I am a Winky Wright fan, so I was curious to see how everyone thinks he stacks up against the current champions at 160.
Pavlik - The WBC and WBO champion. I have seen him fight a couple of times, and he has impressed me quite a bit. I don't know how well Pavlik can deal with the defensive matrix, but it would certainly be a competitive fight.
Sturm - The WBA champion. Never seen him, heard he showed De La Hoya up in the warmup for Hopkins, but didn't get the decision.
Abraham - The IBF champion. Never seen him either. I had his fight against Miranda downloaded, but I am OCD and can't watch fights without English commentary, so I have no exposure to him. People have commented that he is a very tough opponent, who seems to avoid punchers (which means Wright is not a fight he would be likely to avoid).
Who do you think Wright has the best chance against? Who do you think Wright has the worst chance against?
Wright's defensive style is going to make anybody in the division look bad. I think he can take Arthur Abraham, Felix Sturm, Edison Miranda and Librado Andrade. I don't think he can hang with a pressure fighter like Pavlik though, Pavlik's power will crush him late, no question about that.
Winky is DONE bro, he looked like he lost his handspeed overnight in the Hopkins fight and he was Telegraphing his punches. I think Winky could maybe get by Sturm and Abraham, but Pavlik would break through his guard and KO him, even Popkins said this.
I think allot of Winky looking slow, was he carried the extra weight bad. It wouldn't surprise me to see him look back to normal form at the lower weight of 160. Just doesn't look good at 170.
Winky will unify the titles if he chooses to. IMO none of the champions are messing with him at 160. Pavlik has a good chance to break through that defence though so that is the toughest fight.

unifying the belts doesn't mean anything. Pavlik's is uncontested as the undisputed champion.
Pavlik would give Wright the first stoppage loss of his career. He'd be in front of him to be hit because he's not mobile and doesn't have the offensive firepower to deter Pavik's attack. Round after round, relentless agression.

vs. Pavlik: Winky would go the distance but probably lose a decision based on punch output by Pavlik. Pavlik wouldn't back into the corners like Taylor did vs. Winky and Winky could only get a draw in that fight (I, like many others, thought Winky won). Pavlik would land a couple of big shots that would make Winky stumble, and we all know judges care much more about aggression than defense and ring generalship.
..
Aggression and the effectiveness and amount of punches landed are the most important criteria when scoring a round. Defense is the least priority. Some judges will score close rounds where everything else is even to the better defensive fighter. That's the only scenario where your really supposed to score a round based on defense.
I'm assuming in that scenario also their workrates are similar and it's not clear who the aggressor is because in a close round the aggressor should always always always get the nod. The guy pushing the fight.
sturm is so underrated.. only 2 losses were a robbery decision to DLH.. and a premature stoppage to castilejo when he was WAY ahead on the cards.. Then beat him in rematch anyways...
Pavlik would likely punch through his guard and hurt him. Abraham would make a boring fight that could go either way. Sturm would lose an even more boring decision. Both AA and Sturm use a high guard and have low punch outputs. Only Abraham is faster, with great power and chin, whereas Sturm has neither of those.
I would love to see winky and pavlik, Neither fighter would back down, and we'd get a great mix of power and boxing. Pavlik gets hit more than he ever has, and winky gets hit harder. It would be a great show.
All the champions present tough challenges for Winky, who may have big problems dealing with getting back to 160 at his age after a fight at 170. A year ago I would have said he dominates all these guys, but now I would say:

vs. Abraham: Winky could win a decision in the US and lose one in Europe. It would be a very entertaining fight, though, especially since Winky has let his hands go so much more the last few fights.
vs. Sturm: Winky by clear decision. This would be the best match-up for Wright, in my opinion. Sturm doesn't have the power to make Winky hesitate about throwing.
Again, I love Winky but he is now just past his prime and he needs to pick his spots. A fight with Pavlik is a tough, tough battle whereas fights with Sturm or Abraham present good money if he goes to Europe but the increasing possibility he wouldn't get a fair shake on the cards.
If I was Winky, I would try to get a fight with the Cal-Kessler loser (since the winner probably gets Hopkins) or perhaps even wait for the Trinidad-Jones fight. If Trinidad wins, I could see that rematch, and if Jones wins, I could definitely see a RJJ-Winky HBO PPV fight next summer.
Winky's time is running out, so it is discouraging that there is nothing being talked about for his next opponent...
winky/hopkins shoulda been a draw to me
and the fact that he went up so high in weight shows me that he is better p4p than hopkins
if jermaine was outboxing pavlik, than winky would dominate him. all pavlik would have is his power and it would be cancled out by winkys ingenious D
Winky UD's Abraham. I'm not impressed with Abraham's boxing. Any real middleweight would rip him a new asshole. Sturm I really can't comment on. Pavlik and Winky would be a weird fight to watch. Winky is tougher than Taylor IMO. He could take Pavlik's punishment for longer, and defense will allow him to avoid a lot of the shots that did Taylor in. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Winky would decision Pavlik, as long as he trained for it. His body is much better suited for 160.

Im a HUGE Winky fan and have seen Every fight i could have possibly seen.
I am also a HUGE Pavlik fan and have also seen Every fight i could have possibly seen.
Pavlik is a TERRIBLE styles matchup for Winky. Pavlik i think, would be the first to stop Winky. I think it would be competitive for a few rounds cause Winky still has his jab but... Pavlik has a pretty good jab as well.
And im not saying Pavlik is the better fighter yet either, its just style wise i think its a terrible fight for Wright. Especially since he's old and fading.
Abraham is a good fight for Wright that i REALLY think he would win. As long as defense holds up, which it should, he should win a pretty entertaining decision.

it surely does, i see ko in later rounds. winky ain't a runner. :boxing:
Winky would decision Abraham and Sturm, but he couldnt stand up to Pavlik's consistant punching for 12 rounds.
Hes getting older, getting hit alot more and showing signs of wear, and I think Pavlik would stop him.
