Are retired or dead are overrated in general?

Diego Maradona is in no way shape or form better than Pele. Both are still alive by the way. Diego is a retired coke head living in Cuba.

That can work both ways aswell look at Larry Holmes he was very underrated when he was fighting and now he has retired he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. For me Larry Holmes is the best HW ever in terms of boxing style and ability but Ali is consider to be GOAT because mostly of the things that he did outside boxing which help some limelight into the sport. Same with Oscar DHL singing career and looks made more fan into the sport made him bigger than he is. Similar to Beckham, Mayweather tried to do it with Dancing with the Stars but failed as well as Tarver and Vargas.

And the technologies of today that past greats didnt have can greatly help boxers of today. And boxers of today can simply look at archive video and study them and improve on them. There's no other way but to go forward. so technically saying that today boxers are better because they have the knowledge of past boxer as well as mixed into there own. i agree with your theory... but you picked the worst examples possible (except arguably van gogh) how is 2pac overratted? (you must not know about his genre) how is pele overated? you say maradonna was better but they played in different era's.... either way he's top 3 all time... and you said retired also... last time i checked maradonna is retired aswell!!! and jimi hendrix? well i won't even bother... Van Gogh when he was living , lived poor and nobody gave a shit about him intell he was dead. 2pac was a good rapper not my style but his sales of record became better after he was dead. people still think he was alive because of his album releases I not saying that the people in the past are bad but people in the present are constantly compared with the people in the past. Like someone else said, I agree 100% the theory behind your post, and I've brought the same question up to a lot of people I know, but Tupac, Pele and Hendrix are HORRIBLE examples with which to base your argument off of. Each one of them is easily 100% deserving of the lengendary status that they picked up. I concur with this post especially the bold people. I don't even like rock and roll or soccer.

I notice many fighters after they retired couple of year they become hyped alot by fans. it not only boxing even in music and arts dead people are overrated. example 2pac, Van Gogh, Pele, Jimmy Hendrix...etc I could mention more if I want too. in boxing I notice many of the guy who are retired are overrated because people are keeping compare today's fighter with those who are in the past. SRR is the GOAT welterweight who didn't move up to MW until he was 28 and had over a hundred fights already. Even still he fought and beat the best at middleweight, including quite a few great fighters like Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Carmen Basillio, Gene Fulmer, etc. Sure Jones was dominant at middleweight, but what greats did he beat besides Bernard Hopkins? Sugar Ray Robinson is a great fight at MW and stuff but Roy is better IMO he looked unbeatable in the 90s with his speed and quickness. you rarely see someone drop a triple left hook as quick as Jones. How the fuck is Jimi Hendrix over rated? He changed rock and roll and gave it new flavor. He was already a legend in the short time he was an artist and regardless if he was alive or not would still be viewed as the greatest gutarist of all time.. Duran lowblowed so many times that there is a question mark. Aaron Pryor first win against Alexis Argulleo where he took the white stuff nobody knew that. THis will alway be a question mark as well as staying in one wieghtclass and not going after WW elite like SRL,Duran or Hearns.
