To me Paul Williams is a bigger verision of Corrales. Just as Corrales at 147, Paul wouldn't do well at 160lb despite his 6'2 frame. My advice for Paul is to forget about the multi-division champ approach and stay at 147 as long as possible and take the Calzaghe/Hopkins approach, defending his title and possibly setting a new record of title defenses at welterweight.
Because at 147 he is a problem. He has great stamina, a solid chin and a high work rate. You add the height/reach advantage over everybody to that and he is close to unbeatable. Floyd is obviously more skilled but with his punching power almost a non-factor at 147 and his Hopkins-esque increasement of using more defense then offense these days......I don't think he can beat Paul.
It's a lil bit of a combination of what Floyd isn't at 147 (a power puncher, as offensively minded as at 130lb) and what Paul Williams is (as I said in the highlighted part above) that leads me to believe that Floyd doesn't have a shot at even potshoting his way to a decision victory in this one. However his defense is too good to get knocked out.
Paul Williams by a wide Unaminous Decision
Speaking of P.Williams............look what I found.
I was all but ready to endorse Cotto as the best welter as I'm already picking him to beat margarito and the only guy waiting for Mayweather.
However now that The Punisher is back in the mix and Mayweather is "retired" quote on quote......he has some more (proving the doubters like myself wrong) to do.
If paul williams gets mayweather in the ring in other 2 or 3 fights then i can be 100% sure he would beat mayweather, Paul williams has all the advantages at the moment except for experience and in 2 or 3 fights he gets the needed experience to go up against someone like PBF, The man throw and lands too much punches, Had the stamina to sustain it same level of assault all through his fights and has a decent chin.
PBF would definitely counter Williams but the size disadvantage would be too much IMHO.
I agree with the TC. Floyd doesn't have the power to keep Williams in a volume-boxing mode like Margarito did. When Paul sits down and becomes a straight, string-combination puncher, nobody at 147 is even close. He is an offensive hurricane. Floyd would land some nice shots, but his right hand counters wouldn't be enough. You can't beat Paul Williams unless you can hurt him, IMO. Thank God he's so tough. The toughness is the reason I think he beats Cintron and Cotto as well.
Big Pun beats Mayweather by decision.
he would have to be damn near perfect to defeat floyd, which i dont' see happening although i do believ ethat williams would be his toughest foe and i have been claiming this for quite sometime now unlike others on here who every other month seem to believe that such and such would have the best chance to beat floyd. 1st, shane, then hatton, then williams, then cotto, then whoever else. paul williams would be floyd's toughest opponent bar none, yet he would be his toughest fight in a losing effort. floyd knows how to angle himself at the right distance against taller fighters, and as far as paul punching a lot, this would prove dumb against floyd imo because of the way floyd utilizes the ring. paul, unless he has a night of flawless stamina, will tire out trying to hit floyd, who will block many of his punches. take into account, floyd has claimed for many years that in order to be a great defensive/offensive minded fighter, you have to find your distance and he knows distance very well. paul williams would have to fight very smart to beat floyd, and imo paul is a pretty smart fighter and times his punches well even while throwing many, because he is patient. but, paul is great at overwhelming his opponents with hi spunch output because they really don't have any time to react because he is constantly throwing, but floyd is the smartest fighter in boxing and is great at using fighter's timing against them, which he would do with willliams.
You say Floyd knows how to angle himself against taller fighters, but how many people has he fought that were 6'2". Floyd is good at avoiding punches, but can he avoid over 1200 punches in a fight? Floyd is a very good counterpuncher, but it's a little tougher when the guy has a 82 in reach. The scary thing is, Williams is going to get better. Floyd's best chance is to fight him now before he does. I agree with Vlad in that Paul should stay at WW as long as he can. However, since he weighed in at 162 on fight night against Margarito, I can see him making this weight for a couple more years max.
finally a good discussion gooing on about floyd without the biased hate. keep it going fellas:biggthumpno, there's still biased hatred on this thread, just not in your face, but subliminally.
Did you read the orignal post of this thread? I have said that Floyd is the more skilled fighter. Paul is NOT perfect. I actually think Floyd would be an even better fighter once he no longer had to worry about losing the 0.
I think he would decrease his Business man mentality and be more available when other fighters are calling him out.
I Agree, Paul has the best chance of beating flyod if he stays at 147, Cotto has the second best chance. Lets hope both these fights happen, I'd love to hear what mayweather would say if he lost.

floyds bread and butter has always been his counter punching
Not easy counter punching a 6'2 guy with much bigger reach then you who throws 1000 punches during a fight. Naah mean????
willaims also got hit more than floyd did in his win against mitchell

No kidding, and Williams against better overall competition 24 KOs in 33 fights. I agree that Paul would give Floyd problems. It appears that the shoulder roll is not very effective against a southpaw. I don't see Paul knocking him out since the few times Floyd has been hurt, he is great enough defensively to avoid punishment until the stars go away and then come back punching. I think Paul's freakish reach (even for his height), work output and endurance would in the end just be too much for Floyd. Hard to counter a guy with arms about 5 in longer (10 in total reach advantage.) I did notice Williams KOd Sharmba Mitchell in 2 less rounds than Floyd, but since I don't see a KO either way in this fight its probably not that relavent. Paul by UD.
willams also got caught with a lot of right hands by mitchell and he's smaller than floyd
Stop yourself right there. Carlos Baldomir won 43 (KO 13) + lost 11
Nuff said.

yea but he knocked out gatti and had zab hurt. the only person paul williams ever hurt thats worth mentioning is sharmba and the size difference between williams and mitchell is crazy
Stilll Floyd's bread and butter is his defense and has always been. Whatever few shots he has taken so far, he hasn't been hurt. I say he has a decent chin but I wouldn't push it.
To suggest that he wouldn't have to be as defensive against Williams as he was against Baldomir is pure nonsense.
A 6'2 man at 147 can hurt anybody if they don't protect themselfs. But like I said.....Floyd has too good defense to ever let that happen.
floyds bread and butter has always been his counter punching it may look like he is standing there being defensive but most of the time he's waitng for the oppenent so that he can counter their shots and williams throws alot of shots to get countered

Would Mayweather be that stupid to face Cotto or Williams without putting on a little bit of muscle?.
A boxer like Mayweather could put on 10 pounds of lean muscle in a month if he wanted to and work on speed for the next 3-4months then dehydrate .
That would be career suicide at age 30......Just ask Roy Jones jr about that.
Muscle or not muscle.....he wouldn't outmuscle or be strong enough for Cotto or Williams. So that's bad advice from ya.
