I see a lot of people in this board claiming he would get killed if he ever moved up. I gotta disagree I think he would still be a really good fighter at 154. For the Margarito fight he was about 17 pounds over what he weighed in as. And I really think it would probably benefit him to not have to push to make 147 when he can just make 154. If anyhting I think he would have more energy at that weight. Two things that will go with him when he moves up. He still has a good reach and his length is a problem for most. Also along with that his height as well. This guy is not 6'2 he has to be taller.
The second thing that easily comes with him is is handspeed. Which could look faster at 154 because he'll be fighting slightly bigger opponents. And his boxing skill, his chin, and jab can all help him compete at a weight higher than 147. Now 160 is a different story. I think he would have to adjust to that weight and fight a couple of tune ups at that weight to become comfortable.
totally agree. He shouldn't give up his physical advantages. This aimed at those who think that he couldn't compete physically at a higher weight class.
Thomas Hearns fought at welterweight for a long time and was devestating in that class.
yes but obviously if williams moves he will but on muscle and therfore gain power wont he?
i dont really think he should be at 147 its just freakish he needs to pick on someone his own size
He will gain muscle when he moves up obviously, but no one ever gains enough muscle to stay on par with the division when they move up. Look at Floyd Mayweather Jr., he had some punching power at 130, not as much at 135, about the same at 140, not very much at 147, and none at 154. It diminishes a little every time you move up.
Jumping 2 weight classes for a light puncher is a dangerous move.
I agree, i think if he moved up to 154 he would clean up and take over the division.
But the big money fights are at Welterweight so he aint goin nowhere :D
He's not that strong, and he's slow for his size. I mean Margarito was able to turn it on impressively against Williams in the mid late rounds. Clottey looked better against Marg then Williams' when he had his best moments in the fight. Either I'm blind, or Williams' reach and leaning jab are slightly over-rated.
Williams leaves himself open with just about every punch, doesn't have a intimidating punch at all, and isnt fast enough to hold down anyone significant.
I have to disagree for his size he moves around the ring well. And his hand speed and how he puts together combinations is very solid in my opinion. And I would think he would be faster than the bigger opponents at heigher weight classes right? His jab was really good to early on in that fight as well in my opinion. Not to argue though.
Williams fans are Margarito haters!
No that's not true. Marg had 2 or 3 really good rounds. I'm not a hater. Paul is an exciting/interesting guy to watch.
He should only move up if he can't make the weight anymore, there is always too much about emphases on fighters moving up in weight for no real reason. Most fighters who moves up in weight prematurely always have problems.
Thats as stupid as saying Tito should have been fighting at 160 instead of 147 because his KO power was to unfair for that division... He has some natural advantages, let him use it.
I agree with all of the poster here, and keeping down on weight for long time is even hard.
So each has it advantages and disadvantages.
My only concern is that his already slight lack of power at 147 will turn into the kind of lack of power that can't even back a guy up if you put your whole body into it at 160.

You must have not read what I said.

Exactly, this is the reason why so many fighters aren't as successful at higher weight divisions.
Well, yes, but remember that they have to compete with the same shit at the higher weights. If someone who should be fighting at middleweight is fighting at welterweight moves up to middleweight at some point, they won't be fighting people who should be middleweights, they would be fighting people who should be fighting at light heavyweight or so, so it's not like anyone can blame one person, everyone does it.
Yeah, especially if he keeps making the weight.
I mean, why would anyone give themselves any advantage in a fight, that's CHEATING!

Not directed to all. But some of you are not comprehending what I said correctly. I'm not saying he should move up. I'm saying he has the ability to move up. For now I'm hoping he stays at welter and cleans out the division.
fo sho. my bad. hey paul started off at 160. he will be successful in moving up weight classes. 154 will be no sweat. 160 is where it gets interesting, and he will still pose match up problems for alot of fighters at 160.
Williams pussy ass doesnt wanna move up,thats like cheating.:nonono:
Yeah, especially if he keeps making the weight.

I can see Paul kicking ass in the 154-160 division BUT the strong fighters are at 147. Paul doesn't look like those fighter who kill to get to 147 he looks great at 147
for real, its not like he struggles like moranda and pavlik to make 160. he comes in under 147 everytime.
paul Williams said he can easily get to 160 and in the future, I think we will see him there
if he does move up, it's gonna be tough to see him win a fight,
he has no power and he will most def. get knocked-out a lot faster

Seriously why can't Paul Williams move up? | BoxingScene Community
