RJJ hasn't been the same since the second Tarver fight when he was brutally knocked out for the first time in his life.
I've noticed looking at threads on Roy that a large number of people are divided over his current potential, status, and prospects.
The Hanshaw fight was a decent little step back in the right direction..
How did it all come to this?
What happened to Roy Jones Jr?
Listening to some folks talk about this you would think Jones never really had anything wrong with him..
Or that he's cleared it all up with the Hanshaw victory..
Hell, he can even beat Bernard Hopkins now.. Or always could..
This is a chance for some newer members to check in on this issue.
Mentally, Jones will be up against it big time in a matchup with Calzaghe. If he doesn't have his head together completely, can he still win?
I am not at all sure at this point.
didn't Roy waited two weeks to lose 25 pounds for the Tarver fight? I think that was his first problem, two he was simply past his best at that point. I'm pretty sure a Roy at his prime would of beaten Tarver easily.
I agree, but the majority of people miss the mental thing altogether.
They never even saw it.
Yes, it's still true: You have to be Mentally 100%. You have to have your Confidence. This is also why you train and prepare 100%.
You can be 100% physically, but if you are not 100% mentally there, you are not complete. But the same goes for if you are not the same physically...you can mentally go down.
You have to know how to deal with the problems in order to keep your confidence high. This is also why athletes lie to themselves when they lose. For example: "It was just a bad day" "I didn't bring my "A" game with me" "God didn't want me to win because he was testing me." This allows them to move on from a devastating loss.
Whats up Addison, long time since we have had one of our little "discussions" hehe. Tito got my hopes up at the beggining, but as soon as Jones started backing Tito up I knew it was over. Tito is really a one dimensional fighter. If he isnt going foward, he already lost.
Hey Joe, I was really impressed with Tito. He fought with great courage and showed sharp tools in the opening rounds. I hope he fights again.
Roy Jones (whether his fault or not) left too many questions unanswered in his career. Despite this, boxing fans never had reason to question how good he was because he was still so dominant (even though it wasn't against the guy's people wanted to see him fight). Tarver, a guy just as old as him, comes along and gives him the toughest fight of his career. He fights him again, and Tarver KOs him. He plans a comeback fight against Glen Johnson (another guy his age) and gets KO'd again.
Guys who were much better than Tarver and Johnson that were potential fights for Roy back in the day never came off. Him losing to Tarver and Johnson raises question about how would have handled the guys he didn't fight.
Jack.. what the hell are you talking about?
Tarver and Glen Johnson were the types of guys that Roy had previously avoided? LOL, please. If he had beat both of them, they would have been another group of names on that list of guys that he made look like bums. It's not like wins over them would have put him on a different level. He already did that. You know- when he beat BETTER competition?
If you are physically diminished, mentally you go down hill as well, just like if you are fucked upstairs, the rest of you downhill.
People put too much on mental first without thinking "Why"
Say you have a top athlete. This athlete is an asthmatic. With his inhaler, he can compete well. Now, take that inhaler away from him and tell him to play. What happens?
He will be concerned with not being able to breathe because he has asthma, an doesn't have his inhaler to aid him. Because he has a physical problem, mentally, he goes down the shitter.

You think Jones lost to Tarver the 3rd time because of his legs?
He was petrified. That can affect the legs..

Say you have a top athlete. This athlete is an asthmatic. With his inhaler, he can compete well. He is mentally strong because he knows he can compete, with the aid of his inhaler. He is physically healthy with it. Now, take that inhaler away from him and tell him to play. What happens?

Did the knockout effect him, Yes, but to him, in the first fight, he didn't feel like his normal Superman self and when you don't feel yourself, don't feel as strong, mentally you go down hill, which also effects tesosterone levels in your system. High confidence produces higher levels of testosterone, and vice-versa.
Well, Roy Jones skills/reflexes were so good that they hid his lack of fundamentals. Now that he is in his uppers 30's and those reflexes are diminishing, his lack of fundamentals really show. To me, Jones dint look that good tonight. I thought he lost the first 4 rounds and then swept the next 8. The deciding factor in this fight was not Jones speed or ability, it was Trinidads lack of power at that weight. Tito just dint carry his power up to 170 pounds. Dont get me wrong; Jones won the fight, but I dont think he would beat any of the top fighters right now.
Absolutely, Jones was able to get away with all sorts of stuff because of size and power. Good post, Joe. Well stated.

It's still about "Legs." You can tell where a fighter is in his career by the strength of his legs. And this discounts the disabled athletes before somone mentions it.

I was afraid someone would think that.. Nope.
Clearly, the source of Roy's problems were mental. This was about what was troubling Roy, what was wrong with him.. I think we can see clearly his reflexes, speed, ect. are still very much intact - even 3-4 years later. How anyone thought otherwise is well beyond me.

Everybody ages different, but age does eventually catch up with you.
Circumstances are more important/reasons.
Roy lost the muscle weight to fast and it could have destroyed his equilibrium in his system. If you put to much stress on the body, Cortisol levels go up, which cause you to be severely fatigued. You can suffer from adrenaline fatigue. At his age, the way he did it, could have been the reason, if it wasn't from "other" means/reasons.
When he came back for Tarver (I), he looked ill and his feet were in wet cement. He would never be the same.
