Uh No. You can clearly see Steele grab Chavez and walk him off camera towards the neutral corner before starting the count.
right you are, I didn't realize it because of the bad camera angle but Steele still didn't properly evaluate him, he was supposed to tell him to step forward and put his hands up because he was resting his arms on the ropes, before he would have even finished asking him to step forward the fight would have been over.. he keeps saying it's his job to protect a fighter but from what? the fight was over and not 1 punch more was going to be landed.. fuck it lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't hear the 10 second warning, he still didn't properly evaluate Taylor to see if he could continue, he just asked him twice are you okay with a 1 second pause in between each time he asked and then just waved it off which is atrocious, he was supposed to tell Meldrick to step forward because his arms were rested on the ropes which is illegal because it's like he's using the ropes to stand up and he wasn't even looking at Steele..
Steele was supposed to take more time with him, he was asking him if he was okay and was clearly seeing him looking elsewhere, if the crowd was so loud that Steele couldn't hear that 10 second warning then it's possible Taylor didn't hear him ask him if he was okay that first time and since he waved it off so quick the second time there was no room for response, he was highly dazed and looked like he didn't hear him, if he truly couldn't respond why did he put a face of discontent when Steele stopped it? he just plain and simple was supposed to do more to see if he could continue and he didn't.. I don't know what else to tell you dogz.. 100
" I was the one who posted the video dogz I saw it like 100 times this morning, he didn't direct Chavez to a corner THEN start counting, Chavez went to a corner once he knocked Taylor down and Steele just stepped in and started counting, Steele cracked his neck Chavez's way real quick and even then he still wasn't fully in the corner he was more towards the red ring post, pay close attention to that whole sequence you'll see what I mean..
my whole point is that he was talking all this good referee shit when he actually skipped procedures, he just jumped in when Taylor went down and started counting and Chavez was more towards the red corner when Taylor got up"

Thats all I was trying to get at BHOP. Meldrick should have gotten his place with the champs. And it's sad to see in my eye's with this. Steele fucked up. It happens. But on this scale, man, it just burns me.
meldrick taylor should have gotten his victory ! , richard steele fucked meldrick taylor up ! hes the one i blame for everything that has happened to meldrick.
I may have been a little harsh in my previous posts about wanting to do bodily harm against Steele.
Maybe.
Just a little bit.
Its just that it comes to a little thing I like to call AWARENESS. Steele had been in dozens of championship fights before this.
He knew the stakes that these two warriors were fighting for.
Meldrick got up. He had only two seconds left to go until the final bell. TWO.
It's not like Chavez had a half round to hunt and destroy.
It was TWO seconds.
Apparently, Steele didn't comprehend, or didn't care about this. RING AWARNESS. The ref have better have some to when it comes to a situation like this.
But hey Chavez won. I'm still bitter about it. Can't even lie.
But Taylor should have had his chance to be a champ.
who is everyone?
just because a liar like lou duva says it's true, it doesn't make it so.
where's the evidence?
there's one other fight in which steele acted in favor of a king fighter and one other fight in which he acted against king's main guy at the time.
where is this history of steele acting in favor of king's guys?
where is the evidence that he wasent tied to don king? i meant everyone that i know and all of the boxing experts that i hear talking about it says that Don King had something to do with it. you dont go and stop a fight with 2 seconds in a round left because you care about the fighter, its because he was getting paid. ok, how about when chavez lost a split decision to Frankie Randall when he clearly lost that fight by a wide margin to most people. are you saying Don King had nothing to do with that as well?
Steele didnt just wave off the fight.
He counted up to 9, then asked him twice if he was ok. Taylor didnt respond. So he should then of asked him some more questions??? How many questions should Steele of asked until Taylor responded?
He didnt even have to ask him if he was ok, but did because Taylor was busted up . He gave Taylor a chance to show he was ok to continue, and Taylor didnt respond.
Also, Steele did make sure Chavez went to a neutral corner. Its the first thing he did. Watch the video, and look and Steeles feet wen Taylor goes down.
Not that its at all relevant .
yea but Taylor was ON HIS FEET by 5, he wasn't stumbling or nothing he actually had his arms on the ropes which isn't legal, you can't even do that, using the ropes to rest your arms in the corner, the referee was supposed to tell him to step forward and ask him something to see if he answers correctly but before anything he's supposed to direct the other guy to the neutral corner before even starting to count, he didn't even bother to do that, I was the one who posted the video dogz I saw it like 100 times this morning, he didn't direct Chavez to a corner THEN start counting, Chavez went to a corner once he knocked Taylor down and Steele just stepped in and started counting, Steele cracked his neck Chavez's way real quick and even then he still wasn't fully in the corner he was more towards the red ring post, pay close attention to that whole sequence you'll see what I mean..
my whole point is that he was talking all this good referee shit when he actually skipped procedures, he just jumped in when Taylor went down and started counting and Chavez was more towards the red corner when Taylor got up, Taylor was up on his feet by 5and was looking in the direction of his corner, he was so tired and dazed it may have been even a delayed reaction but Steele didn't give chance, he acted like it was the 6th round and there was sooooooo much more left to go that he felt a need to protect him, the official stoppage was at 2 seconds until the bell meaning had he done that shit with the eye and the finger moving side to side, directed Chavez to his corner before anything, asked Taylor a question and tell him to step to him and put his gloves up.. a vet referee like him could have done all that especially in such a high profile event where Taylor was clearly winning, got up at 5 and showed no signs of being out on his feet, tired yes, but out? no.. the stoppage is the worse I can recall at the moment in the history of the sport.. 100
If the knockdown had happened in the 1st round he would never have stopped it. Steele is a thief.
If a fighter doesnt answer you, or even worse looks away like he has no clue where he is at, the ref has to stop it, so yes even in the first round it would have been stopped because he didnt answer. He was holding on to the ropes, who knows if he couldve even walked forward or stood on his own for two seconds.
All you people saying "There were only 2 seconds left, Chavez wouldn't have even been able to land another punch" are missing the point. Steele didnt know there were 2 seconds left. That wasnt his job to know that. If he knew there were 2 seconds left he would have let Taylor continue.
Look ,I have been watching this great sport for 20+ years. So I pretty much know what the ref's job is inside the ring.
There is no REASON at all to overanalyze this B.S. Steele FUCKED up. Plain and simple. There is no "well da fight goes twelve rounds" bullshit to argue. Yeah, Chavez was starting to put on a ass whoppin in the latter rounds. I'll totally agrue with all of you on that point. I just think Steele's stoppage was wrong. No hate towards JCC on my part.
Steele did the right thing - adrsan84, bigsmoothh, blackirish137, Bobby Pazuzu, brently1979, Contenders, deevel79, ds91, DWiens421, JohnnyQuppercut, mbandit, mrpain81, pelonxsoldier28, quelinost, Ramamaiden, rambov, raysan, SAN D13GO VILLAN, Slotff, The Underboss, Thunder Lips
You should be ashamed of yourselves. No way in hell should that fight of been stopped with what 3 secs. left
steele tried to find the perfect oppurtunity to stop the fight and he did. every one knows steele was tied to Don king. Taylor was winning the fight hands down. the man was going to be shot, at least give him the biggest win of his carreer. what steele did was selfish. what would have happened if he had sent taylor back out there? nothing because chavez wouldnt have even landed a punch. THERE WAS ONLY 5 SECONDS LEFT
who is everyone?
just because a liar like lou duva says it's true, it doesn't make it so.

