what do u guys think.....i'm sure the answers will be all over the place....
IMO.....gatti is "Generally" underrated.....yeah i know he was destroyed by PBF & Oscar.....he lost to Manfreddy & Ivan Robinson.....but i have to be honest here, once again, In My opinion.....
as far as robinson & manfreddy.....that was an arturo that was boozing, partying, spending time w/ the ladies (can't blame him there), & just not taking care of himself outside the ring.....even then he was in all of those fights.....pulled the fight even after an early knock down against manfreddy & was starting to take it to manfreddy when the fight was stopped on a BAD gash above the eye....his condition & habits out of the ring cost him w/ robinson as well.....gatti did BEAT guys & went on to beat guys that were BETTER than manfreddy & robinson ever were.....basically i think arturo kind of blew his "Prime yrs" by his actions out of the ring.....
w/ PBF & Oscar, styles do make fights....but i HONESTLY believe that if gatti wasn't starved, drained & weak before the fight, he would have atleast had a better showing than the one sided ass kicking he got that night against PBF.....Phisically gatti lost the fight before it started....
Oscar was just too big if u ask me, & gatti's corner was training him more for a farewell fight.....
i am not saying gatti is the greatest ever or could be the greatest thing since they invented fire....but i think he is a very good fighter, could be among the tops of his era if he didn't blow away his mid career yrs....definately BETTER Than a C-level fighter like so many say....in the right fight & against the right style, he is a top fighter (especially if he is not having out of the ring problems)
ps-last thing....i still say all he needed was one good shot to beat PBF, lol....well we know he could take everything pbf had, the only thing pbf didn't hit him w/ was a bat)
that comes with being a fighter though. instead of making excuses for guys, you should bash them for not being disciplined. and, if you do choose to blame gatti's career failures on distractions, then make sure you praise guys like Mayweather and Hopkins for being in the gym every day of their lives and bringing their best regardless of what was going on in their lives outside the ring.
extremely good post, By the way a better than c level figher does not lose to c minus level fighters like Robinson and Manfredy, then lose to other ordinary fighters like Mickey Ward and make a sorry guy with no skills like Ward into a star just for being in a war with Gatti. Gatti sucks, hes definately not a top 15 or 20 even in his prime
Gatti was a good fighter in his prime but his only big win was against Ruelas. Everytime he stepped up in competition he was brutalized. He did have heart but so what other fighters have the same heart and find ways to win. Is he worthy of hall of fame status, I don't think so. However, if Barry Mcguian who was champion for 1 year got elected then there is hope for Arturo Gatti.
Most people seem to downgrade Gatti nowadays, but he really has accomplished a lot.
-Two weight class world champion. (130lbs and 140 lbs I believe)
-Been ranked in the top ten in 4 different weight classes
-Beaten some very good opponents in his career
He has done some notable things in his career, other than give us a ****load of outstanding fights...people might think that Gatti was crap at 147 too, but he beat Thomas Damgaard, who I remember being rated number 3 by ring magazine at one time, and was the #2 guy at one point behind Hatton.
Hes one of those almost, but simply not good enough fighters. He doesnt belong in the Hall of Fame...but he actually is just on the borderline. Kind of like Vargas...Vargas was one of the youngest champions, had a very good career, but when it gets down to it, he got beat by the better fighters, even if all 3 of them or easily Hall of Fame fighters (Trinidad, Mosley Oscar). Gatti is similiar.

Well put. I loathe PBF, but I could always point to his work ethic as one thing I liked about him (the best thing actually). He never came in flabby, or out of shape, or with lower stamina. He always came in at his physical best. When watching PBF, you might not get fireworks or entertainment, but he sure as hell won't pull a frietas and tucker out on you.

well, u r absolutely right on that......& i do bash arturo, as much as i enjoy him, for blowing away a good part of his career.....i think it bothers him inside too.....hopefully he finishes strong

He is a good fighter and made it farther than he should have, but to claim he is great or a hall of famer is like saying Larry Hughes is an NBA hall of famer for making it to the title game only to be swept.
yeah but do u think he hurt his great or hall of fame status by messing up outside the ring....i think alot of the fights he lost he could have easily won had he been more disciplined as they say.....anyways, my opinion

I think his offense is sometimes underrated. He had power in both hands, threw a deadly left to the body, and had a nice jab when he used it. His defense was his downfall though.
I think if he would have had McGirt in his corner much earlier then he would have beaten both Robinson and Manfredy. In those fights he would just walk straight in to deliver punishment. He had no footwork, he wouldnt punch and move he would just stand in and take punishment.
