This article states there there are negotiations in place to have Miguel Cotto fight Oscar De La Hoya on the 3rd of May in Los Angeles. I think it's going to happen, it does not speak of what venue or weight class though. They must be in the very early stages of negotiations, none the less some coordination is being done.

Oscar will lose and lose badly he cannot absorb body punches, and Cotto will tear his body up. By the 8th round DLH will be completely out of gas and Cotto will finish him soon after. But hay i say make it happen this will bring FLoyd up to fight Cotto.
Unlikely, Oscar will catch Cotto coming in. Oscar will do him like he did Vargas.

That's what I say, however, there are a lot of Oscar haters on here who don't want to see Cotto risk his undefeated record against Oscar. If he's the truth, he beats Oscar and is a definate threat to Floyd. If he loses then he would have lost to Floyd as well. Let him have Oscar and we'll see what happens.
I ain't scared of seeing Cotto losing his 0, not saying YOU accused me of that but I'm just not afraid of it, I'm confident enough in Cotto's abilities to beat Oscar, Floyd and Williams back to back, I think Cotto can beat all 3(maybe not back to back, don't blame that comment on me blame it on the Vodka lolz), I just think Cotto is in a position where he can face the manditory challenger, an undefeated guy who seems like he's pretty good, then aim for a chance to unify the belts not have to fight someone like Oscar who brings nothing to the table but a name on his record and no gold, if Cotto can unify from Williams and bring the COMPLETE unification to Floyd then we have a ground breaking fight on our hands, Floyd will JUMP at a chance to unify then retire as undisputed Welterweight champion, if Cotto can eliminate Williams and stop all the Floyd ducking Williams talk the way Cotto did with Shane IMAGINE how fast Floyd will jump at Cotto, because then he can unify by taking on a lighter challenge but guess what? Floyd will LOSE that fight.. bottom line regardless of what occurs there is NO room for Oscar, he brings nothing but money to the table while the other guys bring championships, Cotto is already a Millionaire and a fight with Floyd will bring in MORE millions than a fight with Oscar, mark my words it WILL, Oscar needed Floyd, he needed Floyd to bring out his name as a legit threat, someone who still could do something, Oscar was gone with the wind for a while and when Floyd took the fight it gave Oscar the right opponent to bring that whole Golden Boy shit back to lime light, bring him into that whole fierce shit he built his whole career off of and having such a BIG advantage size wise people bought into it, like Oscar could actually beat Floyd, Oscar needed Floyd not the other way around and I could argue for DAYS on this.. damn lemme chill I'm drunker than I thought, this ain't got nothing to do with Floyd this is about Miguel and Oscar and Oscar don't deserve the fight yet, let him beat the shit out of Castillo or Collazo or fuck it even Judah but don't go straight at Cotto, Boxing doesn't need a bully saying "fuck you I'm the golden Boy I could fight whoever I want".. I'm fucking, where the pussy at! 100
I totally agree. I'm sick and tired of Oscar swooping in and trying to get the big fights. He doesnt deserve to fight Cotto. Paul Williams does. You know why? Because hes actually won his last few fights. DLH has lost 3 of his last 5fights and his last win is against Ricardo "the human punching bag" Mayorga.
He needs to take a step back and let the best fight the best.
With that said, DLH fighting Cotto is great for the sport because DLH has a huge following and would help build Cottos fanbase when Cotto knocks DLH's head into the 10th row.
I feel you and I TOO want to see this fight but not when Oscar just grabs his dick and says I'm here now everybody fight me because I'm rich, that shit don't fly with me, you could be Trinidad(my favorite all time fighter) and I will STILL shit on you completely if you coming off a loss to face someone with a MAJOR title, a bullshit one? go ahead, I would actually support that so you don't come empty handed into the fight but a MAJOR one? nah fam.. if Oscar beats a Clottey or a Welterweight like Cintron then hell yea, fuck it beat on castillo if he wants Welterweight fights, I ain't asking for him to take on Shane again of someone who could kill him but shit Oscar fight someone to prove your worth, don't come into the next BIG fight of your life off of a loss.. 100
I wouldn;t mind watching this fight. It would make $$$$$$$.. I wouldn't mind. If Mayweather isn't going to fight then fight De La Hoya.. Or Williams.. One or the other.

