I thought this would kinda be an interesting lil discussion. So what do u all think?? personally I think Don king himself should offer a multi-million dollar contract to the athlete most capable of being a contender. Sounds messed up I know, but the only way to heavyweight division booming again is to look towards the NFL
Linebackers and Strong Safties would make excellent potential boxers. The main two positions where the focus is reading the opponent's offense, hitting and knocking the shit out of the ball carrier.
You could build more boxing gyms. They need to stop having so many PPV's. NFL will always be more popular. More money and your not getting punched in the face. And those NFL players(not all of them at least) run 5 or 6 miles a day and then do work at the gym.
Its not that they can go take up boxing, its the fact that they are great athletes, and if they would have had boxing gloves in their hands at a young age instead of a football, then maybe they could have been good.
Do you really think that's the only way to make the Heavyweight division legit again? Hire former football players?
lol, for real. These big thugs should attempt MMA and rolling around on the floor in the underwear rather than attempting to emulate the sweet science like a bunch of drunk elephants.
kids going where the big money is at... an above average boxer retirement is spent at a big-O tire plant/under supervision/living off of gift from the public.... while an above average baseball/basketball/football player retirement is spent on a golf course/eating seafood/courting old groupies
compare $$$ and health
joe frasier to joe montana
Ali to barry sanders
larry holmes to larry johnson grandmama
Iron Mike Tyson to Micheal Jordan
get my drift
if i have athletes for kids they won't box either even though it's no. 1
All the most respected experts have said time and time again in the last 2 years that all the best heavyweights in the world are currently playing in the NFL. They get more money there and don't have to worry about brain damage. Knees is another thing.
If you ever wonder why Americans don't dominate the HW division right now, blame it on the NFL.
Oh, so the multiple concussion syndrome is unfounded correct?
boxing back on network TV
historically, it's always been a sport of the poor & working class, yet regular viewing of boxing as a sport is barred from its core talent pool.

I think a good start for attracting young athletes to boxing would be to attract advertisers to the sport so you could keep down the pay-per-view rates or eliminate them completely.
In other words, increase exposure. When kids see it on television, they want to do it.
You have to love your sport. You cant just take up boxing, you have to live it.
I do see what you are saying though. Guys like Ray Lewis and Shawn Merriman are physical specimens. If someone put boxing gloves in their hands at a young age they very well could have been great heavyweight boxers.
Seriously.. how about training bigger guys from a young age, who love boxing, and might stay dedicated?.. That's a reasonable approach.
Or simply eliminate the monopoly deathgrip Don King has over unifying the division. That'd work too. That's why I'm glad Vitali is coming back, aside from the fact that I like him a lot he has the potential to get the other 2 titles. And while the division still won't be unified, Don King won't have his fucking hands all over it which is good enough for me.
