inspired by the thread about boxers that did..which boxers pretty much had it good while growing up? like not in ghettos..who had no money struggles etc...
Muhammad Ali 's folks owned their own home in a middleclass neighborhood in Louisville,KY. Poverty was never an issue in the Clay household.
I don't know this for a fact, but I get the sense that the Klischko brothers (Vladimir/Vitali) were well off at and from birth.
Other fighters suspected of not having a "rough up-bronging" are:
Sugar Ray Leonard
Oscar De La Hoya
Joe Calzaghe
Lennox Lewis
Ali did not grow up poor, but he came from an abusive household. his dad was a drunk and a violent one.
Oscar grew up in the barrios of East LA, hardly an ideal place for a childhood.
yeah man pac man had it mother Fin hard. living in a Fin box on the side of the road with his lil bro bobby and slangin stolen cigs just to eat!
During the countdown to Pacman/Barrera II, I remember pac saying how his father killed and cooked his pet dog just so they can have something to eat. If that's not poor, then i dont know what is.
actually yeah MAB came from an upscale family upbringing(for mexico's standards). his father designed movie/tv sets. mab was even fittin to go to law school all paid by his parents before he took on boxing obviously
Yep i heard about that too...MAB supposedly going to Law School. Impressive. So it meant that he had college education bec to be able to enter law school, you should have pre-law studies first. That's admirable. Incidentaly, I heard Cristian Mijares is also planning to go to law school. How true is that? Well hope he'd do that. You know...boxing is not a lifetime career.
people say barrera didnt grow up poor
Actually Barrera did not only just grow up not poor but his family extremely respected in Mexico. It was a huge disapointment that he became a fighter to them. ( I seen it on one of those biography type things) He was actually supposed to go to law school I think his one brother is a lawyer or doctor...Marco had everything and more as a kid.
IMO that makes me respect him a bit more believe it or not because he is fighting for himself and to accomplish what he has and take the punches he has over the years when he did not have to shows he fights for glory..
Something few guys do anymore
Then, I would have to disagree about Floyd. He mentions having a drug addict for a mother, drug dealer for a father
Sounds like a match made in heaven...
Oscar Delahoya was from gangland, East Los Angels and he was poor. How he stayed away from gangs can only be attributed to boxing and his dad pushing him to the gym.Obviously, I did not know that. I was judging a book by it's cover. De La Hoya seems so refined in his manner, I was of the impression that he was born with the proverbial gold spoon in his mouth.
Money was a problem growing up, some sort of tradgedy in life, things didn't come easy to you, and your story makes people want to cry.
HAHAHAHA. Your story makes people want to cry. That was classic.
Skills be tripping!!
Then, I would have to disagree about Floyd. He mentions having a drug addict for a mother, drug dealer for a father and living in a 1 bedroom apartment with seven people. Definitely doesn't sound like a walk in the park, don't you think??
I'm sorry, but the term "rough upbringing" seems a bit relative. Maybe we should define generally speaking what a "rough upbringing" is.

pretty much most of the european fighters..
personallly im from denmark, and what we percieve as ghetto or a rough neighbourhood, isnt anywhere near, the enviroment that some of the african, south american or american fighters experience..
basically the standards of living. without knowing the exact number or percentages, i would go so far as saying, that at least 7 out of 10 danish boxers comes from a rather normal enviroment.
yeah man pac man had it mother Fin hard. living in a Fin box on the side of the road with his lil bro bobby and slangin stolen cigs just to eat!
stolen cigs LOL! pac actually didnt bring his brother when he went to manila. bobby was left with their mom. he was also a baker's hand, and a construction worker at 13 or 14 i think.
Oscar was not that poor but he did have rough time.
Every human being have a rough time it doesnt have to be finical.
Hi Ferocity where have you been?
Oscar was poor. His family was receiving food stamps and that yellow government chesse. Yeah, Delahoya is very rich now, but he did come from a poor family.
I've been here just waiting for the 29, Sept or at least next week when Arreola fights on telefutra damn the september blues.
