I've followed both Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton for about a decade now. They are each my favourite fighters and I find that I always get quite nervous and get some doubts before they fight, however confident I am in their ability. I feel sure that Calzaghe is a better fighter than Kessler, but what if age has caught up to him? What if Kessler has put together a masterplan? What if Kessler hits a lucky punch? What if he is simply outskilled? It all runs through your head before a big fight like this, it adds to the occasion for you as an invested spectator.
I dont even want a great fight or anything. I'd happily see it over in one round with a stoppage for Calzaghe, or an incredibly one-sided fight. I just want him to win, he's one of my few sporting heroes. I just hope that if he does win, it isnt through a questionable stoppage cos I'd like to see him finally get some credit around here.
Whatever the result, I will always respect Calzaghe for the incredible career he has produced, regardless of what the skeptics on this forum try to tell me and I will always support him. Win or lose for Kessler, I am very impressed by how he has conducted himself in the build up to the fight. I wish him all the best with his career in the future.
Lets hope that this is a good one. I'm going for a Calzaghe stoppage.
JC sounds confident and that is good enough for me. I dont think he should be eating too many cakes and stuff if what ive heard he likes to eat is true. JC is gettin on but he has a few great fights left in him and theres nothing like good old experience.
Im quietly confident JC will win this. This is the opportunity he has waited so long for.
I dont usually quote myself, but i was right to be quietly confident. I got one prediction wrong in that i though DLH could beat PBF, and we are all allowed mistakes. But i got it right this time. As i say people like to underestimate Joe and he should be compensated with the p4p top spot.
Knew that I shouldnt have been nervous. Joe has never given me any real reason to fear before. I wish that he wouldnt let his chin hang out so much. He could've technically boxed Kessler to a shutout there probably, but I guess that his quirks are what makes him the fighter that he is.
He took some fucking heavy shots though from a Kessler that had more about him than I thought that he did. Anyone who doubts Calzaghe's heart and chin just dont know anything, he barely took a step back all fight.
Major respect for Kessler though, he is a complete warrior. He's as solid as a fucking rock too and the interview that he gave after the fight was lovely. A very down to earth and realistic guy who will blatantly learn from the defeat and use it to dominate that division.
One of my favourite moments of the fight was when the final bell rung, a nice display of sportsmanship from both men and as Kessler walked away to his corner and instead of trying some typical American kidology of raising his hands and trying to influence the judges, he simply nodded to his corner in acceptance that he had been defeated by the better man. Thats how the fight was the full way, honest, fair and completely professional and well-contested and it makes a nice change to see it done this way.
janeorg will now hopefully leave this site after being such an utter prick, but peder and the few other good Danish fans on here can hold their head high.
Anyone else here ordered the fight on satelite setanta ? Im still getting the message at the bottom of the screen saying to press the red button to order.
Does that message just stay there all the time, could it be a freeview bit im watching ?
I paid for the subscription last night
I don't see how losing to Mayweather would cause Hatton to retire AT ALL. I mean he's EXPECTED to loses to the #1 p4p right? If anything, if he puts up a good fight, a loss will even help his career, as this fight is getting his name out there. Plus he just turned 29, I don't see him getting anywhere. As far as Calzaghe vs Kessler, it'd be nice to see Joe win, move up to light heavy, get a fight with Jones or Hopkins, then retire. On the other hand, Kessler is younger, taller, stronger and has many more years of boxing left in him, so if he can unify the title and hold it for a while, that'd be cool too.
My take is different. If Cal wins this, I think he should retire on top. Moving up is just asking for damage to his legacy. If Kessler wins, of course he should then open up and try to clean out the division.

Ok i exaggerated but alot of fighters have their confidence destroyed, mainly due to what people tell you and build you up to be, you think you are great and suddenly lose badly, you think bad thoughts about your talent.
I think he is down to earth enough to come back.
Also a bad beating can ruin your career, you may not retire but you are never the same, see Jeff lacy and Meldrick taylor.
I hope he fights on, what is hatton now, like 48 and 0?
You have to be good to have that kind of record and he is good for the sport i think.
I don't like his clinching too much but it is better than watching John ruiz do the same anyday, although it is still frustrating as hell.
SEE Zab Judah after the Tszyu fight. A perfect example of what you just said.
Can I ask why Hatton will retire if he loses to floyd?
I mean why do boxers quickly retire if they lose 1 fight?
whats the big deal in losing 1 fight,? why does that have such a devastating impact on a fighter's attitude?

There should be no worries as Kessler ring intelligence and very acurate counter shots will difuse Calzaghe. This shouldn;t even be considered an upset but a Kessler vicotory is in the bag. I am sorry Mik, I like Calzaghe a lot but this is Kessler's fight. Yesterday I was watching Joe vs Omar Sheika, today Joe vs Jeff Lacy. Kessler presents a nightmare of a match-up for Joe. Respect though!
I agree that Kessler can do it, but I still think Cal is going to win. Cal can do it too. I wouldn't bet money on this fight though.
Very few ATGs have not been knocked down. Getting off the canvas to win is the true mark of a champion. I wouldn't worry about the knockdowns. The real concern for Calzaghe, IMO, is the age factor. Is this the fight where he grows old? If it is, then Kessler is too good not to win.
I see your point but in this case its happening as he gets older.
both happened after his 30s, he has been in a lot of wars i think its catching up now.
I like Calzaghe too.
only problem i have is he has suffered 2 knockdowns in the last 3 years, he has never been knocked down before that, even in the amateurs.
I think time is catching up, might not be Kessler that does it but its going to be someone who finishes him and hard if he doesn't retire soon.
Good career though.
As for hatton, i think his career is over after the beating he is going to take.
I hope he will make plenty of money for this fight.

You mean you are PRAYING for a Calzaghe stoppage. Hey man I see no problem with you having so much respect and adimration for a fighter like Cal who is a class act as well as a talented fighter. After tonight he should be getting plenty of respect from every fan.
