A look at the Heavyweight division
Top Guys
These guys will be factors for the foreseeable future
Klistchko- will remain dominent for the forseable future as he is much improved and seems to have beaten his nerve and stamina problems.
Chagaev- All around solid no real weaknesses and has some really solid wins. I would really like to see more of this guy.
Middle of the pack
Ibraginov- solid fighter with good boxing skills and fast hands. His chin may not be that great however. He will make some interesting fights.
Valuev- We will just have to see how he does with his comeback. I think his days are numbered however as he can be easily out worked by many of the top heavies.
Lyachovich- like Valuev he is in limbo also. His fight with valuev is important to see who has a future in the divison. Like the other eastern Euros Sultan and Ruslan he seems solid and was beating Briggs until he got caught.
Peter- Wow talk about going from savior to nothing but questions. Does he really have a chin is his power overrated. Were the Toney victories do more to Toney’s age and injuries than peters skills.
Up and coming
Povetkin- This guy seems like the real deal and has great skills and determination. I just wonder how he will fair against another hungry and confident heavy.
Chambers- Big questions about this guy. If he can throw more punches he will be a factor if not he won’t go to far as he will get beat by any of the eastern euros.
Thompson- For some reason I think this guy is the sleeper of the division. He has some good skill size and a good jab. 08 should be a very interesting year for him.
On the way out
Brewster- He never had that much skill to begin with and his only defense was a solid chin. His power could still win him a few fights but I just don’t see him going anywhere. He was very exciting when he was on top.
Byrd- He is done as a heavy he just does not have the speed or movment to compete with the big boys and has not for a while. Great champ classy guy glad I don’t have to hear his wife for much longer.
Rachman- He has made a career on beating nobodies and getting credit for it the last few years. Its pretty sad when your best win since Lewis is a decision over Monty Barret.
Toney- Injeries and age have claimed Toney. I don’t think he has that much left at heavy like byrd if he could get back to cruiser he could extend his career.
Brock- He just does not seem to have fire anymore and never did much to earn a lot of recognition besides a solid win over Mcline. His chin and conditioning are now suspect as well.
Maskaev- Everyone knows he was always on borrowed time. I am glad he won a title because I always liked him.
mike mollo is fairly good and exciting. chambers could have done to brock what byrd did to Jimmy Thunder completely embarrass him and get a TKO but he didn't and that was a let down for me.
I agree Mollo's exciting, but he doesn't fight enough...
Excellent post! I can't disagree with much
HW is one of the best divisions in boxing.
Are you on drugs, Gerinomo? The hw's have stunk up the joint for the past several years and have been out done on every level by the lower weight divisions. 2007's been a great year for boxing; too bad the hw's had nothing to do with it...
Tony Thompson I think could bring down Wlad since he'll be fighting Wlad before Chagaev. Thompson has never been hurt in a fight and has a nice quick jab, hopefully has some good head movement against Wlad but dude is getting old. I was at his Guinn fight in San Jo and he looked like he was forty. Povetkin and Chambers I'll say the loser of the fight still is a force within the division in years to come, I think Eddie will come out with a win and it definitely will be a great fight.
Thompson has never faced a person with Wlads power. If they fight it should be good thompson does have nice skill and a really solid jab and reach. His power may be a little underated. He hasn't been in the game that long and is still learning but he is really solid. I would pick him to beat a few of the contenders like sergi valuev and ibragimov.

