Earnie Shavers? Please, Jerry Quarry knocked him out in the first round. And no "washed up" excuse, Shavers was 28.
Shavers also KO'd Ken Norton in the first round, KO'd Jimmy Young, Roy Williams and Jimmy Ellis, gave an old Muhammad Ali a very hard fight and almost knocked out Larry Holmes.
Jerry Quarry was a tough fighter with decent power although he was small for a heavyweight, Shavers was barely hit before that fight because most of his past fights had ended in the first few rounds.
Shavers started at a late age and was at his best in his 30's. 74 wins, 68 KO's. His power makes him a threat to anyone.
Wlad was 26 against Sanders, 28 against Brewster.
I'm not comparing the two skillwise, Shavers had obvious flaws, a suspect chin, bad conditioning and average skills but he has had his good days, he went 15 competitive rounds with Ali without tiring badly.
I can see Shavers beating Maskaev and Ibragimov. Hell, Maskaev himself was knocked out by McCall, Goofi Whitaker and Kirk Johnson.
Ali Was Better Then Robinson.. No Heavyweight Ever Will Have A Resume Like Ali...shavers, Foreman ,fraizer, Norton, Liston, Cleveland Williams. Ron Lyle... Any One Of Them Would Be Champion Today

floyd should be alot higher
alot higher. I wont dispute it that much because i dont have all the knowledge needed to make a list like that. but what i do know is that Floyd has accomplished enough now at this point to atleast be in the top 30.
This list is very irritating. Sweet pea should be way higher. RJJ should be way higher. Lewis should be on there. JCC should not be that high. Roberto Duran should not be at 6 etc...You're right, Durán should be at 5th. :D
i dont see whats wrong with Duran being in the top 10 he is the best lightweight ever fought everyone moved up fought everyone and so on i think duran is more than worthy of 6th place
Tyson higher? are you joking to be in the top 50 ATG you need to have beat atleast one elite fighter Mike was never up to the task of doing that
Lenox Lewis should be on there
and B-hop and DLH shouldnt even have been considered
marciano retired undefeated you got him down there

dude that list id garbage...tyson below bernard hopkins and eric morales? WTF smokin crack. Tyson was boxing for 6 years or so.
Why would Tyson be high? As dominant as he was what happened when he went against anyone who was even close to elite level. He got knocked out. And B-Hop should be even higher most title defenses at his weight.
No no one matched Robinson. I dont like him and Ali is one of my favirotes but no one touched Robinson. It was once said if god created the perfect boxer it would be exactly like Sugar ray Robinson. He could litterally do it all. No other fighter has done that. Plus he even went up as far as light heavy weight and would have done it too. Also look at his record. Crazy.
This list is very irritating. Sweet pea should be way higher. RJJ should be way higher. Lewis should be on there. JCC should not be that high. Roberto Duran should not be at 6 etc...
Why do people are ranking old fighters so high and new fighters so low...
It's sad because the new fighters never have any credits. Believe me if Roy Jones in his prime was fighting every two weeks an average fighter he would also have more than a hundred wins. Same things for Pbf, Toney, Hopkins, Wright, Pernell Whitaker, Morales, Pacaman...
I'm tired to hear people talk about the old fighters like if they were gods compared to today's fighter, also who here have really seen a guy like Stanley Ketchel on videos?
http://www.boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=009028 : look at the bunch of nobodies he fought, this guy was better than Jones ? Pbf ? Bhop?
Bullshit...
Who have seen Terry McGovern on videos, this guy is better than Pbf ??
Ali Was Better Then Robinson.. No Heavyweight Ever Will Have A Resume Like Ali...shavers, Foreman ,fraizer, Norton, Liston, Cleveland Williams. Ron Lyle... Any One Of Them Would Be Champion Today
Ali is hardly better then Robinson!!! P4p Robinson wouldve kicked Ali's Arse!!!

10. Sam LangfordI'm stoked (elated) by the placement of my homie among the top ten. While I don't agree with all the placements (Mike Tyson belongs in the top 10), I can hardly argue with the selection of the 50 greatest of all time. If you check my thread, you'll see I selected many of these fighters. Click below.

Very true Feint. That's why I call the list decent. It does spark up some debate. I just can't see Chavez ahead of Hagler, Whitaker, or Hearns. Sorry my Mexican freinds, I just don't see it.
Lists like this are so subjective they are almost meaningless. How do you really judge who was the best? Overall record, titles won, quality of opponents, exciting fights, skills, etc. All of these factors have to come into play so coming up with an objective list it is really an impossible task.
Having said that it is not a terrible list in my opinion, although I would definitely change the order it is in. But then again there is the problem, what makes me right and them wrong? It is all too subjective.
But I guess the goal of this for ESPN was to simply spur debate, which is what we are doing.
List was compiled by freelance contributor Kieran Mulvaney and did not represent either ESPN's stance or that of other contributors to the Worldwide Leader.
Wow that list fucking blows.
I bet Bert Sugar was a big part of compliling that list, he hates newer fighters and loves old school fighters who clearly were not as good.
Roy, Floyd and Pernell should be higher, Duran does NOT belong at 6, JCC at 24 is absolutly laughable.
Hagler at 35?
Hopkins at 47?
Tyson AND Holy ahead of Lennox?!?!
Man ESPN needs to get a clue.
So JCC is ahead of Whitaker, and Hagler? GTFO. I think its a decent list, but you have got to be SHITTING me. I wish I had the time to do my own top 50, but I don't. It's not TO bad, but I would make some changes in the order of the fighters.
