It seems to me that Steward should drop Jermaine Taylor. I like Jermaine, but I just dont know if he wants to be the kind of fighter Steward likes. Steward wants a fighter who will be a student and will devote their life to this sport, and Taylor just isnt that type. After this Pavlik rematch they should just go their seperate ways and Steward should focus his time on Cintron and Andy Lee, two guys that buy into Steward completely. Wlad seems to buy into his philosophy as well, and he follows instructions and trains even when not in camp. Cintron and Lee walk around at about 10lbs over their weight classes limit, something that shows extreme disclipline. Taylor doesnt have that discipline. He is a great fighter, just not a great manny steward fighter.
Manny did a decent job with Jermaine, but essentialy there styles don't mix. Jermaine just didn't have the passion anymore, he's a great fighter but once you get all that money & you have a trainer who is already rich, you loose that grittiness. Like jesus Jermain "keep your hands up"
I do think its rediculous to state that manny is the best trainer now. He has been given great fighters in Wlad & Jermaine. I commend what he did i his early years with Tommy hearns, but even hearns had trouble winning the big fights, hagler, leonard, barkley (2ce) Manny is still a legendary trainer, i just think he may get a lil to much credit
I've said Steward was overrated quite a few times before the the Taylor-Pavlik fight, you could even see the posts, that had nothing to do with my reasoning.
I agree Steward is in no way a suitable trainer for Taylor, however Steward did wonderful jobs on Klitschko, Hearns and I was incredibly suprised with Cintron when he fought Matthyse. If Taylor wanted a high profile trainer I'd say he'd have to go with Buddy McGirt or maybe even Mayweather. Steward changes his boxer's styles to be more mobile and counterpunch a lot. Two things JT isn't good at, and hasn't exercised a lot ever since he's been with Steward. McGirt has the same strategic mind Steward has but he's more known for maximizing his fighters' given skills, just like he did with Tarver, the only time he tried to change a fighter's style was with Gatti but Gatti was a natural brawler more so than a boxer.
McGirt, I think, would help improve Taylor's jab, handspeed, aggressiveness and power. Taylor is good at being the first to engage in a fight, something McGirt likes his fighters to do
If the trainer did his job by giving instruction he cant force the fighter to go by it. Manny is not overrated is more of him and Talyor not getting along but coach and trainer also do make mistakes. At the end they are human.\
I would say he is overrated if he gives useless instruction in not one fight but many fighters and his fighters are doing as he instructed accurately but no result then that is overrated.
If only Taylor would LISTEN to Emanuel Steward, I believe his last fights would have been much different. Hopefully his last fight will force him to do so.
Yes. He finally listened to the "let your hands go" part of what manny tells him (though, that could have been the southpaw thing before this fight), but he still drops his hands, and he finally fought a guy that took major advantage of that. Let your hands go and keep your hands in front of your face... not the most profound advice, but it works most of the time, if your fighter listens. Taylor has the tools to be GREAT, just needs to break bad habbits.
saying manny steward is overrated is suddenly the cool thing to do now that jermaine taylor has been beaten soundly/
if you have the nerve to say something so ignorant then you may as well ban yourself and go talk about playin patty cakes with a couple queerbaits somewhere
Manny Steward has two fighters right now, Johnathon Banks and Andy Lee who have been trained by manny since the very start of their professional careers. Banks is 1 fight away from challenging for Enzo Macc's cruiserweight title, most of you steward "experts" dont even know that. Lee will be on the world class stage in 18-24 months... they have blossomed into excellent boxer punchers under manny, and i have little doubt that they will both someday to be added to the VERY VERY LONG LIST OF WORLD CHAMPIONS TRAINED BY MANNY STEWARD
Steward overrated? Dumbest sh*t ive heard this week.
Look at the difference Steward has made with Wladamir, that ought to qualify him for trainer of the decade right there.

taylor screwed up in taylor/ pavlik. taylor had pavlik finished in the second round with a minute and a half to go in the round (if i remember correctly, manny predicted he would be out of there within 3, which most of you scoffed at), but taylor didnt come out sharp after the count. That is not mannys fault. He isnt training in the middle of rounds. the only thing that went wrong with that fight is that jermain didnt keep his hands up. manny tells him constantly to keep his hands up, but he doesnt do it. i dont know how you can say he mismanaged that fight.
Well I've been over this in prior threads, but IMO the 2nd round was a fluke. Pavlik got caught mouthing off...I don't think he'll do that again.
As to Steward, it was the plan to take the fight to Pavlik. That was a bad plan. How Steward believed Taylor could sit down and outgun Pavlik is a true mystery. Steward just arrogantly believed his own bullshit, that his blue chip fighter could slip Pavlik's punches with his athleticism. It was a terrible plan to try and turn a pure boxer into a brawler-puncher. As Larry Merchant so aptly put it, "Muscle memory wins out again." A very astute quote. Even Steward admitted that he underestimated Pavlik's hand speed.
Never said Steward was overrated. Just said he screwed up on the Taylor-Pavlik fight...and he did.

All time? Futch, Dundee, Goldman, etc. Currently, Roach and Mayweather are possibly better and McGirt while having not done lately, is at times very good. Theres quite a few. Many trainers that are not well known are also very good, they're just not in the spotlight.
Mayweather and roach are not better than Steward. Steward maybe isnt the best ever, but he is certainly the best now. Mayweather rides his nephews success, which there is nothing wrong with doing, but his training isnt nearly as good as floyds fighting.
is manny steward overrated or is it jermain taylor?
I don't feel Taylor is overrated most of the time; many people have been hating on him and predicted the Pavlik fight rather accurately, except Taylor did better than many expected.
WOW so is better than Manny in your opinion?

Stewart is a know it all with his head past the clouds...If he comentates the way he trains, I would hate to listen to his babble... Guy just constanlty contradicts himself and cannot admit he is wrong.. Arrogant know it all.

Maybe Taylor ought to drop Steward. Steward totally mismanaged the fight against Pavlik. Horrible job.
