Is it me or is a sport that has been predominatly black all of a sudden finding itselff more and more dominated by white fighters? Before anyone gets nuts and starts a race war hear me out.
Kelly Pavlick, Ricky Hatton, Wlad Klit, Valuev,Calzaghe,Kessler, and a host of other white fighters are suddenly all over the place. I have been a fan for 25 years and in that time i Have never seen such an influx of white talent into this sport.
Although it may seem like Color plays a factor in ability, I can assure you that upbringing has much more to do with the equation. Boxing is not and has never been a mainstream sport for the middle class in this country. Somwhere around the 70's whites really stopped participating in boxing as a whole. This lead to less and less whites participating.
Fast forward to today. Most of the whites seen are eastern european, but even so, the american side is bringing more in aswell, with some younger fighters progressing now. Make no mistake, I'm not saying whites are the majority, but no doubt, they have increased in percentage of quality alot.
As the gap between the rich and the poor widens and the middle class disappears, I expect to see more and more Whites comming in to reshape the landscape of a sport that sorely needs the diversity!
This is not racist. It is my impressions of the influx of whites in the limelight of a sport that hasn't seen that in a long time!
White america didn't "move away" from it. They still TRY to get into the sports.
The sports just have put more of a focus on pure athleticism (speed, power, jumping, quickness, hand/eye coordiantion, etc). And the white athlete is having a tough time competing with the black and latino athlete.
The first question is "what's his 40 time?".... speed is just so much more valued today.
I concur, do people realize how rare it is for an NFL player to run 40 yards it is in a straight line during an actual football game. Though tenths of a second mean millions of dollars on your contract. The world works in myseterious ways.
Obviously blacks will always continue to dominate the sport of boxing, but the ratio of name white fighters in the sport has indeed increased. Though seeing as how black people are only 12% of the country, and an even smaller percentage in the western world as a whole, I don't see how this is an accomplishment or "a shift in the color spectrum" since the level of quality white opposition should have always been greater to begin with. This is not an issue of lifestyles either, but quality fighters..
What does population have to do with it? It has everthing to do with economic background.
If what you are saying is correct explain why boxing has been predominantly black for the past thirty years?
It was once predominantly white. What Happened?
How many champions from the slums of society? How many white people live in those slums?
The truth is, "White America" moved away in droves from athletics at one point, whereas "black America" did not. Thats not racist, thats just truth.
Look at every Major contact sport out there and you will find that overall blacks are the majority.
Boxing,Basketball,Football,Baseball(has switched to a more Latino majority), Track and field, and so on.
Sports like Tennis,Golf,Hockey,Bowling and any other non brutal sport is primarily dominated by whites.
why is that?
To be honest the fact that a shift in the colour spectrum actually matters enough for people to make discussions about it makes me question their character and true interest in boxing.

not everyone has the privledge of having an actual ball to play with, i know this may seem rediculous to you, but just take my word for it.
boxing also costs hundreds of dollars, have you ever trained? Well often times you have your gloves, your headgear which you has to fit you, you have to pay the trainer and all types of other gym fees and all kinds of other shit, amatuer tourneys are not free. No matter what sports costs money, period. , training in boxing costs money.
I guess i was lucky. In my town there were two gyms. No fee's, and all the gear was provided. Sure, it wasn't top of the line shit, but it was everything needed! Road work, bag work, a small ring for sparring, and some weights for shadowboxing. The city funded the place i was at, and the guy that ran it worked for the city. Good times.Spend 7 years there and never dropped a dime!
Not to say that some gyms arent expensive.
Yeah, I spend HUNDREDS, run my kids all over the country to support their hobbies, and coach instead of just using a patchwork ball! Excuse me, "makeshift ball" to quote you!
Yeah, I'm the bad dad!
Fukin clueless!

I live in NYC and most of the boxing gyms I use to visit to either train or watch boxers are closed now. All of the PAL's and Boys Club of America's gyms that use to offer boxing are either closed or no longer offer boxing classes. The few boxing gyms that are open cater to white-collar workers that can afford paying $125 +/month to train. I recently called Gleasons gym to find out about training and was told there is a monthy fee to use the facilities plus the trainer's fees (each trainer defermines his price). After calculating the cost to train at Gleason's with a trainer it would have been around $130/month providing I got a trainer that didn't charge too much per lesson. The only way an inner city youth with an interest in boxing is able to pursue a career as a boxer is if he has connections to a trainer that will train him for free or a cheap rate. This doesn't happen too often unless the trainer is the kid's father, another relative, or family friend.
I live in New York too. There's a gym out in Freeport(in Long Island) New York that seems good to me. I go there now. A lot of young boxers but experienced trainers and all.

Has nothing to do with how difficult something is. Its about what the kids see around them. Boxing gyms aren't as prevalent as they once were unless we are talking big cities. Football is everywhere in every state. It wont be hard for a kid to find a basketball court either.
Also these sports are on cable television a lot, and are covered by big networks on a daily basis. You can bet your ass if boxing was on CBS and FOX every Sunday afternoon that kids would be flooding boxing gyms.
To be honest, you sound like a cheap ass dad.
and not only that, you make it seem like all the best soccer players in the US are white which couldnt be further from the truth.

Only to those who base too much on color and not skill.
I stated in this thread, that it wasn't about color, that it was more about upbringing!
Stop argueing now please. You are shooting yourself in the foot for no reason at all!
so your saying you can name any era since 1960 that whites were champions in sooo many divisions?
Ok lets here it? I wont wait, cause there isn't a time between here and there! sounds like a resurgence to me!
Sounds relevant to me!

Man, have u ever tried to get your kids into soccer? Do you even have kids? Lets see, first theres sign up costs, then uniforms, then theres the trips every weekend to the games and lets not forget the pizza when the team wins and fuck, whos gonna buy the trophies for everyone, cause everybody gets a fukin trophie nowdays and on and on and on.
I have been down that road. I know it costs out the ass!!!!

I wasn't saying you said they dominated, I was restating that point. Because it's important. Anyone can see their are popular white fighters. Wow.. Lets start a thread about that! That's important!

Jesus man, Atleast read my fukin post before you reply. Where did i say Whites are dominating? I said whites are becomming more of a presence at the higher levels of the sport. I even pointed out that whites were NOT dominating!
Read my original post and get back to me man!

Nothing went over my head. The fact that you're getting excited about literally 10 to 15 fighters, out of ALL the fighters that are basically, otherwise anything BUT white, is kind of pitiful. Not to sound mean, it's just that there have always been good white fighters. There still are, no reasont o think they are or will be dominating the sport, anytime soon.

Yes.. you pointed out some white fighters. how about someone point out all the Mexican or Black fighters... Maybe we need a couple of people for those jobs.
That swoosh sound you hear is the concept of this thread going right over your head!
