...HBO’s research revealed that the recent Joe Calzaghe-Mikkell Kessler 168 lb. unification bout was the lowest rated HBO Championship Boxing card in history with a 2.8 rating....
:?!: :?!: :?!: :?!:
If it hadn't been a unification bout, it would have been a Boxing After Dark. That's what at least one previous Calzaghe fight (and I believe Kessler vs. Andrade) had been. Then the 2.8 wouldn't have been such a low rating.
It comes with Calzaghe & Kessler both being foreign and only having had a handful of fights televised in the US.
Plus, they're super middleweights. The casual fan can't name anyone who fights at 168. They'd be lucky to come up with a few pound-4-pound names, but Calzaghe hasn't fought a big-name opponent yet to American audiences (unless Showtime subscribers followed Jeff Lacy).
This isn't that big of a story and if Calzaghe beats Hopkins, his next defense will be much higher rated if not a pay-per-view

Lol @ at the people attempting to convince me that Calzaghe was a major draw in america and deserved the same money as hopkins.
Now people know why calzaghe isnt PPV, good fighter no doubt, but not a draw in america if the original thread post is to be believed.
Well, he is getting the same money as Hopkins so lol all you like.
I wish all fans were like you.
So do I mate, I wanted Hatton to beat Mayweather but when he never I wasn't bitter about it.
It sickened me when I heard fools in the audience boo Mayweather after he had won, the two lads I watched it with were ex boxers and they both said "FFS those daft bastards know fuck all about boxing, Floyd's proved himself they should all be giving him a cheer"
give me cal kessler anyday rather than b-hop winky
but i think to any real boxing fan calzaghe vs kessler was a fight worth whatching american or european
No doubt. That's what makes this surprising and disappointing.
Alot of people missed out on some world class Boxing.
lol i'm white and British but I wanted Tyson to beat Bruno in both of their fights, I wanted Tyson to beat Lewis too.
Everyone I know was wanting Tyson to lose those fights , when they asked why I was rooting for Tyson I said because I'm a massive Tyson fan.
I like Bruno, not keen on Lewis but when it comes down to it I want my favourites to win regardless of their race or culture.

I have quite a few white friends. Incase the cops come by and most of them are into boxing. The ones that are, actually rooted FOR Mayweather. One, being a casual fan, even said, "Oh, he's British. Ehh. I want Mayweather to lose but not to this guy. I don't like them."
Now, this says a lot for my prejudice selection of friends. Nonetheless, it speaks volumes, I believe, for the average WHITE American.

Nah.. he's a polo-wearing, hipster actually. I hang with him because when I used to slang bud, his friends always had the price I wanted. Whitest guy I know, when I think about it.
I was kidding. All respect to your friend.
There's alot of that as well. I believe we call them "wiggers."

the average fan here believes he has built his sparkling record fighting nobodies at home.
Mitchell, Brewer, Lacy & Kessler are not nobodies, at the time he fought them they were considered dangerous live opponents, all ex or current world champions. He came through and beat them all emphatically.
And even against these other nobodies as you call them, and I agree there have been some, Thornberry, Starie and Kid Fire Mckintyre to name a few...history has taught us its easy to lose these kind of fights just look back at Tyson vs Buster, Roy Jones vs Montell Griffin, Lewis vs Rahman, the list goes on.
To not do that for over 10 years, and keep fighting through spells when your hand is broken and wrist feels likes it going to snap takes a very special fighter.
He deserves a lot more respect than the "average fan" in America gives him. It seems the only way he could've gotten that respect was by fightin Bernard and Roy Jones 5 years ago......I think it would have been a close fight with both, definitely RJJ who was simply awesome, but they ducked him, what could he do about that!
The "average fan" including yourself seems to be ignorant to any fighter, fighting outside of the USA and thats nothin to be proud about.
Hahaha, seriously though if it was a fight between two Europeans who had fought in America against top American names and won in style would people be more interested in it ??
Of course - the more you're "visible" in a region, the more interest you have. But then the interest in other markets would be less. Calzaghe wasn't exactly a household name in the UK until he started having fights on terrestrial TV. Swings and roundabouts.

no, i pointed out established communities by culture. Guzman is a black latin, that doesnt mean a shitload of mexicans are going to turn out to his fights. Its about culture and where youre from more than it is about race
Fair enough, but race does play an overwhelming factor. This is America after all. Whites are as racially concious (and self concious) as they have ever been, at this particular time in history.
Honestly, more people in the US care about what color your skin is than where you're from.

Ah, but it is about race. You have said it yourself.

now right there you have it right, UFC with its music, themes, even their sponsers, its very much aimed at white males/18-30. I mean basically they almost always have events that feature a white fighter. With all the heavy metal, and horror movie sponsers/slasher film sponsers and all this other high octane shit they pack in those shows, you know the demographic they are going for.
I totally agree.
