the thing is also though, Floyds wins were against p4p competition, DLH being in the top 20, and hatton being in the top 10, Taylor and Miranda were outstanding wins, but another thing is, Taylor was not expected to beat pavlik, the general consensus even in his hometown, was that he was getting knocked out, and he was.
thats why this poll is overwhelmingly favored by him, the quality of the opposition coupled with the magnitude of the wins.
I can respect that point of view. I expected Pavlik to beat Taylor because I didn't rate Taylor highly but I thought that the general consensus was that Taylor would be too skilled for Kelly.
Good point about P4P opposition and I don't think you can really overlook the enormity of the events that Mayweather was involved in, but my pick was Pavlik before the Mayweather-Hatton fight and only a Hatton win there would unseat him in my opinion.
I picked Cotto, cause he was the only one who fought 3 times this year. He showed everyone that he is not one-dimentional & is becoming a big name in boxing. Pav is second & Flyod third in my book. Flyod's exposure and big KO win at the end of the year is why he's destroying the numbers in this thread.
Pavlik fought three times also.

are you sure about this?

While Mayweather is clearly the choice... that post is rubbish. Taylor was the betting favorite by a decent amount.
I would have to say pavlik. He knocked out two of the best guys in his division. One of those fights he bounces back for almost getting knocked out himself. That to me shows signs of a determined warrior which should merit a FOY award.
Kelly Pavlik for me the guy lived upto the hype & did what most thought he would do & smashed Taylor to bits in a no nonsence fashion ,previously he also beat up a very dangerous fighter in Miranda who could have caused Pavlik a lot of trouble if Pavlik didnt adopt the right tactics
not to mention the fact it was like a real life Rocky story the underdog from a hard nieghbour hood taking his chance on the biggest stage seizing his opurtunity etc
I think Pavlik had absolutely the most growth this year. Underdog for the Miranda and Taylor fights, he wasnt even in the top ten before this year and now hes undoubtedly the best fighter in the division.
Also, both his fights were slugfests.
On the other hand, Mayweather had easily the biggest two wins weve seen in a single year in a long time. I couldnt name a more accomplished fighter in one year off the top of my head. Throw in the fame of these two fights, and he will get it easily. besides...that knockout was almost legendary. what a way to end the year...
I dunno, personally I think the whole Fighter of the Year award should go to the guy with the top growth and most exciting fights. Like Glen Johnson or Ayala winning the award, even though Im positive there were fighters with better wins in those years.
then again, FOTY is also a popularity contest. I understand completely people that choose Mayweather and have nothing against it. but I give it to PavlikI was thinking about it, and Pavlik's wins are pretty damn good. a good amount of people believed Miranda was robbed against Abraham, not only in points but in that broken jaw. He also had wins over Eastman, an undefeated Allan Green(very good fighter) and an ok win over Gibbs.
and remember, Taylor was a p4p fighter, #10. some people thought that he had lost against Hopkins and Wright, but ya know, a lot of people thought that Hatton lost against Collazo...and Hopkins and Wright were top p4p fighters, who were the absolute best in their division
from not being in the top ten of your division to knocking out p4p fighters is a huge leap.
Because his "year" would be merely based on a revenge bout. A good one at that, but I'd concede that Pavlik's win over Taylor alone was more impressive than Vasquez over a Marquez moving up in weight as a challenger.
Merely? The importance of the Marquez vs Vasquez rivalries were huge!
Of course Rafael Marquez was moving up in weight but so what? As he showed in both fights he was more than able to hold his own and crack Vasquez big.
Kelly Pavlik's win over Taylor is no doubt right up there but you are seriously undermining the accomplishment by Vasquez.
Has to be Pavlik in my opinion, he overcame the odds to win the middleweight title in spectacular fashion, not once, but twice in fights he was supposed to lose. Floyd's fights were ones he was favourite to win, and while he does have a shout at being fighter of the year because of the tremendous publicity and record breaking back to back pay per view earnings I feel that the Fighter of the Year award should focus more on in the ring performance than fiscal gain.

Why are they Floyd boys as opposed to people with a legitimate opinion? dehumanizing by way of petty ad hominem is a classic fallacy. It's ironic that you accuse ANYONE of bias judging from your ridiculously absurd sig with that pre-selected nonsense video clip/gif.
The case for Floyd is stronger, he beat better opponents and both were current champs.
I can concur that Floyd's year was top notch. You can't beat coming out victorious in the TWO biggest fights of the year. Pavlik had a great year as well. I expect Floyd to win but if he didn't it should go to the Ghost.
Like I said... He got TKOed by Rafael Marquez considered by many the hardest punching fighter p4p and a great boxer in a super exciting fight where he dropped Marquez and came back and overcame odds in the rematch to stop him in a brutal war.
You are telling me that doesn't hold any merit in the Fighter of the year rankings?
A lot of the other fighters considered in the list beat other fighters who were already doubted by many and not as established as Marquez... so why not?Because his "year" would be merely based on a revenge bout. A good one at that, but I'd concede that Pavlik's win over Taylor alone was more impressive than Vasquez over a Marquez moving up in weight as a challenger.
Why? He got TKOed earlier this year. Vasquez-Marquez II, fight of the year? Maybe. Either one for "fighter of the year"? Definitely not.

Vasquez should be included.....

Vasquez should be included.... The man came from being savagely busted up by an established P4P champ in the first fight to Knocking him out in the rematch. How can that not have merit.
If Rafael Marquez was a nobody... then it would be understandable for Vasquez not to be included... but thats clearly not the case.
I have to give it to pavlik
he beat 2 good boxers and a great boxer all in spectacular fashion via knockout. All 3 guys had never been knockedout before.
Mayweather is a close second to me.