Quick question: Did the unified rules apply in this fight? i.e. you can't be saved by the bell, including the 12th round?
you actually COULD be saved by the bell in the 12th round. just adds to the controversy, hahaha.
I WISH there had been an immediate rematch so bad
Yeah right!!! /sarcasm It took only a few seconds for Taylor to get back the hell up. And taylor could talk perfectly fine after the fight was stopped. If he was so hurt he would have been rushed to the hospital right away instead of giving an interview right after the fight.
The man was Pissing Blood after the fight! If that aint hurt then I dont know what is.:tapedshut
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx8WQB_C2Hg
that was complete and utter bullshit, see for yourself, he just asked him mad quickly "you okay? you okay?" Taylor being clearly dazed and tired, he didn't even tell him to step forward and put his gloves up, all this good refereeing talk and he didn't even do that, he was even winning the round until that point to where I would call it 9-9, Taylor got caught with a good shot and was already tired out of his mind, Chavez didn't expend as much energy yo Taylor was clearly fighting the fight of his life cuz just the round before he threw 1,000+ punches, Steele saw the pace of the fight, he saw what was going down yet he still did what he did, Taylor wasn't out of it as many of you are saying he was just tired and had his hands on the ropes, that right there was a no no that Mr. Steele was supposed to call him on but all he did was ask "you okay? you okay?" then he just waved it off mad fast, I can't lie he paused and glared at Taylor for exactly 1 second but he didn't say "look at me, can you continue?" or "come to me" he just said "you okay? you okay?" then waved it off, he even said it in the interview "I didn't ask him anything I was just worried about his condition", with so much on the line he sould have given Taylor the benefit of the doubt, it should have never been stopped so fast..
had he just given him a proper evaluation to see if he could really keep on the round would have ended on him, I realize there was actually 5 seconds left on the clock now that I dug up the video but even still if Steele would have said "come to me, are you okay.." do that thing with the finger from side to side and see how he reacted the round would have dead ass ended but he stopped it too soon, he didn't give him a proper chance to respond, he saw the pace, he knew they were both tired as fuck but it was clearly within the final 10 seconds of the fight so he should have given Taylor the benefit of the doubt, he didn't even check to see if Chavez was in his neutral corner before he stepped to Taylor he just cracked his neck and even when he did that Chavez wasn't in the corner, if he was such a good referee why didn't he make sure Chavez was in that neutral corner, why didn't he properly evaluate Taylor? why did he just wave off the fight? I change my opinion on the under the table pay, Steele doesn't seem like he had any intentions especially in the interview but it WAS a bad call, he was too quick in stopping it.. 100

i first thought it was a great mistake, but then analizing when taylor stood up it was completly taylors fault for not answering the referee. he asked him twice and the guy didn´t answer. if he would just say something or at least nod im sure he wouldn´t have stop it.
so in his judgement because he wasn´t responding to his answers in any way, he decided that he couldn´t continue to fight
That's well put. Steele interpreted Meldrick looking away as a gesture.
Which is the problem really. Steele was trying to interact with Taylor and that's not the fully effective thing to do because being hurt and being distracted are two different things - and Meldrick was distracted. But Steele was jumpy and especially animated for some reason and just thoroughly dramatic and over the top.. If he was more relaxed and capable of thinking for a second he may have realized that Taylor was looking at his corner.
Steele fucked up. I put it on him because he was the one that was going a million miles an hour when he made the biggest blunder in Boxing history. You don't just wave off a fight IN THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES in under 2 seconds.
It took Steele 2 seconds to stop that fight. Watch the tape.
