Now that Calzaghe and Hopkins is pretty much official with news of the press conference being held on friday, who is the best fighter that jones could beat? Not who he should be fighting, but the highest level of opponent that he could beat.
I say he should go for Zsolt Erdei or Lucien Bute. Those are top players in their divisions and Jones could certainly handle both of them.
Roy needs to make any of the 168 guys come up to 175. No need to drain yourself for anyone but Tito. The best fighter he can beat is probably Clinton Woods who just beat Glen Johnson, and is perhaps about to beat Tarver.
Whilst I respect the opinions of Kswizzy, I still think Roy would have trouble eating the kind of uppercuts Kessler doled out to Joe. OK he would have to actually hit him, I accept that, but I feel Roy needs a fast but inexperienced up and comer to test his reflexes, someone he will beat, but someone he will have to work hard against. My reasoning is that Kessler's handspeed is quicker than Tito's and, although he looks like that classic upright European style boxer, he's got a bit more about him tham we maybe give him credit. Maybe Kessler / Bute or Froch ???
Anyway best not to mess with Swizz, or he'll get his training partner Georges St Pierre on you! And those Quebecois are bred much tougher than their French cousins, no white flags in that part of Canada
He'll have to be more aggressive that he was against TITO though, if he want a decision. Jones is as accurate as anyone, but Cal-Z throws alot of punches... The judges in Wembley will have the ammunition to toss Cal-Z close rounds. I think this ends badly for Jones. I don't want to argue about what punches landed months from now.
i agree... and roy will have to make sure he makes it obvious... there WILL be a US judge, a judge from somewhere else, and one from wales though
i know i understand.. but at this point in roys career... its not his choice.. if wants a shot at the title.. hes not gettin the lions money, hes not fightin where he wants too... he knows it... hes said it... he just wants the opportunity to try to redeem an illustrous career... and i hope he pulls it off

no hes definitely not prime anymore... and his time IS limited.. and I hope he makes a meaningful fight SOON before this new found energy is gone for good... if he gets a fight w joe, if joe beats bernard.. your gonna witness, one, motivated, roy jones jr... to go out on a title, and set another record... and erase the way he was going to go out witht he knockouts... he will be motivated beyond motivated, and thats dangerous for anyone
After what happened in Seoul do you think that fight should be in London... Have you seen Kasitdis/Earl? The brits can be shady...
Do you think Roy Jones Jr. went back to the future and found his prime again or what? Dude is done he looked alright but I guarantee he does not make any "real" noise in any division!!!!

Jones already took woods in 6, and he is much better now mentally than he was than. Erdei and Green have no where near the skills of a trinidad and they would get beaten by decision by a much larger margin.

well I think he can beat 3 of the light heavyweight title holders easily...
Erdei
Woods
Green
I also say he beats hopkins..
among others.. but thats what comes to mind for now

What wasn't an illusion was him getting SMASHED by Tarver and Johnson!!!! Them guys exposed Jones Jr. It's funny to me that his age only plays a part when he loses but when he wins he is instantly back!!!! Didn't every fight fan know going in Tito would have problems against the naturally bigger man? Wasn't Tito a 3 or 4 to 1 underdog? Basically Jones beat someone he was supposed to beat, he beat a natural WW who has only fought twice since '04, so what makes this win so good? If Jones was still as good as you guys say he is that's just sad b/c I was giving him the benefit of the doubt in his loses to Tarver and Johnson due to age!!!!
first off, if you watched the analysis from the commentators during the fight against trinidad, they said that him losing weight after his heavyweight fight played a big factor in his down fall. that wasn't walk-around fat that he lost which is easy, he had to lose 30 pounds of muscle. that hasn't been done before, its very draining. he would beat tarver and johnson in a rematch if he fights with his new style. jones has his offensive game in tact + his new winky wright defense. his defense was just as effective as wrights is and he has that punching speed. its the perfect combination of skills. you aren't giving him enough credit but you will in due time. just wait, by the end of this year, your opinions about him will be changed unless you are a true hater and will make up some more nonsense.
trinidad fought like trinidad. he wasn't rusty or anything. he tried his best to ko jones and he had good conditioning cuz he lasted till the end even though he got knocked down. if you put trinidad in the ring with vernon forrest, you will see what would happen. even though trini will fight the same, ppl will say only if trini was in that condition against jones. the same goes for roy against calz or kessler, he would destroy those 2 and ppl will say "kessler hasn't been the same since fighting calz" or visa versa.
Jones' age is an illusion and ppl should not be considering it. Cuz all the things that suppose to come with that age haven't happend to jones. Jones is still faster than anyone and he can still fight in the 12th round just as good as in the 1st round. That is more than you can say about alot of great conditioned prime fighters right now.

that ill agree with
calzaghe is a potential problem.. kessler not so much

I think Trinidad looked better than Jones, which is rare considering he lost (in convincing fashion at that) but I think Trinidad could make noise in the WW division if he continues training instead of taking long layoffs. I don't think Jones could ever beat Calzaghe or Kessler or any SMW that matter. All my opinions but Trinidad has a better chance at doing anything especially if he could line up a rematch with DLH!!!!
u think trinidad looked better than jones? thats... extremely.... interesting.
or what you mean to say is: trinidad looked MORE like his formerself than ROY looking like his formerself...
which may be true... but when they said back in his prime... roy could lose half his ability and still compete at top level.. i dont think they were lying... he cant dominate like he used to... but he can definitely compete...
your opinions on roy vs kessler or calzaghe.. are just that... and of course you, like the rest of us... are all entitled to our own. :)
that of course, is all opinion and speculation... the only point i was making, is the tools he still has left... and tito wasnt as bad as everyone says.. i thought, as well as emanuel steward, max kellerman, and jim lampley all thought tito looked VERY good,.... all things considering

Alright, but when looking at his tools you have to decide if his tools simply looked good b/c it was a ring rusted underweight Trinidad or if Roy Jones has changed that much since getting KO'd by Tarver and Johnson? His tools looked good but I have a feeling if he fought a prime fighter like Kessler he would look even worse than that Roy that got KO'd!!!!

im simply rating, what hes been through, and what tools he still has at 39... i understand the significance of the opponent