Those of you saying Cotto should fight Mayorga and not DLH are not making any sense at all. DLH beat the shit out of Mayo. Oscar is the best fight for Cotto right now. It's a huge fight. Mexican vs Puerto Rican. Former Champ vs Current Champ. Power vs Power. Bob Arum vs Oscar De La Hoya. The winner gets Floyd. I don't know why everyone hates on Oscar. He's bringing the sport back.
Everyone keeps talking about Oscar not deserving this fight and he should step back and what ever. Oscar is not a contender to be stepping back and letting the best fight the best. He only has about a year and a half left in the game. He is an established threat to anybody in the 147 - 154 lbs division. And he's the man everyone wants to fight. Basically, he can pick his fights. This didn't happen by luck. He and his fists had a little to do with this. It can be argued that he beat Floyd, it was that close. So why shouldn't the man who gave Floyd his closest fight get a crack at Miguel. Besides, Oscar will be the biggest test for young Miguel Cotto to date. Who else has Cotto fought, besides Mosley, that comes close to Oscar. It's a good fight, so stop resisting the inevitable.
lol Cause being number 2 isnt enough? Cotto doesn't "have" to do shit but sign the papers. A fight with Oscar when the public is already demanding a bout with Mayweather, thats borderline retarded. It's like Margarito facin Williams when he already had Cotto lined up. It's not as risky as that fight, but a risk nonetheless.
If Cotto loses, thats just 'If'...Mayweather would never fight Cotto and be like "told you he was green" or some shit, and get away scott-free with fightin over hyped fighters, lol fuck that. Cotto should get in Mayweathers chest and be persistant in doing so. Same way Tarver got Jones, cause getting Mayweather to fight a real is like pulling teeth.
Cotto should take Mayorga, then in the later half of 08...Mayweather.
Why would Cotto fight Mayorga instead of DLH?
Less exposure, less money and its a win that basically proves nothing.
I think with Floyd at this stage of his career you kind of have to MAKE him want to fight you, by calling him boring, or beating a top contender more impressivly than he did.
I love Oscar, but he needs to take a step back and let Cotto/Mayweather transpire.
Oscar should seriously think about Paul Williams, I mean at this point in Oscar's career, it's known he'll give you a fight even if he loses a decision. And ontop of that, those lanky arms will grant Oscar more oppertunities then Cotto's short quick power shots.
Floyd is taking at least a year off, so this is the perfect setup to FLoyd v Cotto.
Oscar De La Hoya does not deserve a big fight, when will his fucking name stop qualifying him? he is not in line to face someone who beat a guy who beat someone who whipped HIS ass twice and on top of that Oscar losing his last fight at a higher weight level against a smaller, BETTER guy and losing 3 of his last 5 fights, how does this fucking primadonna get the honor bestowed upon him to face Miguel Cotto? a direct chance at a MAJOR title? I would rather see a Judah rematch because at least he deserves it, he been screaming rematch since the post fight interview and has been winning all of his last few fights but Oscar? get the fuck out of here..

i like Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto and think it would be a very exciting bout BUT i really dont think at this point oscar is in the position to fight the number one contender of the welterweight division.
he's lost several of his last 5 or 7 bouts.
I dont think (beyond his name) he has earned this fight.
Granted a loss to mayweather (That many including myself think he won) doesnt really hurt your record but none the less i dont think he's in the position to have this fight.
