I totally understand Calzaghe's motives for fighting Bernard, they are based around US recognition and money which is fair enough. But lets face it who the hell has Bernard beaten to warrant this so called legendary status that he continues to ramble about. Fair dues he made 20 title defences......but Calzaghe has mirrored that.
Yes he has beaten future hall of famers - Trinidad (which he constantly refers to.....how boring) and DelaHohoya but i'm not gonna insult your intelligence by explaining why those victories were not all they were made out to be. So that leaves us with his losses to Jermain Tayler who has been subsequently exposed and wins against a drained and out of shape Antonio Tarver and a blown up light middle in Winky Wringht.
So tell me why Calzaghe needs to prove himself against the so called P4P top 4/5 player in Hopkins who invariable stinks out the joint in all his fights!
The truth of the matter is that American fans have seen his last 5 or so fights and are just starting to give him credit, whilst those of us who have followed him for years knew that he would have been a serious threat to RJJ back in 97 / 98 let alone now.
Hopkins beats Trinidad and gets elevated to No 1 P4P.......... then gets exposed by Jermain Taylor and slides down the rankings and all of a sudden a win over Tarver elevates him back to top 5 status. Calzaghe only broke into the top ten after beating Lacy when he had been a champion for 8 or so years. America...... wake up and start gving european fighters some credit!
For those who don't know, Woodhall was on the verge of being robbed blind against Keith Holmes if he lasted the distance with his dislocated shoulder/elbow, even the American commentary had him 'three or four rounds up' (look at the scorecards)
Richie was kept on the WBC #1 spot for nearly 18 months by a certain Mr King, when he went into surgery to mend his arm suddenly King gave him the shot!
are you sayin hopkins isnt as good as everyone thinks?
if so, you're straight up crazy. b-hop IS a legend and he is one of the greatest middleweights of all time. maybe, MAYBE calzaghe beats him now, but thats becuase hopkins is 43 years old, and time is catching up with him, but i would still give him a good chance at winning against joe.
It's easy to say he is a 'legend' but look at his record.................. Its there and speaks for itself. Look at the fighters he fought.............. i'm sorry but his body of work does not suggest in any way that he is a legend. Yes he has longevity, but is that enough??? The only fight when he fought someone in their prime and the same weight as himself was RJJ and he looked ordinary. And you can't used his age as a factor now becasue that implies that he was better when he fought jones, the fact is that his prime came late in terms of his age.
Joe's resume is light years better than Bernard's - Woodhall, Reid, Sheika, Veit, Brewer, Mitchell, Lacy, Kessler, you can even throw in Eubank for a name
Remember, Echols gave Hopkins his toughest fight and Brewer was robbed blind against Echols
Trinidad, De La Hoya and Wright were big names in American boxing and to boxing fans but they were all blown-up little guys and old guys
I suppose that my point is that there are certain parallels between the two respective careers. It's just that Joe is not getting the credit that hopikins got when he beat Trinidad and even Tarver.
It really pisses me off when i see quotes from him saying that Joe should have to go to America to fight Hopkins because he is the 'living legend'. He has accomplished no more than Joe in his career and he serverely overestimates his drawing power in America. The only reason that his fights with DLH and Trinidad were big fights were due to the oppostion not him. His style of fighting is boring at best.
And that bullshit about Trinidad being favourite doesn't wash......... cause Lacy was favoured over Calzaghe and Kessler was an even split wit journalists. They were both at the perfect fighting weight and in their prime. Was DLH, Trinidad, Tarver, Johnson (before his prime), Wright?????
e was in 2 life and death struggles with Taylor who fought better against Pavlik than he did against Bernard and was knocked out. So if Taylor proved to be overrated then what does that make Bernard????

Hopkins was actually an underdog against Tito who'd just beat Joppy for the WBA. He also beat Glen Johnson while he was still undefeated and not just beat DLH, but knocked him out for the WBO, before moving up and beating Tarver and Winky. Winky has only been 6 pounds under Hop their whole respective careers, there was no weight issue there as much as Bernard is just more disciplined. Bernard's resume shuts all over Calz, too on better mandatories, and just has an over all better legacy.. Hands down, Joe has fought no one compared to Hops..
The fact that you include DLH, a former super feather champ, as some sort of accomplishment, is amazing. IF Tito, a welterweight, was a fav against Bernard, towards the end of Hopkins' reign, that proves what kind of bums he had been defending his title against. Owned in his prime by RJJ and beaten TWICE by an exposed fighter in Taylor. And Tarver wasn't anyting to brag about at the time he beat him either.

Tuggers beating welterweights is not impressive.
Anyway I don't want to argue about that. Hopkins is very good, he has won 20+ championship fights, he unified the MW, he's division at 175. I don't think he will beat Calzaghe (or ever could have) but he will make it an interesting match.
Exactly, you've already mentioned his best wins. Calzaghe's best wins are Lacy (who was obvioulsy overrated), Kessler and Eubank 10 years ago. None of these compare to Trinidad, De La Hoya, Winky Wright or Tarver.
So if Calzaghe beats Pacquiao you will give him more credit?
You are totally missing the point............
Delahoya started his career at super featherweight and Hopkins should have no credit for beating someone who was schooled by Felix Sturm.
Trinidad has been exposed as a limited fighter at middleweight
Winky Wright came up 2 divisions to fiht Hopkins
If you count the above fights as great wins against live competition then you clearly don't know what your talkin about.
Tarver didn't even put up a fight
How do you know that Lacy was over rated?? He has had a major shoulder injury since the Calzaghe fight so you can't tell. Eubank was still better then than any of the fighters Hopkins had fought (bar Jones).
Look at Hopkins' record.......when did he fight someone who was his own weight and in a 50/50 match. I can only think of 1 and that was RJJ. Calzaghe has done it 3 times and dominated everytime!
I do understand what you're saying. I just think he deserves a little more credit than you're giving him.

opkins lost to the best competition on his record (jones)
Chris Eubank (Former World Champion)
Robin Reid (Former World Champion Olympic Medalist)
Richie Woodhall (Former World Champion Olympic Medalist)
Charles Brewer
Byron Mitchell
Lacy
Kessler
Bika
He was avoided by Hopkins, Jones, Collins, Ottke, Beyer who were all offered fights and turn them down. He even offered Ottke a fight in Germany for a record purse and Ottke chose retirement.
These are all good fighters that don't stack up badly against the top fighters that Bernard defended against.
Tell me who Hopkins beat that i haven't already mention??

Rober Allen twice?
Antwun Echols twice?
Syd Vanderpool?
Joppy ?
Eastman?
Carl Daniels

Hopkins has beat far better competition than Calzaghe. You name me some fighters on Calzaghe's record that are better than the fighters Hopkins has beat?