He's a nice guy. A friend of mine is his matchmaker temming from his days with Silverhawk. Granted techinically Stevie is still with Silverhawk, but don't expect much of them. They are folding, but Al is still getting Stevie fights. I got to sit and talk with Stevie at length once last January when he fought here in Orlando. Like I said a nice guy.
Wow thats fantastic, just let him know if ya see him that hes got fans out there that are still pulling for him.
No connection just a big fan. I think people never gave him the credit he desirved. He beat castillo. I became an instant fan the second he layed out mitchel in his 14th fight I think it was. Plus his nick name is great and very true. He's a nice guy. A friend of mine is his matchmaker temming from his days with Silverhawk. may I ask, what is your relation to Stevie Johnston. Haven't see a lot of Stevie's fans around lately so its a surprise to see one on here. No connection just a big fan. nice insite on some young bucks. although some are not so young.may I ask, what is your relation to Stevie Johnston. Haven't see a lot of Stevie's fans around lately so its a surprise to see one on here.
Up and comers huh. Well Boytsov was being handled by Ondrej Pala when the fight was suddenly stopped due to a minor cut below the eye. Pala was walking through his punches and taking control of the fight, the crowd threw beers and everything else into the ring in disgust (and they were a pro-Boytsov crowd). Chambers is better than people think but not as good as he thinks. Povetkin will surprise many and isn't the man I tab to beat Wlad, but Wlad isn't the most indestructible force ever as he is being tabbed to be these days. I will delcare until I'm horse or Chagaev loses that Ruslan is the man to bring Wlad down. Speaking of Chagaev, he has had Hepatitis for years, we've known about it. A lot of people have known about it, the most dangerous thing for him in the ring is his poor perifferal vision he has on seeing shots coming from beneath (I.E. uppercuts). Watch the fight with Ruiz, that was the punch he had the most success with. I feel bad too, because there were a group of us one day sitting around lunch in NYC talking boxing and we came about the Eastern Euro heavies. So we spoke of their weaknesses and of course Chagaev's came about. Well one of the guys was a second for Ruiz and they implemented that as their focal point of the gameplan. I like Chagaev a lot and don't like Ruiz. I was a little peeved, but thats boxing. Anyways, Tony Thompson. its too bad about him, he's too little reward and way too much risk. Tony fights at a nice distance and works combos well to the bosy. His fight with Timur was boring but his fight with Luan was a clinic of how to beat a typical Euro fighter. Tony needs to fight some up and comer like TJ Wilson to give him some cred and hype him up a bit (but it would be stupid to risk his mandatory rating.) Arreola has his flaws yes, but he is determined to win and pressures well, its hard for heavies to not cover up and counter when under that much distress. Arreola and Mike Mollo fight similar styles and a fight between them would go a long ways in telling us who really is a contender in the division. Travis Walker cannot be written off after a fluke loss to TJ Wilson, but I don't believe he's a world beater. JD Chapman may be my boy, but he needs to step up soon. its not like we're not working on it. I've tried getting guys like Sherman Williams and Leo Nolan for some time and Carl Davis Drummond, George Garcia have pulled out of fights with him. He's getting a bit fat right now and needs to do some road work. There is a December Versus date we had for him but he doesn't want to fight until after the holidays. Bermane Stiverne has had some vicious knockouts, so we'll see how he overcomes his loss Demetrice King. And Derrick Rossy; I really liked his workrate against Eddie Chambers, he just needs to learn how to be more effecient with his punches and learn some head movement and subtle shoulder rolls to avoid counters.nice insite on some young bucks. although some are not so young.

Boytsov had major problems with his back. He is fighting in December again, he has spent the last year trying to get back on track.
thanks for the update I heard nothing about his back
I thought by this time boytsov would have proven himself but he really seems to have fallen off and has not fought anyone of note

The more I see areolla and I like watching him A LOT but he is so flawed. His defense is lacking he wings many of his punches and his compation has not been that good. He is one of the most exciting however but he is limited unfortunetly. Believe me I really really wanted to add him to the list but could not bring myself to do so untill he fights sombody with a pulse.
I was going to mention Arreola as well, but your right his defense scares me against the big punchers in the division. I would like to see him fight a quality opponent in the up and coming year to see where he really stands, because he's definitely fun to watch.
Chambers really didn't strike me as anything special. Yes, he's fast but that's about it. Byrd was also fast but he was 10 times more active and won his fights on that. Chambers is also soft, he is not a natural HW and the first powerful boxer who knows how to do a jab-body-head combination with a moderate speed will knock him out.
Ibragimov is nothing special IMO as well. He's a good all-around fighter but he is not particularly fast or powerful. Old Holyfield was able to hit him flash pretty much when he wanted to (too bad he only started to do that in the last 3 rounds). I think he would lose to Chagaev and Wlad if they ever fought.
Valuev will probably become Guinn pretty soon.
I'm just not sold on Povetkin still, although defeating Donald and Byrd in his 13th and 14th fight is very impressive. He's a bit chubby, has problems with defense, and is not as powerful as he was said to be. If he knocks Chambers out, he will get beaten by Wlad with relative ease IMO. He could give Ibragimov, Maskaev, and Chagaev a run for their money though.
I think chris arreola beats all the up and coming you mention....Arreola is starting to get recognition by the television producers and is appearing more frequently than before....Next year is his breakout seasonThe more I see areolla and I like watching him A LOT but he is so flawed. Good list, but I'd have Ibragimov with the first two and I don't think his chin is really in question. He looked bad against Holyfield, but everyone is entitled to an off night.I was thinking of being put down by Austin. Also I put him there because I can't shake the feeling that he just seems beatable
