He's been fighting once a year for like 3 years now. Inactivity doesn't effect him as bad as it should, so I don't see why he needs one. Besides September is a long time ass break too. That's like 6 months.
I wish he'd fight Floyd in May so we can just get this fight out of the way and Mayweather can go fight Cotto. He's not ducking Cotto. Mayweather's just one greedy bastard. Huge difference, but the fans still lose out.
Screw the tune up and get on with the fight.
If you honestly think that in the end, Mayweather will get CLOSE to what De La Hoya will, you're insane.
Exactly, Oscar made 52 million in the last fight, Floyd made 25 million. Floyd can't make any where near as much fighting anyone else that he can fighting Oscar, and Oscar is not exactly the toughest fight out there for Floyd. Plus if for some reason Floyd did lose, he just fights him again and he has that all important trilogy with an ATG on his resume.
No way will DLH fight 3 times in 2008. I wish I could bet money on that. If he fights in May & Sept no way he will fight again in 08. This is DLH we're talking about. He's said very similar things in the past and they've never materialized
Well if Floyd needs some rest fine, but I'm sure if Oscar were to offer him like 2 more million he wouldn't need it at all.
While there is a big event after the tune up, there's an even bigger event after the big event. Maybe Cotto-Mayweather wouldn't do as big of numbers, but it's still great for the sport.
Or like I said, even if Oscar were to fight the tune up at 147 pounds would be great. I'm sure if Mayweather-De La Hoya 2 were to happen at 147, then Oscar would become the #1 ranked WBC challenger. Then we don't have to worry about Mayweather fighting Berto first. This fight just makes a lot more sense for the 147 title then it does if it was at 154.
I'm sure De La Hoya wouldn't be that bad against Steve Forbes at 147. He'd crush him even there.
If the tune up happens and the second DLH-PBF fight happens, they both need to be at 147.
I read that ODLH plans on fighting 3 times in 2008, and that the tune-up is scheduled to keep him active and sharp, while giving the fans a free fight on HBO

Mayweather Is Calling The Shots In This Fight]
Floyd said he wanted a long break which is why they aren't fighting in May and Oscar let him have it. Floyd will also be getting 50% of the split even money this time around. Oscar isn't controlling shit time. He is getting another oppritunity to finish his career of right......let's see what he does with it.

Yes he would, which is why he's doing it.
Mayweather SHOULD. It's a smart idea. Sells more tickets if both look VERY VERY VERY impressive right before the big rematch. Plus, it helps build the Mayweather Sr. training him storyline. If De La Hoya looks real good, it's like he made him into a better fighter than he's ever been to the casual fan. Meanwhile, Floyd can get ANOTHER stoppage, making it two in a row. It helps everyone.
Remember, it's free, so he has to go for the sure win, and the lesser name. It's what everyone does. The wait sucks, but at the same time, the year is still VERY young. I find id admirable that a guy in De La Hoya's position is hoping to fight THREE times this year.
It's just his choice of an opponent makes me a bit frustrated. This whole situation does and it's entirely Oscar's fault, imo.
but what does it matter if he's still having a meaningful fight? This is what's happening right now which is ridiculous.
A fighter announces that they will be taking a tough fight and the date of the fight. A fight with a real contender.
Then the fighter announces he will be having a tune up with a scrub.
Now certain fans get upset that he's tune up with a scrub.
But fail to realize that THERE IS STILL MEANINGFUL FIGHT AFTER THE TUNE UP! Ha. So its like yall are saying, "why does he need a tune up. He should just go straight to fight". Ummmm, what? Really? So to you it doesnt matter whether you get to see him spar live? Its ridiculous.
.....And so would Mayweather.
Yes he would, which is why he's doing it.
again, I ask. How is anyone going to complain about watching A FREE FIGHT!
I'm not really complaning, but they should just cut the bullshit and get on with it. Besides I have no problem with watching a free fight. It's just his choice of an opponent makes me a bit frustrated. This whole situation does and it's entirely Oscar's fault, imo.

Seriously, if it's essentially free (if you have HBO anyway), it can be exhibition. The hell are you complaining about? Don't like it, don't watch.
Against a Jr.Welterweight that isn't his size at all. Oscar is really pissing me off. He constantly holds back the best from fighting the best if he can somehow fight the best insted.
And it's not Mayweather's fault. If Cotto was in the same sitaution, he'd do the same thing.

If he fights a Jr. Welterweight, he should go down to 147 and then just stay there to fight Floyd. It's more fair and actually makes the bout somewhat more interesting because it counts as a title defense.

Floyd is the one that made the fight in September. He insisted that he needed a bit of a layoff before he fought again and Oscar decided he didn't want to wait around that long to face Floyd.
