WBC interim lightweight champion Joel Casamayor, whom many including Fightnews.com rank as the world's #1 135-pounder, announced today he is willing to move up in weight and challenge IBO 140-pound champion Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather. "I have waited patiently for all these so-called lightweight 'champions' to fight me," says Casamayor. "I challenged Juan Diaz at the Freitas fight, but he is hiding behind his promoter's skirt. I'm running out of patience waiting for this boy to grow into a man. Ricky Hatton says he wants big fights. I'll give up the weight and fight him. Floyd Mayweather says he wants big fights. I'll give up the weight and fight him – at any weight."
"I respect Hatton, I respect Mayweather," says Casamayor. "I believe they are men, that they will fight. These other boys, these phony champions, they hide behind their managers and promoters and duck me. Since when does a true world champion have to chase his challengers? These other lightweights who have belts, they should be ashamed to call themselves champions." Casamayor is currently mandated to fight the winner of the Aug. 4 Erik Morales-David Diaz match. Casamayor says he will fight either man, but added there is no guarantee that the winner will simply duck him, as others have since his October win over Corrales. "I will fight anyone," emphasized Casamayor. "I gave up five pounds and beat Corrales. I'll do the same with Hatton. I'll give up any weight for Mayweather – let him name it. I am not going to go away. I'm a real fighter – a real champion – and I know someone will accept this challenge."
Even though Casamayor has slowed down a lot and probably can't keep up with these guys anymore, I'd love to see a Hatton/Casamayor fight and/or a Casamayor/Mayweather fight.
I can't envision the Casa/Floyd fight coming off in any way, but it was a fight that really should have been made way back in 2000/2001 when Joel was the WBA champ and Floyd held the WBC championship. That would have been a hell of a tactical battle.
I found Casamayor's comments on Juan Diaz humorous too. You gotta love Joel, he's still on the grind.
Anyway, you are right about Diaz. Very, very green. I mean his last two fights where against Popo (good fighter, but the guy is a quitter), and Cotto's younger bro. Not exactly the type of experience you want going into a fight with an animal like Hatton.
I say he stops him...reason being is the last fight with Castillo. I have never seen Hatton like that. He looked like an animal. Diaz is a similiar fighter to Castillo...tighter D but not quite the body puncher and offensive skills. It would be a good fight for a few rounds, Diaz' skills would make it interesting ;)
And don't get me started with Casamayor. If he try's fighting dirty with Hatton...what do you think is going to happen? :owned: He is going to get mauled like no other.
Cotto was 4 fights ago. Ya the kid is busy. He worked Cotto too.
I think Diaz fights very different from Castillo. Diaz puts together combos and not a inside fighter like Jose is.
I've watched Hatton for a while I thought hes looked better before than he did against Castillo. Castillo is clearly past his prime. Reyes and Ngoudjo made that clear.
If Casamayors movement doesnt effect Hatton is Joel comes in like he did against Pearson, all slow and shit, its a bad night for Joel.
Hatton would work Juan Diaz similiar to how he did Castillo and he would outwork Casamayor and probably stop him. Two different class of fighters.
About Diaz...maybe. Diaz is strong, got a good chin, but has some greenish c h i n k's. They been bringing him up slow. Hatton may win on the cards but dont think he'll stop Juan. The issue of weight might throw a wrench into it as well.
I do think Ricky might stop Casamayor...I'de have to see how Joels movement effects Hatton though.
Casa is obviously being ducked at 135, and he got stipped for wanting to fight Freites in the remtach that we all know he would have won. He is getting shafted at 135, and its fucked up.
That's cool, I hear you. But I really don't think Casamayor is even close to being shot though. Ok, so he had an off night against Pearson, but Joel Casamayor is the real deal. I will say that ANYONE who takes Casamayor lightly....is in for a big surprise.
And besides who's really calling him out? At 135lbs, not too much for him to work with. So let him chase guys outside his division. That says alot about a fighter.
I dont think hes @ funeral home shot...but definitly showing the signs.
Hes 35 too...not exactly in his prime.
As for his competition theres always Diaz and Diaz...lol. Super-Feather and Light-Welts are loaded w/fighters. His reach and height are fine to go up and he'd have a advantage going lower. Its only a matter of 5/lbs either way. Like I said, he is getting old though.
I think Hatton & Casamayor is a bad idea for Hatton. He has to stay away from shot fighters. If Hatton wants to go down in the books he has to start KO'ing these young guys w/body shots.
Casamayor is shot. I've followed him since the 90's. He was real good then...but hes done now. If Corrales wasnt screwed from the weight he could have stopped Joel. Goosen wasnt helping and giving bad advice. He kept sayin to go for the chest w/the right cuz Casa was moving alot. When Chico did throw the right he missed the head.
The guy he fought beofre Chico, Lamont Pearson, Casamayor looked like ass against a virtual no name. I saw some interviews w/him and hes bitter cuz hes broke. Hes just looking for a super big payday. I do like Casamayor and feel bad about his life and finances...but hes still shot.

Highly interesting stuff. :beerchug: Great thread.
Saw Casamayor on the Cotto undercard at the Garden. He took on Kid Diamond, which at the time was 20-0. I seen him take some mean shots, and kept on banging like a trooper. Though that fight ended in a draw, Casamayor is the real deal. Who ever don't take him serious is in for a big surprise.
Casamayor -vs- Hatton
That would definately prove far more entertaining.
Cotto....too big, too strong.
Moving up to fight Hatton,
Big mistake....
Hatton is too strong for all the current light welterweights ..
Not worth putting the fight on.......H'd just grind him down and and give him a beating...
Sounds like he's looking for a desperate pay day to me.
Well who else is stepping up to fight the guy? Diaz had said that he'd like to fight Joel in November, but he hasn't said anything since.
Casamayor is the recognized Lightweight champion...yet nobody is coming to fight him. Julio Diaz sure as hell doesn't want to fight him anytime soon.
The guy just showed his balls with Corrales, fighting him even after the BS weight controversy.
I don't see Casamayor's name in ANYBODY elses mouth right now.
Pretty half hearted response from Diaz.
I think Casamayor deserves a big payday. WBA Jr. Lightweight champ, WBC Lightweight champ, Olympic gold medalist...the guy has fought a lot of good champions as well as upcoming prospects. He should get a shot at a big name opponent.
who is there for him to fight at 135. His only choice is to move to 140 and hopefully get a fight with hatton. Which i dont think is gonna happen and if it does casa would be neurtlize from hattons hook and hug tatic
Baby Bull....

This dude needs to sit down somewhere...Once he faces the Baby Bull I bet the farm he retires..A real boxer will press him..Once he is press he will be defeated...

casamayor is a joke, these guys dont move up a weight for a reason, because they dont think they can move up and be dominate! he's been at 135 for so long for a reason
he has been at 135 for MAYBE 3 years. that's not really all that long. he started out at 130. so what are you talking about?
casamayor stated that he'd move up for hatton or mayweather at any weight. he can't get a fight with juan diaz...diaz doesn't want it with casa. joel is the lightweight champ, so why would he move up to fight scraps at 140?

casamayor is the man. hatton/casamayor needs to be made and the winner could fight PBF. casamayor isn't the kind of draw that PBF is looking for though. but he's a damn good fighter

The one guy Mayweather skipped over that he probably should have fought. If you ever want to mention Mayweather as ducking someone, Casamayor is the ONLY possibility.
