It Mayweather uses his jab, and follows his lead right with the left hook, and throws more than one puch at a time he will win, but he needs to do this from the start. Mayweather is faster and longer than cotto, and if he uses combinations he will win a decision, or maybe a late round ko, but if he throw one punch at a time, Cotto, will pummel him into the ropes, and make him his bitch
...if...
... he does what he always does!!! this fight would be a tough but convincing win for Mayweather... i am a cotto fan ( eventhough i felt the cotto vs. mosely was a DRAW!!! ) i feel that puttin pressure on mayweather is simply not the KEY!!! i feel that the key is BOXING HIM from a distance using an effective and consistent/accurate jab and one-two combination MACHINE!!!
cotto fights with a high guard that would prevent that lead right that FMJ likes to land.
I got a little bored so here is my breakdown of this fight if it happens:
I would like a little more reality based conversation if and when this fight takes place as to how it may play out, Both of these guys have proven they are elites, Mayweather has just moved thru several weight classes and is probably at the end of a career while Cotto is beginning to peak.
For Floyd to have effective offense against Cotto he will have to counterpuch more and throw in combination. Cotto's high guard and jab will prevent him from using his pot shotting back tracking style. That also means he will have to be prepared to get hit hard and often in return.
Floyd does not punch as hard as Zab, he does not punch as hard SSM nor is he as strong physically as Mosley so he will have some difficulty with Cotto's strength and effective inside fighting. If they dont fight in Vegas with 10 oz gloves it will be very challenging for him to not take a lot of punishment on the inside.
FMJ will have to find a way to wear Cotto down with precise punching and as he usually does move in a manner to frustrate him letting him wear himself down. Floyd does this really well and it is a very important part of his attack. Opponents seem to think that since Floyd is letting them pursue that he is vulnerable. Usually he is letting them shoot their load and saving his energies while studying them for attacking opportunities. I dont see this working for him with Cotto. Cotto is a very relaxed fighter, have you ever seen Cotto wear down whether it involved pursuing an opponent or grappling and inside fighting? He also fights within himself and doesnt try to force things.
Cotto's big weapon tho is his jab and the fact that he is a Strong Southpaw fighting from the orthodox. His jab is punishing and very quick and will be a big factor. On the inside Mayweather likes to lay his head on the left side of his opponents, watch tape and you'll see this. This is usually effective as most guys try to wing rights or square up to get off their hooks but Cotto gets a lot of work done on the inside with his left, uppercuts, hooks, brawling and mawling. Mayweather will have to figure out a way to position his body so he isnt taking damage from Cotto when they are grappling inside all while dealing with a guy who has a big strength advantage.
This is probably why Mayweather is content to wait until the money is there for him to take on such a risk. Unfortunately for Floyd I think he will quickly come to realize that Cotto is his last big cash cow and if he wants to fight again that is who he will have to face. The other alternative is Mosley who I thought looked very good against Cotto or Williams. Mosley may bring him close to the same money but Williams def will not.
Great post.
Mayweather will tag Cotto with that lead Right hand all night long. I will double up as soon as the fight is signed and over with. Just hope enough Cotto fans can wager with me.

its true but you will get flamed, cotto is the perfect fighter to beat mayweather, until he loses of coarse.
That is literally the story of EVERY fighter that has faced Floyd recently.

I actually think the only way Floyd could beat him is sticking and moving for 12 rounds straight. Cotto can take MM's punches, so throwing combinations will make Mayweather stationary for just enough time for Cotto to brawl with him and bully him against the ropes. MM's height advantage is only 1 1/2 inch, his arms are a little longer though, but I don't think that will be a significant factor seeing as SSM was taller and had unusually long arms and couldnt use them to his advantage.
You just know these 2 are going to hook up. For the record I got Money May by UD. People act like Floyd cant take a punch or something. If anyones chin is suspect its Cottos.

he was hurt by judah and would have lost if not for throwing two low blows. how are you so sure he could take mayweathers power shots?
he doesn't have to be stationary to throw combos, look at Duran vs. Leonard II, leonard flurried while fighting at angles and getting out of the way, Floyd is athletic enough to do the same
but Mayweather is faster than SSM, and SSM fought a very close fight with Cotto
I was replying to your comment about armlenght and height. SSM didn't just win because of his speed, he's the full package. Cotto has fought fast fighters, take Malinaggi for example who I believe is on par with MM speedwise.
Mayweather again will be stationary if he throws combos. Bernard Hopkins said right here on boxingscene that if Cotto runs through those shots and fires back he'll be succesful against MM. If he sticks and moves, Cotto will have to chase him. MM isn't powerful enough to be effective with combinations, he needs to win this fight on points without being hit too often.
i do agree that he cant just stand an trade, but if he hits cotto with 3 and 4 punch combos and then moves he will have more success as opposed to pop shottin him then runnin
