Uh No. You can clearly see Steele grab Chavez and walk him off camera towards the neutral corner before starting the count. right you are, I didn't realize it because of the bad camera angle but Steele still didn't properly evaluate him, he was supposed to tell him to step forward and put his hands up because he was resting his arms on the ropes, before he would have even finished asking him to step forward the fight would have been over.. he keeps saying it's his job to protect a fighter but from what? the fight was over and not 1 punch more was going to be landed.. fuck it lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't hear the 10 second warning, he still didn't properly evaluate Taylor to see if he could continue, he just asked him twice are you okay with a 1 second pause in between each time he asked and then just waved it off which is atrocious, he was supposed to tell Meldrick to step forward because his arms were rested on the ropes which is illegal because it's like he's using the ropes to stand up and he wasn't even looking at Steele.. Steele was supposed to take more time with him, he was asking him if he was okay and was clearly seeing him looking elsewhere, if the crowd was so loud that Steele couldn't hear that 10 second warning then it's possible Taylor didn't hear him ask him if he was okay that first time and since he waved it off so quick the second time there was no room for response, he was highly dazed and looked like he didn't hear him, if he truly couldn't respond why did he put a face of discontent when Steele stopped it? he just plain and simple was supposed to do more to see if he could continue and he didn't.. If the knockdown had happened in the 1st round he would never have stopped it. Steele is a thief. If a fighter doesnt answer you, or even worse looks away like he has no clue where he is at, the ref has to stop it, so yes even in the first round it would have been stopped because he didnt answer. He was holding on to the ropes, who knows if he couldve even walked forward or stood on his own for two seconds.

All you people saying "There were only 2 seconds left, Chavez wouldn't have even been able to land another punch" are missing the point. Steele didnt know there were 2 seconds left. That wasnt his job to know that. If he knew there were 2 seconds left he would have let Taylor continue.

Look ,I have been watching this great sport for 20+ years. So I pretty much know what the ref's job is inside the ring. There is no REASON at all to overanalyze this B.S. Steele FUCKED up. Plain and simple. There is no "well da fight goes twelve rounds" bullshit to argue. Yeah, Chavez was starting to put on a ass whoppin in the latter rounds. steele tried to find the perfect oppurtunity to stop the fight and he did. every one knows steele was tied to Don king. Yeah right!!! /sarcasm It took only a few seconds for Taylor to get back the hell up. And taylor could talk perfectly fine after the fight was stopped. If he was so hurt he would have been rushed to the hospital right away instead of giving an interview right after the fight. The man was Pissing Blood after the fight! i first thought it was a great mistake, but then analizing when taylor stood up it was completly taylors fault for not answering the referee. he asked him twice and the guy didn´t answer. if he would just say something or at least nod im sure he wouldn´t have stop it. so in his judgement because he wasn´t responding to his answers in any way, he decided that he couldn´t continue to fight That's well put. Steele interpreted Meldrick looking away as a gesture. Which is the problem really. Steele was trying to interact with Taylor and that's not the fully effective thing to do because being hurt and being distracted are two different things - and Meldrick was distracted. But Steele was jumpy and especially animated for some reason and just thoroughly dramatic and over the top.. If he was more relaxed and capable of thinking for a second he may have realized that Taylor was looking at his corner. Steele fucked up. I put it on him because he was the one that was going a million miles an hour when he made the biggest blunder in Boxing history. You don't just wave off a fight IN THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES in under 2 seconds. It took Steele 2 seconds to stop that fight. Watch the tape.
