Alright so I am supposed to be taking a brief vacation at the 'please have a good time station' but I decided to comeback really quick and post this.
After the Humberto Soto v. Joan Guzman fight I heard a lot of talk about Guzman ran the whole fight, and though he did move around a lot it was effective movement getting out the corner or back into the middle of the ring to trade and was not running... Y'all had me thinking he was doing some Corry Spinks or Mayweather type shit.
I was expecting the fight to be boring and dull but it wasn't. Of course it wasn't Guzman's best performance but really good considering he hadn't fought in about a year, was an entertaining fight and it was way better then the last time out when he fought Antonio Davis.
Guzman did start to run at the 10th though, he had taken Soto's confidence away from him and knew he had the fight won, Of course this doesn't merit running and I am disappointed in those last three rounds but he dominated the whole fight despite his inactivity.
Really I think all the talk was mostly sour grapes from all the people talking shit about how Guzman was gonna be exposed and the Pinoy's who view him as a threat to Pacquiao..
Anyway here is the fight,
watch it before it gets taken down and you be the judge for yourself:
rounds 1-2
rounds 3-4
rounds 5-6
I just did. I don't listen to what the announcer say, until after I watch the fight on mute, that way I don't have any bias towards what the announcers are saying. Thats the most fair way to watch the fight. Look at round 1 through 3. And tell me that Guzman won all 3 of those rounds. No way he did, if anything Soto won all three of those rounds. Thats how most of the fight went. When Soto was connecting whether it be big shots or small brushing shots, they don't acknologe any of it, they only acknoledgle Guzman boxing beautifully even when hes getting hit alot of the times. Well to each his own.
What fight were you scoring? Soto only connected when he threw his body shots (borderline low blows) most of everything else was (partially or fully) blocked, parried, and slipped. Soto's body language tells the whole story, he never stopped trying, but could never take control of the fight or land clean punches. This makes me think you probably scored both Pacquiao-Marquez fights 9 rounds to 3 at the very least for Pacquiao.
I was ringside for this bout and a heavy supporter of Soto. I had seen the way he beat down Rocky Juarez and had been calling on Pacquiao/Barrera to fight him ever since. To make matters worse, I drove to AC with a staunch Guzman supporter. I couldn't wait to shut his mouth. Needless to say, I was shocked. Guzman did an absolute number on Soto. And TV cameras cant explain how much of a beaten fighter Humberto was that night. He had nothing but superlatives for Guzman that night. I did as well.
Nuff said
Look, I hate compubox and I criticize them as much as the next boxing fan because people use it as an arguement as to who won a fight, which obviously two guys clicking a button isn't very scientific.
But this stat (+/-) is interesting - obviously the numbers can be off or whatever but it should give a general idea of something specific here. I mean for example if you track the compubox numbers over mayweathers entire career he will always have an extremely high +/- score. Ok? He lands high percentage of his shots, while opponent lands low percentage. Same with Guzman. Bernard hopkins is another example. So that's my point bringing up otherwise pointless stats. These types of fighters are accurate with their punches and have exceptional defense.
On a side note, compubox should count these punches after the fight happened on video and in slow motion, rather then do it live. That would make a whole lot more sense as well as be much more accurate.
Agreed wholeheartedly.
Here are the punch stats for Guzman vs Soto:
According to CompuBox, Guzman landed 302 of 686 punches (44 percent) while Mexico's Soto, 27, connected on 192 of 888 blows (22 percent).
The plus/minus rating for Guzman is really high, not just in this fight but all of his fights. He's in the top 10 as far as best plus/minus stats go.
It's really sad to see what CompuBox has done to boxing. It's an opinion, keep that in mind. CompuBox is two men sitting ringside counting - and they're wrong half the time. Anybody who sits near them will tell you the same thing.
Boxing was just fine without it. In the meantime, it's a horrible, horrible measure of what's going on in the ring. Count a few rounds for yourself and compare - especially in controversial fights. You'll be surprised at the results.

whats up with the punch stat numbers, Soto landed more than Guzman did. This fight to me could have gone either way. Guzmans face tells the story with his face all swelled up and Soto is still clean. Soto did way more damage than Guzman. Luckily for Guzman, he has a very strong chin so even though Soto lands on it, Guzman barely moves his head and the announcers think Soto missed. Either way, fight could have gone either way. Stupid announcers saying that Guzman had won all 3 of the first rounds, when Soto was clearly getting the best of the exchanges and landing more on the first three rounds.
Keep bumping this. Doubt very much half of this forum has even seen Guzman fight before. And this is coming off a long layoff.
I had the Agapito Sanchez fight, the Fabio Oliva, Jaedang fight, Antonio Davis, Soto and a couple other fights up for download for anyone who wanted them back then but the file hosting place MediaFire deleted them and I lost all of them :(
GUZMAN is a threat for every1 in th super feather and lightweight... He fights like floyd mayweather... You just cant hit him, I say he beats PAC-MAN.. UD.
He may use the Philly Shell but he fights nothing like Mayweather. He throws more punches, more combinations and is a lot more agressive and likes to slug a lot staying in the pocket which also leaves him open to punches. He doesn't have the skill level or talent of Mayweather but his hands are faster and he's like a controlled rampage who fights in flurries and spurts... one minute he is sitting there just blocking shots or boxing.. the next he is trading blow for blow in the middle of the ring.
