I mean some guys you like that weren't really great, but you were a fan anyhow. My all time favorite non champ is Ray "Sucra" Olivera. I watched him twice this week on ESPN Classic against Tackie and Phillips after not thinking about him for a while.
I mean his management got him great exposure for just being a pretty good fighter. I started seeing him in the early nineties on ESPN, and I would bet he has close to the most boxing apperances ever on the network. He recieved two televised title shots on ESPN against 140 WBO Champ Zack Padilla (a fight that set compubox records at the time) and against 140 IBF Champ Jake Rodriquez only to lose both. But for a good ten years he was on ESPN a couple times a year if not more.
He had little power but was a true workhorse, but I was always pulling for him. He just made me like him.
Herbie Hide, a lot call him a bum without actually ever watching him, great fighter, hard hitter, underatted shit talker and the best stammer in the game today. The first round against Vitali is the blue-print on how to beating him (Klit), just keep your chin protected.
I can agree on Hide, he was wicked fast and could punch after first seeing him against Bentt I was a fan. He was just too small with not enough chin, but Bowe had him down what seemed like ten times and he kept getting up and giving it a go.

arturo gatti and tomasz adamek.
these guys have gone thru hellish fights with injuries and they still managed to win those fights. adamek went into the 1st briggs fight with a broken nose. everybody knows gatti broke his hand in the 3rd ward fight and still used it. these guys are exciting and tough as hell. true warriors.
these guys are totally unappreciated.
I agree with you about Tomasz Adamek. He didn't get much recognition among the best in his division before he fought Dawson, and now that Dawson beat him in rather one sided fashion, I guarantee that few think of this guy as a top fighter. Adamek is a tough, skilled, physical boxer who fights the right way. The Briggs fights were wars and Adamek showed his balls against a bullish fighter when he could have coasted in spots with his superior skills.
I totally disagree with you about Gatti however. An UNDER APPRECIATED fighter can't sell out venues, can't appear in video games, can't be recognized in several fights of the year...
Gatti is one of the more well known fighters in the sport and you'd better believe that people appreciate the wars he was in with Mickey Ward and Ivan Robinson. I think the under appreciated misconception applies to his legacy, when people start speaking about him like he was a great, hall of fame fighter. Gatti was a good fighter but was never amongst the best in his sport. I feel as if his excitement factor and courageousness skew his greatness in the eyes of his fans.

I have got to say that one of mine is "Fearless" Freddie Pendleton. First and foremost he gave my boy Pernell a spirited fight (which is what got me interested in him in the first place). The guy was the Emmanuel Augustus of his day (sans clowning) but he was just MUCH better than Augustus was all around....more dangerous puncher too.
His battle with Raf Ruelas was fun, the guy faced just about everyone and their mother throughout his career. Wins over Paez, Mayweather, Trice, Bramble, Spann (negating the clash of heads slip up in their first bout), Lopez...
He was a tough fighter for sure.
Great Pick Gringo just awesome for thinking of him. That he managed to win a title after such a terrible start was amazing, and he managed to defend the crown a couple of times. He had a pretty damn good Right hand if I remember he had Ruelas on his Ass in their fight. Freddie looked like a fighter with eyes loaded with scar tissue and the guy was definately fearless.
"For the longest time I was an advocate of Juan Manuel Marquez 10 years ago I thought he was the best most skilled Mexican fighter, yes better then Morales or Barerra!
I still like JMM but now that he has gotten a lot of credit and exposure I have backed off but for the longest time he was truly an elite fighter who was getting almost no credit"
i fell the same way about jmm
i guess castillo my favorite underappreciated i fell his whole career he hasnt gotten his due he was a stellar lightweight
coming into the oscar and mayweather people would say mayweather wouldnt be able to handle the pressure just look at the first castillo and oscar would win because he is no castillo
like castillo is some scub that shit would piss me off
castillo gave mayweather hell in the first fight win or lose whatever ur opnion of the fight and he beat and drew with stevie johnston and tko basan in a six round war (took cotto 11 rds to tko a little older basan)
and how he bounced back after getting outbox by mayweather
becoming a two time lightweight champ by taking on juan lazcano in a entertaining fight that castillo rallied to close the show (fight was soon forgotten about because of the gift oscar got against sturm)
and now it seems he is on the downside of his career

This has parks listed at 5'7 1/2 which is about what I remember. His two late round kayos are kinda impressive to me, but I think watching him is required to appreciate his power. The kayo percentage is misleading.
Lamar did have alot of power but I'll take Julian Jackson over anybody anyday in regards to stragith up power.
I think McClellan may have a slight edge as well but it is close.
From what I remember Lamar had a good chin and had a tendency to get hit too much. Maybe too in love with his power. He was only like 5'8 or so I think, His right hand imo was better than Geralds but GMan had him in the hook and bodyshot department. It would have been a shootout because I doubt Lamar would have been intimidated by GMan like alot of opponents were.
As far as Jackson yeah I didn't actually notice him on your list. Jackson is unequaled in power.
KidFire Parks had some hammers in his gloves and I seen him on Tuesday night fights regularly. He barely lost to Reggie Johnson I think, but the guy had more power the guy may have hit harder than all you mentioned. He was also from South Carolina where you seldom see world class fighters coming out of the South minus Pensacola.

BTW-When people talk about the middleweight/supermiddleweight era of the late early ninties, the Jones, Hopkins, Benn, Nunn, McClellan, EUBANK, Jackson, etc...
I always think back to a fighter named Lamar Parks who was young and upcoming when he came down with HIV...Lamar was an EXCELLENT fighter and at the time of his EARLY retirement he was every bit as good as a Bernard Hopkins was.
Lamar Parks-get a hold of some tape on this underappreciated fighter. He has long since been forgotten but I would bet you if you talk to his peers they would tell you he was an up and coming beast!