The person who has the most to gain in this bout is Miguel Cotto if he wins. It would mean his last 2 of 3 opponents would have been world champions who at one point held a high ranking on the p4p list and would without a doubt sell MANY ppv's with a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. It would almost guarantee him a reputation of a force to be reckoned with currently in boxing and may even earn him a top 7 spot on the p4p list.
If he wins...
If he loses (unfortunately) since oscar is past his prime it would drop his stock greatly and he would NOT be the number 1 contender in the welterweight divison (in my opinion) and it would set things back how they were at the start of 2007; filled with very good competition but WIDE open.
Then floyd's next fight will either:
A) be 8 months to a year from now (to let the division define itself again)
or
B) a fight with a boxer who has an established repuation but past his prime (maybe against a mayorga, or a shane mosley, or even de la hoya again...who knows)
if oscar DOES beat cotto i think mayweather should meet up with pacquiao at a catch weight (its probably the best option if that were to occur) rather than a pacquiao/hatton bout. unless pacquiao uses hatton as a measuring stick to get to floyd.
for the sake of boxing today it would be best if cotto won.
How does a fight with a lightmiddleweight affect his welterweight standings?
I think Oscar has a good chance to KO Cotto which is why I dont want this fight to happen. People will dismiss Cotto if he loses to Oscar which has nothing to do with his ability to put on a great show against Mayweather...
I sence jealousy. He made Mayweather into a ppv mega attraction and his fight with Mayweather could have gone either way. I know a lot of people that saw Mayweather run all night and asked, "how did he win?"
Great fighters always get these oppertunites, he ain't the only fighter in history to do what ever he wants in boxing.
oh boy here we go with the jealousy shit.. I'm not a ranked Welterweight who got pushed aside homie I have NO reason to be 'jealous", I ain't even mad yo I just don't like when someone bypasses the ranks due to a strong rep, if he had emeritus status then aight but c'mon man lets be real here that shit ain't right.. MAYWEATHER turned Mayweather into a PPV attraction, the world awaits wouldn't have been so BIG had Oscar's opponent hadn't been Floyd, I'm sick and tired of people making Floyd out to seem like a product of Oscar when Oscar was just another opponent on his win column, it made for good promotion because they BOTH held weight.. why wasn't Felix Sturm made into a mega star when he chopped up Oscar? because he didn't have the star quality to match Oscar, 2 big mega stars coming together is going to make for a bigger event than just 1 against a no name dude, Floyd played JUST AS MUCH of a part as Oscar did in the world awaits so YOU and everybody else who feels Oscar made Floyd an attraction need to be easy..
I never once denied that shit like that goes on in Boxing and has been going on that way since way back the only thing I'm saying and the undeniable fact here is that IT AIN'T RIGHT, the shit ain't fair to other fighters like Judah and others who are coming off wins to have to step aside for this Ken doll look alike to just bust in after losing yet again in a world class fight, he gets so much leeway for reasons other than the actual sport whether it's his name or his opposition but that shit is WRONG, it's STILL going to happen but it's WRONG..
Oscar De La Hoya does not deserve a big fight, when will his fucking name stop qualifying him? he is not in line to face someone who beat a guy who beat someone who whipped HIS ass twice and on top of that Oscar losing his last fight at a higher weight level against a smaller, BETTER guy and losing 3 of his last 5 fights, how does this fucking primadonna get the honor bestowed upon him to face Miguel Cotto? a direct chance at a MAJOR title? no Oscar NEEDS to fight Cotto cause the ONLY way COTTO-MAYWEATHER is gonna happen is if Cotto makes a name for himself and beats DE LA HOYA.
glad to see that my boy's going to get his biggest payday and biggest win to date, however, beating mosley (amongst the hardcore) will ALWAYS trump beating ODLH. ODLH, obviously, isn't what he used to be.
hopefully he shrinks down to 147 to accomodate cotto - but i don't think he will, or without a big fuss; at 154, this fight becomes more competitive.
either way, can't see how odlh can cope at this juncture, either weight, a win for cotto.
