My 16 year old, Burl Jr. has begun training at Shamrock Gym....home of Aaron Pryor. Under the eye of Terry O'Brien....he has a real shot at being a good one! He is trying to get his older brother Kendall (17)to show up. The kid can switch back and forth from southpaw and has his old man's heart so Terry is psyched. He was soundly humbled in his first (two round) sparring session and finally understands what I've been telling him for years. THIS IS ONE TOUGH SPORT!
Hopefully The Iceman will read this and P.M. me for the phone number. An encouraging word from a tough dude like yourself may be in order John.
Wish the kid luck you derelicts.:boxing:
Wow!
A "maybe" close call last week.
There has been an outbreak of staff infections here in Cincy....so serious that two deaths have been attributed to it. At least two of the Shamrock's boxers are hospitalized and the thing may have originated there.
Junior was not there last week due to a hand injury.....just good luck in disguise! He is going down tomorrow with his cousin who owns the building and a couple of other guys to clean the place thoroughly. Disinfecting, torching old equipment, gloves etc. Then torching the clothes they wear to do it in. This is dangerous business.
Hopefully nobody else turns up sick.
You can't bob and weave from germs!
I am ready and able to dole out some sound advice!! :)
You can have your son email me at IceJohnScully@aol.com if you like
ICE
Thanks John.... He was psyched when I mentioned I kinda "knew" you. He has a few days off school after today so be prepared to have your brain picked.
-The Shamrock was visited by Riddick Bowe and Junior was in with him for a bit. "Wow, Dad! That dudes SO big but SO hard to hit!"
Welcome to world class my boy!
Thanks man. He has the heart for it for real...plus the ambidextrous thing going. He's in great shape-6'2''and 145 lbs. Terry wants to put a little meat in his pecs and work on breathing a lot.
I will see if the kid ( who is much more computer litterate) can post pics or a video update.
He may be a diamond in the rough, no shit.
GREAT size for that weight...if he has decent hand speed and tucks that chin, we may have the next Tommy Hearns on our hands! BEST of luck to him!!
mate good on you, you must of raised them well, I got 2 sons ones two and the others 4 months, I've already got the 2 year old hitting the boxing bag... when your son does good he will always remember his old man, after all where the ones they look upto! ;)
good K for you mate
.....I wish him luck, but give him my condolences on that family name you passed down to him. Thanks alot pops. Someone being named after the narrator of Rudolph the red nosed reindeer isn't something you see every day. :)
Burl Ives was the DaVinci of his generation!:twak:

Best of luck to your son and his future success. Hopefully when I have a son someday he would want to box. I will definitely make sure gets trained. I would want him to do what I should have done and thats start early. I still want to be a pro boxer but I'll just start at an older age than most people.
Best of luck to your son man, always let him know the only way he can succeed is if he puts his all in, when he gets big let me get some tickets to one of his fights.

6'2............145.........Damn good height for that weight
Best of luck to your son man, hope he makes it big and has a great career.
Awesome stuff, wish your son the best for me man. It's hard work but if you stick with it great things can and will happen. I often find myself wishing I'd never moved out of Philadelphia so I could've trained to become a boxer.
Thanks....The Shamrock Gym building is now owned by my kid's cousin Carl David Morris. My brother Carl's son who is "The Toughest Man in Cincinnati" ....he has the belt to prove it...also the broken collarbone.
Toughness runs in the family!
