"Shane Mosley is not a retired fighter," stated Schaefer, "I actually talked to him yesterday; he called me and he does want to continue fighting if the right fight presents itself. One of two names which he mentioned to me, of course, is Mayweather, and a rematch with Miguel Cotto. So I will be talking to Bob Arum today on some thoughts and ideas I had and we'll see when Shane Mosley's going to be back.
Richard Shaefer, GBP
I say 70-30 it happens. ^
Not only do I think Cotto will not stop any of those 3 but I think those will be good matches for him, tough fights. After 3 or 4 more fights I can see Cotto having trouble making 47, we've seen what a drained Cotto looks like, he might have to move up, he's getting too bulky.
I'm with you on that, G. These fights should be pretty tough.
Cotto is a powerhouse and he keeps filling out. He was clearly stronger than even Shane Mosley!
He had Shane trying to box out of desperation. That's telling. :?!:
I actually think he has a very good chance to KO. Gomez would be the underdog, a win over Cotto would turn his WHOLE career around. This man will come for the kill. And let's be real, if he decides to engage Miguel in short-range fighting, he's going down. I believe the same applies to both Clottey and Margarito, these guys are just straight up fighters, no boxing or looking pretty kinda guys. And I mean... I just think that Cotto is better at applying pressure and bending people to his will than any of them...his record talks for itself.
Could be, no doubt about that.
That's an interesting angle that has some serious merit. A brilliant invention if this is your handi-work, Toincito. Although, chances are slim that Miguel will be able to KO even Gomez, let alone Clottey or Margarito.
The Margarito fight will be decent, but dangerous. Very.

Goddamn Addison. Why does your shit always make sense?
Anyways, for Miguel, Mosley is the past, im sure he would fight him if there were NO other options, but I was talking with Joey, his assistant, the other day, and they want him to take 2-3 easy fights, the kind of fights where he destroys people the way he did Quintana. They believe that Cotto needs more knockouts in his resume, thats why Gomez, Marg, and possibly end of the year Clottey. But they dont want any nobodys, they want at least names people recognize. A fight with margo will earn him 5-6 mill, and thats good in his book trust me.

I'm not sure why, but that came off as pretty funny.
I totally agree with what you're saying. But the Cotto fans that are already onboard aren't the folks that Top Rank are concerned with. It's the other potential fans they want to bring into the fold. Fighting "nobody's" won't do shit for Miguel's profile.
Will Top Rank let Cotto fight Cintron? It doesn't look that way.. And again, if Miguel somehow loses to any ^ of these guys it could be extremely damaging to his career. Losing to Shane Mosley after already beating him once does no damage, at all. Just look at Marquez and Vazquez, Barrera and Morales. These things are good for everyone involved.
Fighting Mosley (in a worst case scenario should he lose the second fight) twice this year would be big money, and continued big exposure for Miguel.
Let's say he fights Mosley again wins and moves on, or loses and fights Shane again at the end of the year and comes out with the 2-1 margin. That's a good fucking year in terms of profile and finances.
Miguel wants to fight the "big names" because he wants to get on that A-list and stay there. Fighting Cintron or someone like that does not serve that aim.
Like Miguel said; business is business, and he wouldn't have mentioned fighting Mosley again unless he understood it would be damn good business.

Yeah Addison, i understand your points. But honestly, a rematch is not what we Cotto fans want to see. If a rematch happens, it will most likely be the same outcome although Mosley could win by points... Mosley is an all time great, sure, but we want to see Cotto beat the shit out of other guys since Floyd wont fight him. A Cotto-Cintron fight would be beautiful, judging from Cintrons last fight, Cotto is going to own him. A marg, i mean...marg is good...but hes overrated, hasnt really beaten any proven champion with big names, unlike Cotto, and his style to me is just perfect for a can o whoop ass from Cotto. Hes not a sneeze, but he wont be a favorite. Paul williams is not a welterweight, has not beaten any relevants elite unlike Cotto either, and has not earned his shot yet..he need 2-3 more fights to deserve a fight with Cotto. Gomez is just the only, besides his wba mandatory yuriv, that can be put in front of him atm. I would absolutely love he faced Judah again, cuz i find it entertaining seeing zab losing all the time, but nobody wants to see that neways. lets see what happens . . .

Mosley's goal is a title and a super fight with Mayweather. Even though I think he knows that fight could have gone either way he also is probably smart enough to realize Cintron is available and imo an easy mark for a title. This would be a much easier way to grab a title and set himself up for a mayweather clash. Of Course he hates to lose and loves rematches.
Touché , good points here. ^
I see what you're saying and I agree that a loss to Mosley would not be any where nearly as crippling to his stock as say, a loss to Gomez. I just don't think Shane is a guaranteed win for him, and yeah, he could avenge the loss in a rematch, but that would mean waiting that much longer for a big payday against say Floyd.
If I were Cotto, I would go after someone like Cintron, who has a questionable chin and can't fight on the inside. And he could pick up another trinket before someone else takes it away from Kermit.
True, but the people making the decisions haven't always shown undying faith in Cotto. Is Mosley more dangerous than Margarito, Clottey, or even Gomez at this point? Maybe, maybe not.
At least they know with absolute certainty that Cotto can beat Mosley. I'll tell you what would be dumb; losing to a lesser known opponent for millions less on HBO's regular programming and not a PPV blowout.
Beating Mosley again more convincingly would raise Cotto's stock. There are a healthy number of people who believe Mosley won, and an even healthier number who believe the first fight was a draw. Miguel Cotto is still getting less respect somewhere in there between the lines. People are quick to say that Clottey would beat him, or that Margarito or Cintron would beat him. If he had blown Mosley out of the water I don't think we would be hearing this sort of innuendo.
Even if Cotto somehow lost to Mosley he still has that win against him. A rubber match would be big money, and would come without shame. No matter what, in the end losing to Shane Mosley is better than losing to a fighter the general public has never even heard of. And Cotto would not be favored to lose. No how.
very good points.
Toincito, fighting Mosley again is exactly the right move in terms of profile, finances.. Basically, risk vs. reward. Why the fuck would he fight Gomez or Clottey if he can get Mosley? Miguel has mentioned wanting to fight Mayweather, De La Hoya, Hatton, and Mosley. BIG name opponents.
I'm not saying it's impossible or unlikely he will go forward with Gomez - but Shane has just now presented himself, so I say there's a very good possibilty it happens. We have to put these things in the proper order.
As I've said before; even if Cotto lost to Mosley in a rematch (which is more doubtful now than it was in November), Miguel can get a third fight without losing face. Losing to someone like Margarito or Clottey would be bad. Business is business.

This would be a dumb fight for Cotto to take IMO. He didn't exactly blow Mosley out of the water in the first fight, and beating him again isn't going to raise his stock any more.

Mosley and Cotto are really good friends now. Its not happening. Plus Addison u mentioned that he should stay focused on the top tier fighters like oscar, floyd, and...mosley? cotto is the second best WW after floyd. floyd wont fight him, no wont oscar obviously, so he has to do something...
besides, this new pbf-oscar is a joke. i lost all respect for oscar after knowing hes a drag. floyd would have fought mosley had he beaten cotto.
Uh, yep. Mosley is still one of the biggest names in the sport. Top tier.
