I'm trying to figure this out. Becuase he was very game in the 7th up intil the point of the knockdown. He was taking some tough shots throughout. Now I know Pavlik can wear you donw. But it seemed Jermaine could take it. But then that one shot landed perfectly and Taylor went into the corner.
Do you think it was from a long fight of taking shots. Or was it that one shot that put Jermaine away?
i'm thinking its the shock effect that finally did JT in. The accumulation of punches hurt him, but the single and 1-2 shots in round 7 finally got through to JT. It's the same way when you've gotten cut or broken a finger playing sports, you're so amped up that you don't feel it so much. But given time, the adrenaline wears off and all of a sudden, it hurts alot. And I think that's how JT took those round 7 punches...all of a sudden, they hurt alot more than the earlier rounds, and Kelly just kept dropping bombs on him.
I think the ref did a great job with the stoppage because even if JT managed to beat the count, Kelly would have done alot more unnecessary damage.

According to Jermain Taylor it was the one shot.

Actually, I thought that Taylor was dishing out more hurt than he was receiving before the seventh round stoppage. So no, I believe that it had less to do with an accumulation of absorbed punishment than him punching himself out in the second, when he dropped Pavlik to the canvas and nearly stopping him. Couple this with the costly strategic error of him attempting to outbox Pavlik on the outside by circling him. He had neither the legs or the stamina at that point, of doing such a thing.
Lastly, he failed to keep his right hand up to block that Pavlik jab and slowed down just enough, so that Pavlik can time him with his jabs. This is what set up the big right hands that had eventually caught and stopped him.
It was an accumulation... Pavlik hits hard...Several times I saw him get JT into clinch mode...JT got hurt several times and played it of well...Look at JT's face after the fight... Pavlik has a good chin, power, heart, and good skills...
Pavlik does seem a bit one-dimension, working almost exlusively with the one-two. That is, until he is finishing. Then he throws from different angles and mixes in a greater variety of punches.
Jt is a very fast middleweight and I think if that fight had went much deeper you would have started to see alot more vriety from Pavlik as Taylor slowed down. Lots more body work, lots more left hooks, but when you have a guy who is fast handed as taylor and can counter off of shots you stick with what works
It is a kick up the backside JT needs though, like a blessing in disguise. People have been warning him he needed to improve. Maybe JT cant improve and weve seen his performances of a lifetime against Berhard Hopkins.
But im almost happy that someone like JT faces hardship. Like he has earned his money a bit now, by taking a few bumps.
it was an accumulation of punches. pavlik was feeding jermain jabs all night, but
i was impressed with both fighters. jermain looked better than he has looked in a while, but unfortunately that brought out the best in pavlik. I love the way pavlik fights, he's got a bright future ahead of him.
Taylor was hit with a right hand since the first round...it was an accumulation of punches followed by a really hard right hand that froze Taylor, followed by an even harder right hand that stunned him to the corner, followed by a combination that smothered him, followed by an uppercut that slumped him, followed by a left hook that felled him
it was never one punch

Accumulation, especially the one-two that Pavlik landed at :59 seconds which was right before the one two that sent Taylor into the corner...
That first one-two (preceeded by a great left jab) isn't getting the credit it deserves on this forum....
Well, Pavlik himself said it was an accumulation and I'm sure that played a part, but I think it was mostly one particular shot that brought about the end. And it wasn't the one near the ropes. It was one a couple seconds earlier in the middle of the ring. It also was a straight right on the chin. You can hear the crowd ooh in unison and Taylor begins his fatal backstepping to the corner. A great punch and Taylor wanted to wait out its effects but instead got caught with another straight right and then the finishing flurry. I think he would have been a lot better off trying to clinch.
Taylor actully showed great chin, took tons big shots from Pavlik through the 7 rounds. I have no idea how he took that right hand without going down and Pavlik's finishing combination was just brutal.
Pavlik has unbelivable punching power.
Taylor has a monster chin as I always thought he would have when it was tested. He has that solid facial structure that allows for a lot of punishment. Pavlik said he hit him with his best shots many times so it was definitely an accumulation of punishment.
Id hate to fight guys like JT though. His face dont change so you dont know if he is hurt. Real poker faced looking. Even when he was down it only looked like he was taking a breather.
But he must have been hurt real bad to not try and get up.
Nah....it's the brain damage that causes that.:smashfrea
I don't think Taylor realized how hard Pavlik hits. It's something he never dealt with and was'nt ready to handle. Getting hit in the face by dudes like Winky Wright and Cory Spinks is not the same as getting hit in the face by Pavlik.
To his credit though, he did take some good shots, but in the 7th Pavlik landed the straight right VERY clean. When he got hit with that first 1-2, It froze him. He did'nt try to defend himself. He did'nt try clinch. He did'nt even change his stance or try to move out of the way. He took 2 baby steps backward and then came the second 1-2, which he basically standing still for. That one REALLY hurt him AND sent him into the corner.
The rest was unneccessary but unfortunately for Talyor, I think he was too stunned to even think to take a knee.
yeah i think it was more a gut check for taylor than anything. hes not use to being hit hard so when it happened it looked like he was so shocked. no doubt he will be ready and respect pavliks power more in the rematch. i think he would do good because besides getting caught with that right he was holding his own. he just needs to keep that left hand up and know that pavlik aint someone to take lightly.

that shows alot of tougness on jermains part. he hung in there as long as he could but facing a puncher like pavlik i knew that it was bound to happen. when he kept getting hit i was thinking "damn hes gonna get hurt" and he did. taylor still did a good job listening to his corner though. i was really impressed how he showed improvement in that aspect.
Yes, he showed a lot of improvement and fighting off of the ropes...combinations, nice jab
The punches just caught up to him...
in the 7th, he took a perfect right hand (the one you saw on the slow mo cam), stood there to keep fighting, took another right hand that backed him into the corner...then Kelly finished him...
he took quite a few clean right hands on the chin throughout the fight....he has a good chin, but there is only so much ANY human body can take vs a big puncher
