Ike Quartey was a beast

Bazooka is a great fighter too bad he didn't get a credit fighting elite fighters.

Quartey was an excellent fighter. Might have one of the top 5 jabs in boxing history. If he caught you with it, you might be saying good night. I wont repeat what was already posted, cause I agree. The lack of good fights hurts him but they were not all his fault. But overall, a very quality boxer.

Look at him in 1993 when he KO'ed Crisanto Espana to win the welterweight title. The guy was a monster if he fought Tito in 1995, that would've been an F'ing war. Alwys liked watching ike fight!!! He is an awesome fighter!!!

Not really, granted he wasnt as good as Ike, Tito or DLH, but he would of gave any of them a hell of a fight.

ah..come on..lol..I loved to watch him fight, did you see the fight between him and Jose Luis Lopez?..that was insane.. Im not saying I didnt like JP Im just saying he was lacking in some key areas the other mentioned fighters werent....his career kind of proved that didnt it?

yes very upsetting not to mention Jose Luis Lopez and James Page that was a golden era..and all these talents never really got a chance to duke it out. James Page was just a shithead that I dont like to include.

I did some research to find the exact reason why Quartey was inactive from his fight with Jose Luis Lopez (Oct.1997) to DLH (Feb.1999). What I found was that he was scheduled to fight Sweet Pea on 4/25/98 but Pea tested positive for Coke & that fight was scrapped. Quartey was then matched up to fight the guy Pea beat in his previous fight but Quartey refused to sign the contract to fight that guy. He then went into negotiations & signed a contract to fight Tito in 98' but was sued by Main Events (I believe they had options on him) so that fight was halted & Quartey was offered the DLH fight. Ike had been out of commission for a over a year but was rumoured to be VERY sharp in training for the DLH fight. DLH then had an "injury" & the fight was pushed back & Quartey was out of action for almost a year an a half. Excellent...I'de hit you w/some K but I already did and it wont let me. You really can't blame Ike's inactivity on himself. He wanted to fight Tito & Sweet Pea but both fights were scrapped & those two ended up fighting each other. Those failed negotiations took months away from him so he ended up fighting Jose Luis Lopez because nobody wanted to fight him either. After that fight he was scheduled to fight DLH but DLH pulled out because of "injury" & the fight was postponed for months again. Your right sort of... At a time in the early 90's the top 5 or 6 p4p in the world included Pea (#1) Tito and Ike who dwelled all in the same division yet really never squared off... or I should say none of them squared off when they should have. Obviously Ike v. Tito never happended...too bad Pea and Tito didnt happen until many years later when the fight was s shell of the fight it would have been. Noy to say that prime for prime Pea va. Tito would have been a great fight, yes PR's it would have been a clinic. So 3 fighters all in the arguably top 5 in the p4p landscape really never fought each ohter...a bit disappointing to be dead honest. Fuck that, damn disappointing.

Ike was an animal, I remmember when he was going to fight Tito but ended fighting DLH instead. He gave DLH a hell of a fight, DLH won but it was close I thought it was a draw, he had a flaw that would kill me..he was just wait and wait and wait before throwing the right hand, he did it alot in the DLH fight and did it in the Vargas fight and Vargas jumped on him for that through the whole fight. Jose Luis Lopez was a beast and James Page man..those guys should of all banged it out, DLH, Tito, Ike, Lopez, and Page.

Lopez was a brute with an iron chin and tremendous punching power. If there was any Welterweight who was more of a tank than Quartey is was Lopez. I never kept track of what happened to him after the Quartey fight. I assumed he just faded into bolivion.:D A la Mike Tyson LOL! Yeah the kid was a monster at that time. After the Quartey fight he seemed like he wasn't interested in boxing anymore. I heard reports of him being out of shape for fights & fighting at Super Middle or Light Heavy even.

Lopez was also avoided like the plague during that time & NOBODY wanted to fight him. Ike was interviewed after that fight & was asked why he took that fight & he said that because nobody wanted to fight Lopez or himself. One of my very favorite fighters of all time. Ike was an animal in the mid 90's. One of the most physically strong Welters ever...one of the best jab's that boxing has ever seen too. Very few guys can actually say that their jab is as effective as a power punch. It was crazy how he outright demolished Espana and Vince Phillips. Good wins over Oba Carr and a rugged Verno Phillips in his second fight back froma 5 year layoff. I always thought that he won the fight with Oscar outright and he gave just about the best version of Nando a hell of a close fight after a year+ of inactivity. I thought he also beat Vernon Forrest rather decisively...7 rounds to 3. I think Ike Quartey should be regarded as a hall of fame caliber fighter with a 39-2-1 record...too bad that's not the case. Quartey fought De La Hoya after sitting out a year. I had Quartey winning the fight. He than sits out 14 months and fights Fernando Vargas. He gave Vargas a great fight but lost. I think Quartey was, is a very underrated fighter.
