JOE CALZAGHE has snubbed Roy Jones’ offer of a showdown.
Super-middleweight champ Calzaghe steps up to light-heavy when he meets Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas in April.
But his trainer dad Enzo reckons any fight against Jones, who faces Felix Trinidad at New York’s Madison Square Garden tonight in a light-heavy bout, is a non-starter.
One-time great Trinidad, 35, has lost two of his last four bouts. Jones, 39, has been battered in three of his last five.
Calzaghe senior said: “The fight between Jones and Trinidad might have happened years ago when both were in their prime.
“They have both been magnificent servants of the sport, Jones a four division champ and ‘Tito’ a three division champ.
“While now they are finally matched up, the big question is whether they are washed up.
“As for Jones fighting Joe, I can’t see that happening. With Joe at the top, all these people are hovering around him like moths around a flame.
“Unless Joe takes a very, very big step backwards, him and Jones is a non-starter.”
Calzaghe added: “Jones is my favourite to take care of Trinidad who does not belong in the light-heavyweights after moving up from the welters.”

My point has always been that 6-7 years ago Jones was the darling of HBO and both him and Hopkins were dripping in belts, Calzaghe should have gone to them, even based himself in the states for a couple of fights to get exposure a'la Hatton instead of fighting some of the complete nobodys he did around that time. I mean no disrespect to those opponents!
Watch your mouth. Who the fuck are YOU calling moron? If you can't debate politely, don't do it.
I'm well aware you said "from scratch", I just wanted to know what you knew of Enzo, that's all. I mean, I'd hate to think that you're a loud mouthed know-all who actually knows jack shit about the subjects he talks about.
Enzo has bought Joe up from scratch, his other fighters were pros before he got them though he seems to have polished them up just a bit
Can you link me to interviews where Joe said he wouldn't fight in the US? Thanks.
You know as well as i do JC didnt exactly break his bollocks in trying to get over there, do you think Warren would of had that? Hatton fires Warren gets mayweather...can you see where im going. Cant give you links as im almost totally computer illiterate, can you link me up?
I assume you've read all the interviews as to why these fights didn't take place before? Including the American Executive who said that Hopkins agreed to the fight five years ago but then backed out at the last minute? (The Ring, current issue).
Hopkins and Jones made tough demands yet they did that with everybody. I keep using Hatton as an example, he wanted to face the best so he dumped Warren and went after him despite being a bigger draw in his hometown than he was in the u.s.
Hopkins still has SOMETHING, Roy Jones is shot to fuck. But it's the Yank stans that refuse to accept it.
They're both WAY past they're sell by, its just funny how Calzaghe has packed his bags and travel now, when they're old and defeated and not 6-7 years ago
This is why Calzaghe will never be consdered p4p nothjing let alone a great. He wants a paper record with Bernard on it. He's getting it but in my book this interview will always come to mind when talking about Calzaghe. Complete hypocrit, he has lost a fan. I mean, fighting 43 year old Bernard Hopkins isn't a non-starter? A 39 year old is. Nice.
Spot on, its blatant hypocrisy but the Calzaghe 'stans' refuse to accept it
??
Roy can't fight for 12 rounds anymore (except against bums), Calzaghe will be the busier there too.
aight bro. i got not hate for u or yer UK boys.. but i truly think Roy is toughest opponont for joe at the moment.. it dont make me right.. its just wut I think..

if you think Hopkins was BEAT you must be stupid...
Is'nt that what the results were? it may have been close but Hopkins didnt manage to get on top of Taylor significantly over 24 rounds
Usual suspects getting their pants down over Calzaghe fighting a 43 yr old whos been beaten twice by Taylor. Neither Jones or Hop is as attractive as it would of been 6-7 years ago, its a shame Joe has waited until they are both old and defeated to finally pack his bags and go after them, what a joke.
