We had the thread of who was the biggest waste of talent. Now I'm interested in who did the most with the talent they were given?
My first nomination isn't a popular fighter but he definitely beat lots of guys who were much more talented than him and beat top guys in his division. Who am I speaking of.....John Ruiz.
so true with Gatti...
Pacman also stands out IMO... as the haters always emphasize, he's just a one-dimensional brawler with little technical boxing skills... i think he's done quite well for a one-dimensional brawler...
That's actually a really good point.
Because Manny has made a living off coming forward throwing right left right left right right left right left right left *Holds arms up in the air cheering with crowd* right left right left.
I'm not kidding either, he destroys everyone like that.

Or Barry Sanders. I would lean towards Jordan but Roy is close behind.
Roy sticking his head out with his hands to his sides, getting out of the way right when the punch was thrown no matter how straight to the target it was, or how fast they threw it just defied all. And him taunting Kelley was just flat out ridiculous. That's the supreme of all.
Someone putting their hands behind their damn back in a boxing match. LMFAO. People always are quick to point to him "fighting bums" but I always said it's just how he made them look like bums. None of those guys were damn slouches........NONE. Of course you throw in the tuneup Pazienza type who wasn't a bum himself, just made to look terrible because he was completely outgunned by Roy.
And just to refresh everyone's memory he played the same tricks with the ATG James Toney. Totally outclassed him.

It's already been said in this thread- and I have to agree- Arturo Gatti. Not the fastest guy, not possessing the best defense, not having the most amazing footwork - but with a decent punch for junior welterweight and likewise decent reflexes. He made the most out of the boxing skills he had and, with probably his biggest attributes - toughness and heart- threw himself across the finish line time and again. Gatti won battles through sweat and blood, pure old fashion desire - and when a fighter's number one quality has nothing to do with his actual boxing skills, and he still gets as far as Gatti did, well that's making the most out what he did have.
I agree. This guy is the greatest natural athlete the sport has ever seen.
Yeah maybe the greatest Athlete in an athletic sense I've ever seen. However Ali, Jordan, Lance Armstrong are all up there to an extent for sure.
But I'd lean towards Roy.

I wouldn't say RJJ for a couple of reasons. First off his talent level was still at a level above 99% of anyone near his weight. However he lost and hasn't been half as competitive due to his huge reliance on talent.
RJJ depended too much on near super human reflexes to dodge and avoid punches by hair thin margins. Once he lost that SLIGHT fraction he wasn't able to compete on the same level because he wasn't technically sound.
If RJJ had coupled technique and skill with talent he would've still been the #1 p4p champion. RJJ beat guys he was more talented/athletic than. I think he could've juiced his still great talent for many more years if he had the dedication of perfecting his craft the way JT, Hops and PBF.
Roy.
He's in my opinion just a flat out better athlete and specimen than most if not all fighters in the history of boxing. He exploited that and rightfully so.

Baldomir is slow of hand and feet, but uses his style well + Uber Chin.
Gatti didn't have everything but used it well. Ultimately he was bound to get dominated by someone too tough (Gomez, Baldomir) or someone too skilled (de la Hoya, Mayweather).
Roy Jones becuase Nuff Said.
I look at a guy like Alfonso Gomez and how much he's improved..
He has plenty of heart - and now some physical spark.
The guy is about as far from "natural athlete" as you get.
He was pushed that naturally gimpy body of his places I did not think even possible.. Right now it's him by far.
I agree with Gatti and was gonna nominate him first but I knew someone else would name him.
The second guy I would mention is Bernard Hopkins. Bernard had elite level talent but his dedication to the gym allowed him to juice it and hang on to it at the highest level for 20years.
I'll go with Arturo Gatti.. Wasn't rhe fastest, strongest or biggest guy. But for the talent he had, he milked it for all it's worth. That's good.
Completely Agree :)
