Jones....
Roy threw combinations, danced towards, and knocked people out.
Roger Joy Sinclair ( his birth name ) throws once punch a time, danced backwards, and puts viewers to sleep. :boxing:
I wouldn't say he was a bust against Hopkins. Jones was fairly green at the time as well (his first world title fight), and he still comfortably beat Hopkins, with a bad hand to boot. Hopkins may have improved after that fight, but so did Jones.
And could we not also say that Mayweather's performances in the first Castillo fight and the De La Hoya fight were also busts because he wasn't able to dominate.
I mean, you're not going to dominate every fighter and style put in front of you to the same level, especially when you start moving up in weight.
Floyds great. but at the end of the day.. prime for prime.. anything floyd can do Roy can do better..
and let the hating on robjr begin.....
heres the reminder just incase some yall musta forgotttttttt..
Roy, at any point in his career, wasn't as technically sound as Floyd is or was. That being said Roy's natural ability made up for anything he lacked technically.

He looked pretty good against James Toney who's pretty technical himself. He pitched a shutout with 2 knockdowns against Reggie Johnson who gave Tarver a tough SD fight years later. KO'ed Griffin in spectacular fashion. He broke Virgil Hills ribs & KO'ed him with a single body punch. He toyed with Julio Cesar Gonzalez in a lopsided decision (knocking him down a couple times) who won a piece of the Light Heavy crown by beating Darius M. That's what I can name off the top of my head. I think the glass jaw thing is debatable. I mean it's not like he didn't get hit from his opponents.
All of these fighters, Johnson, Griffin, Gonzalez, Hill, were good fighters. None of them were great. I mean Mayweather has names, Diego Corrales, Oscar De La Hoya, Jose Luis Castillo, good fighters that will stand Mayweather in good light.
umm...was he a bust against Hopkins and Toney?
Against Hopkins, yeah he was. There was nothing flashy or special about how Jones won against Hopkins, who was green and raw as hell compared to what he would become later in the decade. Hopkins' patient style made Jones look awkward at moments trying to land solidly. As for the Toney fight, Jones did great but Toney simply wasn't nearly as well-conditioned as he should've been.
I'm talking about Mayweather's technical skill which enabled him to look exceptional against exceptional competition. Roy Jones was great against guys like Clinton Woods and Richard Hall, stand up brawlers with a lot of target to hit. Against Tarver and Eric Harding, Jones was a bust.
Which styles have made Mayweather look ugly in a fight? None. Why? Because Mayweather was better able to adapt whereas Jones' style was about being the faster gun. Jones was the superior athlete, superior probably to any other fighter. But he lacked the ability to steal the show against a scientific fighter.
Also, Jones has glass in his mandible. Mayweather is pretty solid.

I'm not so sure about that Asian. I'd like to know the Ice Man's opinion on Jones Jr.'s talent compared to Mayweather's.

We can make another thread about heart, but at least as much as Floyd did. Roy would have never fought De La Hoya the way Floyd did.
An old DLH with one fight in three years.......Yawn. Roy's venture into heavyweight is MUCH more impressive.
Mayweather has the greater talent and more heart. Jones' appeal was that he turned ordinary good fighters into Harlem GlobeTrotter shows. Mayweather is a true blue prizefighter. If Robinson was alive today, he'd be more comfortable endorsing Mayweather than Jones as being superior.

It doesn't really count to Jones' disadvantage that he did things untextbook. Besides, there is no textbook on how to properly box. One guy may be a bruiser and win a fight 120-108. Another guy may be a counter-punching speedster and win 116-112. I take the guy who's more dominant all day.
The point is, Roy's 'bad habits' don't really count against him because they helped him. His awkward moves and speed allowed him to take advantage of an opponent. Now for someone like Andre Ward or Jermain Taylor, or an OLD Roy Jones, you may say these things count against them...holding your hand down.
But Roy in his prime was more impressive than Floyd will ever be.
NO PETE.YOU DROVE ME AROUND IN CIRCLES THAT'S WHAT YOU DID.THE ONLY ONE THAT DISAGREES FLOYD IS A TOP 5 TALENT IS YOU.THIS IS PRETTY MUCH THE CONSENSUS ON THIS FORUM.
You have to be joking.
You can't teach athleticism. You can teach someone a talent. It said BEST talent.. not NATURAL talent.
Well, I'd rather not go against myself, but there is a difference between talent and skill.
To Antonim, I am going against myself here, but still against what you said.
