They should have fought back in 2002 when both where undisputed champs in their weight class (Light H , Middle W)
It would have been a big pay day for both so i'm just not sure why it din't happen other than neither wanted to risk their rep.
Anyone who thinks Bernard Hopkins was in his prime when he faced Roy Jones is totally wrong.
Hopkins spent years in prison and started his career late. He had been an active pro for 3 years when he faced Roy Jones and had not faced any worthy opposition.
If you've actually seen that fight you will notice that the style Hopkins' uses in that fight is nothing like the style he used to become a MW great.
When Jones had that fight with Hopkins a lot of critics actually started thinking Jones was a fraud because Hopkins gave him trouble and went the distance in that fight.
I don't count that match as a great career-defining win for Roy jones.
And I thought it was Roy Jones who wanted 60/40 to kick his ass not Hopkins.
RJJ won that fight with 1 hand.
"hurt the right, beat him with the left, Y'all Must've forgot!"
It seems they took down the fight on youtube...I cannot find it anymore.
Anyway:
Roy Jones jr vs Bernard Hopkins Fued 50/50 split
Let us break down the b.s. from Hopkins.
Hopkins lost the first fight, yet he doesn't want to give Roy the bigger purse, despite being #1 P4P, Light-heavyweight Champion (which is better than middle), and is the bigger superstar. Hopkins couldn't even sell out in his home-town/Philly.
Hopkins said Roy didn't want him to fight Tito because he {Roy} wanted any "easy fight" against Tito. Hmmmm, does that mean Hopkins just fought an easy fight?
Hopkins wants a catch-weight, yet he started at LH and I'll say it again, FUCK catch-weights. Fight a man at their best, their healthy weight instead of wanting to fight a drained fighter. Did Sugar Ray Robinson ask fighters to meet him at a "catch-weight"? NO. Did Roy ask Ruiz to meet him at a catch-weight? NO.
60/40 "I'll kick yo ass" was a good deal for the fans, but maybe not Hopkins since he was going to lose again and only collect 40%.
Thank you, there is it is once again, seriously, hopkins is a bitch for talking shit like that, when jones said 60/40, he could hardly speak anymore, it was hilarious. if he actually thought he could win he would have taken the fight, but as jones said, he beat one fighter, then thought he was ready for roy jones, hopkins knew the score, at 175 he'd get his ass handed back to him on a silver platter.

Hopkins never wanted to fight Roy again, he couldn't win. If I recall correctly, wasn't this also the fight Roy had an injured hand?
If Hopkins didn't look good it was because of Roy and vice-versa. It's hard to look good against Hopkins, the man has a solid defense.
Hopkins was fighting in jail and was the boxing Champion, in a Philadelphia jail so let us not get to carried away thinking he was rusting away fighting nobodies.
roy jones is da man !!!
hopkins calls out everyone but never fights them. he called out toney
then that didn't happen either ...
My best friend told me about this one, apparently toney was dead set on fighting him, but hopkins was making shitty excuses about making weight, which was a good thing, cos a fully fit toney would have hurt hopkins at 160 or 168, toney in his prime had disgusting two handed power as well as being seriously evasive.
The fight didnt happen again because hopkins did everything he could to not fight roy jones again. Askin for 50/50 after already losing to jones was the final straw, that looked like flat out ducking to me, if you ever saw hopkins face when jones offered to do it for 60/40 it was a picture, hopkins didnt want none, and he still doesnt want none till this day.
B Hop is 4yrs older than RJ now & he was 4 yrs older when they fought. B Hop was 29 & RJ was like 25/26. So they already fought when they were in their prime & RJ was the clear winner.
i agree they were close to they're primes when they fought. the fight wasnt boring though they did cancel eachother out a bit.
I know Hopkins has an ego and he would've made more money against Jones even if he took that 60/40 offer, but it's still not ducking if you don't agree to fight a guy 2 weight classes above you.
No one would've called Mayweather a ducker if he hadn't fought Oscar De La Hoya.
But how can people say he DUCKED a light heavyweight Roy Jones when he was offered LESS money to fight a BIGGER guy.
Sure some people might think Bernard is a natural light heavyweight or something and because of that he should fight at that division but to me, it doesn't make any sense.
Floyd took LESS money to fight a BIGGER guy because the BIGGER guy was a BIGGER name. Roy is a bigger name than Hopkins, period. Bigger name= larger share of the purse.
The fact that he believed he was even money with RJJ at the time is asinine in itself. He is just like Winky when it comes to assessing their own popularity.

If Hopkins is bigger/as big as Roy Jones, shouldn't Jones himself be able to make 160 like Hopkins did.
No he can't and because of that Jones is bigger, he was a natural LHW by then and could only make 160 when he was younger.
Bernard is taller but he is lanky unlike Jones.

hopkins was probably in his prime in the late 90s. he's adapted well to his age because he's so smart and trains like a machine.
The best he's ever looked were against Glen Johnson in 1997 and Tito in 2001.
Nards good but i'd think Roy would Win from 1993 ( when they fought ) and 2003 ( when he went up to heavy, lost his reflexes ) anything from 03 to present day and Hopkins takes it

I'm actually shocked the Bernard didn't take 60/40, considering it wouldn't have been his titles at stake, and you know he wanted to redeem that loss.
That's called "Calling and ducking", in my book.
He did that just so he could say that he had called Roy out. Kinda like Mosely only calling Floyd out once he had taken other fights.
Bernard thought he was more of a name than he actually was when the fight was made. "60/40 I'll kick your ass."
60.40 I'll tear that ass UP!
Lol.. I remember that specific interview being the one that made me dislike Bernard. He was so arrogant for a guy who had lost to Roy and was in a divison that Roy had dominated before vacating.
