Will Boxing Headgear Become History?
Will amateur boxers no longer wear headgear in the ring? The AP reported on Thursday that the International Boxing Association (AIBA) is giving thought to taking away headgear, once the symbol of amateur boxing, from boxers.
A reform committee of the AIBA recently proposed this and it is currently under review. At the same time, the AIBA is also deliberating on extending rounds from the current two minutes and four rounds to three minutes and three rounds to make amateur boxing more intense.
If the proposals are approved by the committee, changes will be applied as soon as August to some games, but not for this year’s World Boxing Championships and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The AIBA is also set to change the current electronic scoring system after the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Currently, scores are tallied up when three out of five judges simultaneously press score buttons. With the changes, each judge will mark separate scores and the final score will be added up after excluding the highest and lowest scores.
I think that it's good that they make amateur boxing closer to the pro' bouts.
After all, isn't that were all the good amateurs end up anyway?
If this is to happen, I think we'll se far better fighters in the pro ranks than we have now. You'll be able to train yourself for a pro bout from the beginning, and there won't be the change in style needed to enter the professional world.
Now the amateurs train themself up for bitch-fighting over many years, and when asked to change into a real tough fighter, most just can't do it.
I think we'll get another golden era for boxing if they change the rules...
ya guys i hope they dont take away the headgears. theres no reason to take it away besides make it look cooler for people that are watching which is not important at all knowing that your not getting paid so theres no reason to get cut up or messed up. and shit if they push the round time and shit it will be like a mini bro bout not to mention no headgear this will be a mini pro bout! shit if they approve that you guys might even see don king lurkin around ammy fights lmfao
I read about the possible scoring system changes on the ESPN boxing webpage. These changes will probably be in place before the 2008 Bejing olympics it looks like. At least the scoring system changes will be.
I don't see them taking away headgears, and I don't think they should.
Headgear only protect you from cuts. The force of the punch is only reduced by 1 or 2 % by the helmet.
I think those changes are great, but they should keep the helmet.
I agree.
I like the round changes but keep the headgear.
Back in the old days of amatuer boxing they didn't use headgear, but I bet it stays. I would like to see them do away with it, most importantly I would like to see the scoring system changed.

I would love for those changes. But they arent safe so they wont be approved
I didn't know about the headgear loss. You'll have more cuts for a start. It won't make much of a difference to head injuries, the way your head smacks around with headgear is crazy compared to without. The longer rounds will also make a big difference.
