Is julio cesar chavez really a legend or just another good fighter, most mexicans say he's a legend but looking at his record its not really impressive and the only fighter he beat was pernell but many say he lost that fight, so where do you place him?
I see now that there has already been some back and forth on Duran_Is_God's post. Just had to jump in and respond before reading the rest of the thread.
chavez is a legend but lets not kid ourselves about the 1st taylor fight. he was being soundly beaten by taylor, and got lucky with a punch in the final 15 seconds. the referee clearly should of allowed taylor to finish the fight. aside from that of course he is a great fighter and deserves to be mentioned alongside the modern greats
I'm not even going to read ahead to see who responded to the above statement. Sure Taylor was leading comfortably on points, but the 12th round knock down in no way came as the result of a lucky punch. Chavez was slower throughout the fight (who wouldn't have been against Taylor?), but JCC landed plenty of hard shots on Meldrick before he finally damaged him enough to drop him. Chavez never stopped trying to win, and because of his pressure Meldrick was spent by the end of the fight. I find it hard to believe that anyone failed to attribute the knockdown to anything but the accumulation of hard shots Meldrick absorbed all night long.
With regard to whether Chavez was an all-time great or not...I won't bother responding to that silliness.

I'll end this quick! theirs alot of threads like this one, but if you guys do your homework and look in to it Chavez was pound 4 pound #1 for a few years and he was top 10 P4p for a long time! SO that should end this question because not just anybody can make it to the top 10 P4p and stay their for as long as he did!:boxing:
Chavez was the LEGITIMATE champ in 3 weight classes....weight classes in which he rates amongst the best ever (though at lightweight, his reign was brief)
Too much emphasis is put, positively & negatively, on his overall record....when it's his record in title fights that amazes.
He is the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.
Few in history went to the body like he did, nor did many put their shots together like he did.
His fight with fellow lb4lber Meldrick Taylor, was the greatest fight of the 90's, as well as one of the finest fought "super fights" in the history of boxing.
He was at or the top of the lb4lb lists for almost a decade.
Chavez defines the word "Legend", IMO.
dam skippy, you got it perfect. what's wrong with this guy? you are asking if chavez sr was a legend? fuckin newbie. his first fight with meldrick taylor cemented him into the meaning of a true legend and is widley known as the best mexican boxer. his losses came later in his career when he was past his prime. hey lil guy mabe you should start buying fighters whole career sets onb dvd. then mabe you can figure out who's a legend, and who is not.
hehehehe...
good post..

nah, not really, he only fought 115 fights with only 6 losses.nah , definitely not a legend..
I think he is what they say he is.
Chavez went 80-0 which is impressive even if they are cab driver or whatever but going that much undeafted take alot of time effort and power to do it.
There are many other hungery fighters around.
but there are forgot legends like Yuri boy Campos not legend but he is even not remeber as a good fighter and Salvador Sanchez which I rank him higher than Chavez

Watch more boxing and notice, when MANY announcers refer to him they say "The Legend", without even mentioning his name. And most boxing followers know who they mean.
So you tell me.....
Hes a legend because of what he was to an entire country, he wasnt just a boxer, he would go on to be regarded to be the best fighter of a country loaded with outstanding talent and champions. Being the best in mexico is pretty tough, and when you had him uniting an entire country behind him, thats off the hook.
i was never a big fan of his, but id be lying if i said what he did wasnt legendary to some regard.
I agree with you on that one .
