and brewster all fought wlad for the money, they knew they were gonna get mowed over
byrd knew hed make a couple mill to lose his title to wlad, otherwise hed have to defend it 3-4 times against anyone else to make the same amount
ray austin.. lol... he wouldnt make more than 100 grand fighting anyone not named klitschko
Wladimir Klitschko had a very well managed career, something every boxer would have liked to have. Sooner or later he has to face real opposition. What have we seen when he has had to overcome a bit of adversity? He tends to lose. Klitschko had four not so tough fights against opponents he should have beaten easily, yet found away to lose three of them. The only reason he didn't lose the fourth is because Sam Peter wasn't in shape. What do we see him doing in the easy fights? How about Chris Byrd for example? Klitschko decided to play huggybear, and for no apparent reason because Byrd wasn't doing anything. Why does it take forever to knockout a guy who is just standing in front of you? I can assure you Muhammad Ali or Larry Holmes would have knocked him out the first round.
Go back a watch the tape of his fight against Brock and you will hear Jim Lampley mention that somebody must have "flipped a switch" when Klitschko finally started snapping the jab at Brock. Brock had no idea how to deal with the jab, and it was just a question of time before Klitschko knocked him out. But why did it take so long to start snapping the jab? The correct answer to that question is that Klitschko is not a real fighter. A man who doesn't like to fight is vulnerable to any man who does. Povetkin likes to fight.
so all those international fighters wlad beat to win the gold were all garbage and all his 49 victories were against hand picked club fighters? your big time over exagerrating his weaknesses and for the record sam peter was in very good shape at a tight 243 lbs. his lightest weight in years. he got worn down by wlads strong jab and all the clinching and leaning on peter wlad was doing added to this

I would pick wlad decision simply cuz I have no idea what povetkin's chin is like and he'll need that chin with his lack of defense. If he has a good chin then he MIGHT have a chance cuz he has a good workrate for a hw. and for ppl that say he needs some more fights, he is 28 years old, he is in his prime right now so regardless of his few pro fights he has to fight wlad now cuz who else can he fight to get ready for wlad? there is no other active fighter in the world that fights like wlad so it would be a moot point for him to fight 2,3, or even 4 times to get ready for wlad.
if it was that easy,,,wlad wouldnt have won a gold medal or 49 of his 52 pro fights. you have a good point but are exaggerating his weaknesses

I think Wlad is just much better at this point. Povetkin needs at least two more years to attain a level necessary to seriously challenge Wlad.
I only hope that fighting Wlad this early would not destroy Povetkin's career.
Two more years of repeating the same mistakes won't do him a bit of good. What Povetkin needs is better training. Klitschko has been beaten by lesser men than Povetkin because he ain't nearly as tough as he looks.
Yeah, but you failed to mention the intangibles. Povetkin is a fighter, Klitschko is a prettyboy masquerading as a fighter. Povetkin was obviously not in shape for the fight against Chambers and we could all see that he had to reach down very deep to maintain his high work rate. Klitschko, on the other hand, has shown in the past that he collapses like a house of cards when facing a bit of adversity. Povetkin wants to fight and he wants to win. Klitschko merely fights because he thinks he can win. To beat Klitschko all Povetkin has to do is a little bit of head movement to make it hard for Klitschko to hit him. Once Klitschko has something to worry about, the fight is over.
Before every fight, we all know what opponents have to do to win the fight with Klitschko. So do they, I'm sure. But don't you think that Steward doesn't see these things and prepares Klitschko for them? It's very easy to say, "I'm going to rush on the inside with my head moving, my lateral movement will be the best since Tyson", etc., etc. For some reason, those plans tend to go awry when they face a 6'7" 250lb fighting machine who's jab makes your face swell up in the first round. Klitschko has his flaws such as stamina issue, mental preparedness, being scared of being punched, etc. But he learned to control them, for which he has my respect.

Have you been living on Mars all your life? First off Povetkin was in good shape against Chambers, no need to make excuses his average fighting weight is 226, against Chambers he was 227...
Second he has to do more then a little head movement against Wlad. If Wlad was able to catch a prime Chris Byrd at will with his jab and right hand, then Povetkin is gonna be destroyed. Not to mention his chin has never been tested, a right hand or left hook from Klitschko will probably most likely take his head off.
The kid needs atleast two more years fighting contenders before he steps up to Wlad. People dont realize how high above Wlad is over everyone else in the heavyweight division.
speak with your mind not your heart...
potatoes is right
EVERY top15 Heavyweight I fight I watch is competitive and most seem to end up in decsions...
Wlad dominates them and knocks them out..
I suspect Ibragimov Povetkin and Chagaev would be no different..
Anyone who gets taken to a close draw By Austin.. anyone who has to Scrap for 12 rounds straight against Skelton.. andyone who gets hit almost seemingly at will, like Povetkin Just has no chance ... beyond the KO punch.. against a chin that is better than most people give it credit for..
Wlad can always break mentaly.. but he seems to be evenly paced and aware of it now..That pretty much sums it up. The division is very competitive, but Wlad is a league above everyone else right now.
Yeah if Chambers can light him up with his straight right imagine what Wlads will do.......
That's right. Povetkin set it up for him, Chambers merely threw the punch. If that has been Klitschko, Povetkin would now be in the hospital. I am still wondering if he is learning anything in the school of hard knocks.
