From the conference call to promote his fight with Golden Johnson:
Question: You chose Paul Williams over the Cotto fight before. What was your reason at that time?
Margarito: Well, the main factor for me was the title. I earned my title in the ring and I didn’t want to lose it like that. I had to fight this guy with my mandatory and I know I had to fight him to keep my title.
And maybe I should have gone straight to Cotto. There’s nothing I can do about it now.
I was very confident I could beat Paul Williams. Things didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. But I’m right back in track so I’m looking forward to this fight and then fighting the winner and maybe Paul Williams down the road.
Nobody had a problem with him until his promoter and fans hyped him up to be something he's not. If Arum came out and said Cotto was the most feared man in boxing, I'd understand why people would hate on him. That shits annoying.
It's too bad really. Margarito should've never been hyped up to being something he's not. His work ethic and courage speak for themselves though as to the type of fighter he is.
He's a good, tough fighter who will give anybody a hell of a fight. The man deserved his title for as long as he had it 'cause he took on every fighter that was put in front of him to defend it against. Now, he'll probably do the same until he gets another shot...maybe against the Williams-Cintron winner. I'd much rather see him fight the winner of that than the winner of Mosely-Cotto.
1) Clottey wasn't 'handing him his ass', although he was winning.
2) Margarito was injured as well.
3) Williams is not 'mid-level' competition. If he was, he would never have beaten Margarito who was undefeated at 147 for over 7 years. Williams is rated top 5 at 147.
For you to get mad at someone based on what their hype boys say is silly. If that's the case, you should hate Floyd as well because his hype-men and fans say some ridiculous shit. In fact, many fighters have fans that do that.
Pac
Roy
Floyd
Klitschko
On and on...
Nobody is getting mad, but on the other hand, somebody who isnt all that good is being presented to us like hes some uncrowned champion when his last 2 fights clearly show he struggling even with mid level competition like a up and comer like williams, and looking lackluster against an injured clottey who was handing him his ass until his injury.
what did he say??
I'm actually talking about Floyd Mayweather. Do you remember the way he went off like a fucking clown on Larry Merchant? I mean, I know the old man can be a dick during his interviews, but since they were comparing Tony's and Floyd's post-fight antics, that particular interview reflected badly on Floyd.
Quoting another person that posted earlier, if Tony acted like an "asshole" after his Williams fight, what did Floyd act like?
Whatever though, this topic is about Margarito. I just thought I'd bring it up since the comparison between the two was mentioned.

BINGO.........:beerchug:
i dont understand all this hate for a man who is a proud warrior. he accepts the loss to cotto but like a true champion he felt he won and so do many of his fans. you guys look for any reason to hate margarito and the mexican fighters.

What Tony did after the fight speaks to his character. It was not during a fight, although things you do during a fight can speak to your character. Floyd also has done stupid, childish, irresponsible things that have made him look bad. Anything a man does is relevant to his character, not just what he does inside the ring or in a post-fight interview. Floyd has said plenty of questionable things in interviews.
Do we need to bring up his post-Baldomir fight interview???
How so?
Cotto is an inside fighter who likes to brawl and work to the body.
Margarito is tailor made for Cotto he likes to brawl and had a ton of body that Cotto can go to work on.
Williams on the other hand, might be able to use his reach, and keep the fight a boxing match where he could outpoint Cotto for 12 rounds.
Margarito is just so damn durable, and he's going to take it to Cotto from the opening bell on. That alone is going to be tough for Cotto. Williams is another one of those lanky guys I figure would give him problems, but I can definitely see Cotto breaking him down. I cant say the same for Margarito.
For the record, I think Williams won the fight. Margarito dug himself into a hole by not really doing shit the first half of the fight. I also felt that Tony might be able to salvage a draw had he won the 12th round convincingly, but props to Paul for fighting through it and winning the round!
What Tony did was relevant to boxing, and what happened inside the ring and his reaction to it.
Floyd was charged with domestic abuse and those charges were dropped.
Whats your point?

I didnt say one was better, I was referring to Margarito's pure power.
Regardless, he beat Cintrion down, but Tony does not have this one punch knockout power that so many of his fanboys seem to think he does.
No argument there, Tony in no way has one-punch KO power. He just seems to overwelm people with his high output and break them down. It was just funny the way you worded your statement...making it seem like it was okay 'cause Cintron didn't get KO'd, he just started crying! :D I see what you're saying though!
It's not as if one is worse than the other. You can't pick and choose. Floyd also has been involved in criminal issues. The issue is that both guys have done inappropriate things. Absolutely relevant.
In any case, no matter what each guy did, if anyone tries to recant and do the right thing, only an asshole (since we are on the subject) would continue to blast them as if they had never apologized or changed.

How is starting to cry from the ass-whooping you're taking better than being KO'd??? I mean shit! I'd fucking rather get my ass put to sleep from a punch than start to cry like a bitch!

Margarito's power is extremly overrated.
He has no knockout victories over credible opponents.
Even in the Cintrion fight, Kermit took tons of punishment and still was never cleanly knocked out, he just started to cry and the fight got stopped.

Yeah he would. These lanky Welterweights like Cintron and Margarito will give Cotto a lot of problems.

The problem is when someone degrades Margarito as if what he said just after the fight was the whole story. It is not. And that needs to be acknowledged in the spirit of fairness and forgiveness. Otherwise, you who blast Tony for what he did are dishonest. It's fine to look at what he did after the fight, but not just the parts that make him look bad.
Just as Floyd is a dick sometimes, and other times he does good things for the community.
I never said Floyd bitched about a decision either. I just implied his behavior has been awful at times, just as Margarito's was after the Williams fight.
Right, but Floyd is an asshole when trying to promote fights or create potential matchups, Tony just bitched about being robbed when he could have done more in that fight.
The two attitudes are not relevant to one another.
yall can say whatever you want, Margarito would be an extremely tough fight for Cotto. Marg is a pretty huge 147lber, while Cotto has come up from 140, although I actually dont remember what weight he comes in at on fight night. anyone know?
but anyways, Marg is 5'11 while Cotto is 5'7 or somethin. Margarito is a very powerful puncher who also throws a ton of punches, and dont tell me Cotto hasnt been hurt before by big punchers. Cotto has those amazing power punches, especially to the body, but Margarito can take a ton of punishment from what Ive seen of him.
Margarito would give Cotto hell. styles make fights.
Yeah he would. These lanky Welterweights like Cintron and Margarito will give Cotto a lot of problems.
